We firmly believe that planning a Tanzania safari can be just as much fun as going on the trip itself. But we also know that organising a trip can be confusing and even a little bit frustrating – and that’s where we come in. Below, we’ve put together our top Tanzania travel tips, from the right airports to fly into, to the best time of year to travel – and a few nuggets of knowledge in between.
How long should I go for?
First on our list of Tanzania travel tips is this golden question and one that we get asked a lot. Our most common answer? It’s totally up to you. Seven to 10 nights for a multi-park or multi-country safari is a good starting point with two nights minimum in each camp (but we rather like three). Less than that and you’re in and out before you can say, ‘There’s a lion in that bush.’ But even if you’ve only got four nights then we can make it work – stay in one place with a variety of activities and maximise your wildlife viewing time. If you want to stay for seven nights in one place and make the most of the swimming pool and the down time, then that’s fine too. Play around with our trip designer and discover what works best for your time and budget.
Consider driving
Driving may seem like the most sensible option for moving around between safari parks, but actually, it’s not always possible due to the long distances and in some cases, wild terrain! The parks of Tanzania’s northern circuit, however, are ideally located to combine in a driving route – and that’s the second of our Tanzania top tips. Driving will undoubtedly save you a few pennies but it’s also a great way to see the ‘behind the scenes’ aspect of a country that you may miss if you choose to fly. Our Tanzania driving route combines Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro but you could also consider adding Lake Manyara or some time at the beach – blissful Ras Katuni is even within driving distance of Dar es Salaam (although you may need to hop on a plane to get to Dar first!).
When should I travel?
The weather in Tanzania is fairly easily divided into different seasons. The main dry season runs from July to September and you can expect warm days and clear, blue skies as well as excellent game viewing. No surprise, then, that it’s the most popular time to visit. There is however another shorter dry season that runs from the end of December (just in time for Christmas!) to February. The rain tends to fall from March to May, and then again briefly in October/November time. But our Tanzania travel tip would be to not let the rain put you off! There’s no northern hemisphere drizzle here, and thunderstorms tend to be short, sharp and spectacular. Game viewing in places like the Serengeti is phenomenal (think lots of babies being born and beautiful, emerald plains), and plenty of migratory birds in places like Ruaha and Tarangire.
The beach
We couldn’t give you a list of Tanzania travel tips without mentioning the coastline. With an exotic array of tropical islands and more postcard-perfect beaches than sunbathing time, Tanzania ticks all the boxes for a classic ‘bush-and-beach’ holiday. Most flights out to the islands leave from Dar es Salaam and the connections are so easy, adding a few days at the beach is almost compulsory. The three main islands are Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia (read more about the differences between them here). Zanzibar is the largest and easiest to get to, and it’s the perfect mix of old-world culture and beach luxe. Pemba is a remote, easy-going island that’s perfect to get away from it all, whilst Mafia is the place to be for snorkelling with whale sharks – and just generally fantastic marine-life viewing whether by boat or under the water.
Head off the beaten track
It’s true that some parks in Tanzania can get a little busy at times, so use it to your advantage and try something a little different? Rubondo Island, a tropical wildlife sanctuary in the middle of Lake Victoria is just the place for a Robinson Crusoe-esque adventure,whilst the glorious Mahale Mountains offer world-class chimp trekking. If your heart is set on the northern circuit, then how about traversing the Ngorongoro Highlands with a dedicated Maasai by your side? And if you really can’t leave out the Serengeti but aren’t so keen on the crowds, check out the Grumeti concession (our favourite lodges include Singita Faru Faru or the more classic Legendary Mobile Camp) in the west of the park. Here, tourists and lodges are few but wildlife is plentiful and you’ll still catch the Great Migration if you visit in April or May.

How to prepare your trip to Tanzania? This is your travelguide for Tanzania. Tanzania is an amazing country. You can hop between having the greatest safari of your life in the Serengeti national park and jumping into crystal clear water on Zanzibar. We absolutely enjoyed the trip and we will summarize all you need to know, if you are planning your trip to Tanzania. In this video we will answer how to apply for the visa in Tanzania. What you need to know about the yellow fever vacccination and malaria prophylaxis.
This was our travel route: 1 day Arusha 4 days safari (Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and Ngoronggoro) 1 day Arusha 10 days Zanzibar
How to prepare your visa for Tanzania: First, you can apply for an e-visa or get a visa on arrival. Either way, you pay round about 50 US Dollars for the visa. When you apply for your visa online, you need to do it early enough. We got our visa granted in 4 days. So you need to apply for the visa at least 10 days before leaving. Friends of us did not get the visa on time. You can apply for your e-visa (online visa) here:
In the case you don't want to apply for the e-visa, you can also apply for the visa on arrival. Here you find a list, which countries need a visa:
Yellow fever vaccination: You don't need a yellow fever vaccination for Tanzania, because it is not a high risk area. However, they will not ask you when you enter Tanzania mainland or Zanzibar from your home country. But it can happen that they control your vaccination certificate when you enter Zanzibar after visiting Tanzania mainland first. This does not make sense at all, but it is a formal vaccine and it could happen they ask you for your certificate. So better be prepared. Our tip is: visit Zanzibar first and then go to Tanzania - this way around you won't have any problems. The other way around, you maybe need to be prepared by getting vaccinated before you go on your trip.
Malaria Prophylaxis: Tanzania mainland is a high risk area for malaria. Especially when you go on a safari. The doctors told us to take malaria pills. We started to take them before leaving Germany and stopped taking them on Zanzibar.
Corona regulations for entering Tanzania: At the moment (march 2022) you still need a negative PCR-test to enter Tanzania. Of course, this can change again. Right now, you also need to fill out a health form 24 hours before leaving. You can find the doc here:

➤ Watch this video to see what to expect immediately after your arrival in Tanzania with World Wide Trekking. You’ve done all the planning, you’ve double-checked your pre-departure checklist, and now comes the exciting part!
Once you get off the plane, buy your visa, and clear customs, you’ll want to look for the big World Wide Trekking logo being held by your WWT representative that will take you to the lodge. Don’t take water in your mouth while showering either. Avoid tap water altogether. On the mountain, WWT uses a water filtration system (Katadyn Ceramic Micro Filter) which filters all sediments, particles, and microorganisms in the water. This system is really the best money can buy for large expedition-sized groups. Bring a 1-liter sized Nalgene water bottle for most of your water needs on Kilimanjaro.

Where we stayed: Siringit Villa - Arusha
Siringit Serengeti Camp - Serengeti National Park
After about 30 hours of travel we finally made it to Kilimanjaro International Airport where, after a quick covid test, we were greeted by our first guide outside of the airport. A short drive later we arrived at Siringit Villa, where we were shown around the house and debriefed about our plans for our flight the next morning. We sat on the porch and watched golden hour pass us by before taking a shower and having a delicious three course dinner. The next morning we sat on our balcony, watching the dik-diks and impala roam around the property before grabbing a quick breakfast and leaving for the airport. We made it just in time to board our first bush plane and take off. Landing in Serengeti National Park we were instantly greeted by the sight and sounds of Wildebeest and Zebras. Our next guide met us just inside the building and showed us to our game drive vehicle where we sat while he finished up our paperwork to allow us into the park. Before even driving 100m out of the airport we were already stopping to see the Wildebeest and Zebras while he gave us facts about the herd and migration. Arriving at camp we were welcomed in by the staff via song, dance, a tour around the property, and a three course lunch overlooking the same herd of wildebeest. The camp was amazing, the staff was extremely helpful and attentive, the food was delicious, the rooms felt like home, and everyone at the camp felt like friends. We took a short rest and made our way out to go on an evening game drive. Starting off strong by finding a lion sleeping in a tree, kind of hard to beat, but then we noticed some elephants off in the distance, they slowly made their way towards our car and stopped about 15m away from us (giving Jocelyn a bit of a scare) before walking off in a different direction. As golden hour approached our guide received a radio call which made him go off in a different direction. He took us to see an elusive leopard sleeping in a tree! We watched as it moved around a bit and gave us a few poses. On our way back to camp we stopped by a male lion and his whole family hangout out in the grass. Back at camp we dropped our stuff in the room and headed out to the fire pit to meet up with our new friends where we discussed all of the events of the day, had some dinner together, and then went to bed while being serenaded by the sounds of the wildebeest herd near camp.

During this day we woke up alittle later, had a relaxing coffee on our porch and ate some breakfast before heading off on our drive to Taasa. This drive was less of a safari and more of us trying to be out of the national park on time. But this does not mean we saw any less wildlife. Still stopping to see cheetahs, lions, a massive herd of buffalo, and even having our path blocked by a tower of giraffe which was about 14+ strong. Upon arriving at Taasa we had a very warm welcome, singing, dancing, introductions, drinks, snacks, and a tour. You instantly felt like family upon arrival. After lunch and a short rest in our tent we headed out on our first game drive in a fully open vehicle, nothing between you and the wildlife besides one foot tall doors. This experience is completely different than being in the national park, being able to off-road, go where you want, see less people, and even stay out past dark, it really is a spectacular place. Driving around as the sun sets on the Serengeti, watching golden hour overtake all the animals, seeing their change in behavior, waving to friends driving by off in the distance, and even having sundowners with our guides sitting in a random clearing before heading off into the night. During this night we were able to find a lion stalking a zebra. We followed him at a distance but as he went in for the kill a hyena scared away the zebra, so instead the lion turned on the hyena, we heard the hyena yelp as he begged for his life before luckily being able to slip away into the dark.
If this was the start to our time at Taasa we were excited to see what the rest of the week holds.

This blue seaweed economy is a rare triple-threat: a win for women, a win for the planet, and a win for sustainable economic development. And it could all be brought down by climate change if those in power don’t take the lead of the women who know this delicate industry best. Seaweed: Endlessly useful, seriously sustainable
Seaweed is a new superfood—and demand is rising. In addition to being used as an ingredient, it can be processed for use in countless food additives, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetic products.
“You might not know you’re consuming seaweed, but you are,” said Dr. Betsy Beymer-Farris, Director of the Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program at the University of Kentucky. “Check your chocolate milk and you’ll see something called carrageenan in it. It comes from seaweed that is farmed along the coast of Tanzania by women.”
Seaweed uses go far beyond chocolate milk. The first new Alzheimer’s drug in 17 years, recently approved for use in China, is seaweed-based. And it has the potential to sequester carbon—meaning it can be a weapon in our global fight against climate change.
Seaweed can absorb and store carbon that would otherwise be absorbed by the ocean, which has led to increased ocean acidification and subsequent disastrous effects on coral reefs. When that carbon is absorbed by growing seaweed, however, it can be safely stored as the plant rapidly grows—and the potential is limitless.
“If we decide to farm 10% of the ocean in seaweed, we can safely store up to 40 gigatons of carbon dioxide per year,” said Dr. Beymer-Farris at the 2020 Alltech ONE Conference. “That’s the equivalent of what the entire world emits on a yearly basis.”
As seaweed grows, it provides an important habitat for fish and other aquatic species. And the climate-friendly effects don’t stop after it’s harvested: cows fed a seaweed additive belched 58% less methane—a greenhouse gas many times more powerful than carbon dioxide.
With so many uses and benefits, it’s no wonder that seaweed farming is a rapidly-growing $6 billion business, projected to top $9 billion by 2024. And in Tanzania, the main drivers of that business are the female farmers who know seaweed, and the conditions it thrives in, better than anyone. The women’s work of farming seaweed
Some 70% of Tanzanian seaweed farmers are women, and they’ve been farming seaweed off the Tanzanian coast for decades. The area is one the top seaweed producers in the world, making the crop a powerful source of financial stability for women farmers and their families. While Tanzanian men head out to deeper waters to fish, Tanzanian women are expected to stay closer to home—making the intertidal zones of the seaweed farms their domain.
That’s how Tanzania’s women seaweed farmers started noticing that the sea level in their shallow-water seaweed farms was dropping, even as global sea levels were rising. The initial reaction of scientists was disbelief and shock.
“When I was doing research with these women in coastal Tanzania, they kept telling me the sea level was falling,” said Dr. Beymer-Farris. “And I responded by saying, ‘That’s impossible. There’s sea level rise happening as a result of climate change.’ So we took women’s ecological knowledge and we compared it to the academic literature by geomorphologists and geologists, looking at sea level rise. And what we found is that along the coast of Tanzania, the sea level actually is falling because of plate tectonic activity on the East African Rift Valley. There’s continental uplift happening, causing the sea level to fall.”
Those falling sea levels and subsequent rising temperatures mean that the farmers are no longer able to grow a specific species of seaweed, Kappaphycus alvarezii, more commonly commercially known as cottonii. Lacking access to boats to farm the species in deeper, cooler waters, Tanzania’s women farmers are missing out on a major income source, as cottonii is more valuable on the world market. Its loss is a major blow for these farmers. And to make it worse, since women lack representation in local village governments, no one is listening to them about it.
