Top 10 CITIES Switzerland: Most beautiful Swiss Places – The Highlights [Travel Guide]

Switzerland is full of beautiful cities! They are urban, vibrant and very happening. Although Switzerland is a small country, the diversity among the cities is very noticeable. The architecture, the art and the culture differ a lot from city to city. You will find the cities of Switzerland by the river, lake or even in the valleys. Each city has its unique appearance as well as its hotspots and attractions of where to go to.
Sion is the capital of the very touristy canton of Valais (Wallis). Interestingly, Sion is only little known but ranks easily among the most beautiful cities of Switzerland. Sion feels like being in Italy but is a French-speaking city. Sion is vibrant, full of street art and also a foodie hub. The most remarkable however are the two castles up on the hills. Lugano is the largest city of Ticino in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Lugano lays by the lake, surrounded by the Swiss Alps, and one can feel that Italy is quite near. Lugano charms with its many alleys, culture, lake promenade and its view points. The best view over the surrounding and the city of Lugano you can get at the Monte Brè or Monte San Salvatore. Basel is the hub for the pharmaceutical industry. Basel is an old city and full of culture. It’s important to explore the many alleys with their colorful houses, see the red city hall, the minster and cross the bridges. Basel has a strong connection to its traditions. Important to mention here are the Vogelgryff and the Morgestraich. Bern is the federal city (capital) of Switzerland and the only town that is considered UNESCO world heritage. Very typical for Bern are the many arcades and the fountains. Bern’s old city is really a highlight, thus make sure to spend here at least half a day. Neuchâtel is in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, a town that feels Mediterranean and sort of French/Italian. The highlight of Neuchâtel are the lake promenade, the graffiti alley and the collegiate church with the castle. Schaffhausen is probably the largest and best preserved old city in Switzerland. Schaffhausen’s old town charms with its colorful houses and oriel windows (balcony windows). Schaffhausen is easy to explore by walk it’s pretty much car-free. The best things to do in and around Schaffhausen are a visit to the Museum zu Allerheiligen, walking at the Vordergasse alley, going up to the Munot and seeing the nearby Rhinefalls. The Munot is a centre for culture and hosts various events. Zurich is the largest city in all of Switzerland. It’s the hub for innovation and business but at the same time is a very touristy destination. Zurich’s old city concentrates around the Limmat quay. Walk along the river Limmat, enter the many protestant churches or head up to the Lindenhof and Polyterrase to enjoy a great vista over the old city of Zurich. Zurich is modern but also very cultural; the major event being the Sechseläuten festival. Fribourg is a city on two levels. The old city of perfectly preserved and thus great to explore. Ascend the church tower of the St. Nicolas cathedral or the Loretta chapel to enjoy a brilliant vista. Fribourg city has also some similarities with Luxemburg. Solothurn is the most beautiful baroque city of Switzerland. The old town is full of beautiful houses and concentrates around the river Aare. The major landmark is the St. Urseren Cathedral that offers you a great view from its tower. Lucerne is no doubt the most beautiful of the Top 10 Swiss Cities. Lucerne has been a favorite for many tourists since it offers so many great things such as a charming river promenade along the Reuss, a great view over Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) and the Swiss Alps and otherwise seems very inviting with its alleys and painted houses. Lucerne’s best attractions are the Jesuitenkirche, Gletschergarten museum and many more. Explore Lucerne on the water by taking a boat ride or head up to Mount Pilatus to get a perfect vista over the Swiss Alps and this old city.

Top 15 VALAIS / Wallis SWITZERLAND – Best Attractions / Places / Things to do [Travel Guide]

The Canton of Valais / Wallis is one of Switzerland's most touristy and fascinating regions. It is well-known due to the world-famous Matterhorn, the villages of Zermatt and Saas Fee and the many other skiing resorts. However, the Canton of Valais / Wallis offers way more than these: There are plenty of other attractions such as dams, villages, mountain tops, panoramas, zip lines, lakes, funiculars, glaciers museums, thermal baths, hiking trails, bisses, castles and train lines. This video summarizes the Top 15 attractions in brief, including all the necessary information one needs when planning his/her trip to the Canton of Valais / Wallis.
A highlight is definitely Zermatt with the Gornergrat and the panorama up to the Matterhorn. Furthermore, Zermatt is a wonderful village to visit. The Aletsch Glacier is also a place one shall not miss when visiting the canton of Valais. It's the largest glacier of the Alps. Wonderful is going up to the Eggishorn for the sunrise tour in July/August. The Aletsch Glacier is going to glow in a beautiful golden color. The old town of Sion is very stunning: Italian vibes in the Canton of Valais. Very much alive and apparently a foodie lab! Thus, do not miss to take your dinner there: Hérens beef, valaisans tomatoes and apricots are local specialities. Also visit the 2 castles of Sion. The Pierre Gianadda Foundation is considered to be one of Switzerland's top museums. The museum hosts a brilliant collection of paintings (Cézanne, Picasso and Mathys), old cars and roman artifacts. A trip up to the Mont-Fort near the village of Verbier is another highlight of Valais / Wallis. The 360° panorama up there allows you to see the Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn... on your way down, better take the zip line: It's going to be very thrilling! At Martigny, you may also visit the Barryland museum. It's a foundation that takes care of the Barry dog breed; one of Switzerland's national animals. It's a very family friendly attraction. Saas-Fee is a beautiful village to visit, surely because of it's many glaciers. The Metro Alpin up to the Mittelallalin and the ice pavilion are a highlight. Take a break at the baths of Leukerbad. This is premium wellness up in the Swiss Alps! Consider bathing at the Hotels of the Thermal bath of Leukerbad village. Really nice is also the Grande Dixence dam, the largest dam of Switzerland. Very thrilling is the zipline just along the dam! The underground Lake at Saint-Léonard is considered being one of Switzerland's most unique natural treasures. It's a great attraction to visit during rainy weather. The dam at Emosson with the world's steepest funicular and the panoramic train is another hidden gem attraction of Valais. Visit it and enjoy a brilliant vista over Mont-Blanc! Relax at the Lake of Champex-Lac, one of the best lakes one could visit in Switzerland. Pure nature and few people. The Bisse de Clavau is a serene hiking trail in the middle of the vineyards above Sion. From there you may enjoy a great view over the Rhone valley and the Swiss Alps. The Stockalper palace of Brig is a place for people who love to visit medieval heritage places. It's a castle with beautiful arcardes. Not the glacier express but the steam railway train over the Furkapass are considered the most stunning trainline one can take in the canton of Valais / Wallis. Take a journey back to the past and experience what it means to travel with class! All in all, there are too many attractions in the canton of Valais: but in this video, you will see the Top 15 place / attractions that you can visit!

Top 10 Valais / Wallis SWITZERLAND – Best of / Highlights [Travel Guide]

The Canton of Valais is one of the most visited regions in all of Switzerland. Valais is the home to the iconic Matterhorn, many beautiful villages, great viewpoints and to a fascinating culture. There are many great attractions to be visited in this wonderful canton. This video summarizes the Top ten attractions in the canton of Valais / Wallis. The Goms bridge is one of the most photographed suspension bridges of Switzerland. It is completely free to visit and perfect to combine with a visit to the villages nearby. The Goms bridge should be definitely included if you are traveling over the Furka to Zermatt. Saas-Fee, the filming location of “Last Christmas” is one of the most visited Winter villages in all of Switzerland. The town is exciting to visit during Summer and Winter. Saas-Fee is not only great for skiing but also for families, as there is a lot to do in this village. The entire village is car-free, it’s nice to roam around the many traditional houses. You can try going up to the Mittelallalin to the world’s highest located revolving restaurant, visit the ice pavilion, the largest manmade glacier cave in the world or go for a ski down hill; this during Winter and even Summer! The Gorge du Durnand is a canyon / gorge with multiple waterfalls and a steep ascent. It’s one of the most thrilling and most beautiful gorges you could visit in Switzerland, and is even very budget traveler friendly. The Lac de Tanay is one of the secret lakes in the Canton of Valais. From Miex, you need to go for a steep hike and then you will arrive at this very humble, peaceful lake Lac de Tanay. It is nicely embedded into the Swiss Alps and thus makes a perfect sanctuary. The underground Lake (Lac Souterrain) of Saint-Léonard is one of the most important wonders of nature of the Canton of Valais. The lake is 300 meters long and is the largest underground lake of Europe. This is certainly a very highlight in the Canton of Valais, but you will have to prebook your visit. The Aletsch Glacier is the largest glacier in the Canton of Wallis, Switzerland and even of the Alps! You can get brilliant views from multiple points: The Moosfluh, Bettmerhorn and the Eggishorn. The best impression would be from the Eggishorn, as from there, you will get a perfect view over the bend of the king of the Alps and you can even see the Jungfraujoch. This is also a quite cheap place to visit for budget travelers. The hiking trail along the Bisse du Milieu and Bisse Vieux of Nendaz is a great and totally free attraction for anybody who loves to connect to nature. These hiking trails are so refreshing, which is why they are often called healing trails. In here, you can experience true beauty, perfect for budget traveling in Switzerland. The Mont-Fort at Verbier offers you a 360° panorama over the Swiss Alps as well as the Alps of France and Italy. You can see the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc, two important summits of the Alps. Try out the zipline, the highest located zipline in Europe; it’s going to be thrilling and pure adrenaline! Zermatt is always a favorite destination in the Canton of Wallis. You will get many great views over the Matterhorn from the Gornergrat, Rothorn, Kleinmatterhorn and the village itself. Zermatt’s village is touristy but also traditional and relaxing. Visit the ice cave at the Kleinmatterhorn or go for the 5 lakes hike. There is surely more than enough to do up there! Grimentz is no doubt the most beautiful village in the Canton of Valais and one of the best Swiss villages overall. Grimentz is traditional, full of wooden houses and just very stereotypically Swiss! Walk in the many beautiful alleys and immerse yourself into this wonderful alpine village!

My top 10 favourite places to visit in Valais/Wallis Switzerland (Matterhorn, Finhaut, Leukerbad)

This video will show you 10 different places of the region Valais/Wallis. I visited this region many times and there are so many places to explore.

There is not a particular ranking order for this video since all places are beautiful, expect for the first spot; I wanted to begin this video with the must see attraction, the 'Matterhorn' which is located in Zermatt. This is actually the first thing I wanted to see in this region.

Then, the video goes from the French-spoken Western part of the region, Finhaut / Lac d'Émosson, Martigny, Sion, Crans Montana to the German-spoken region in the Eastern part of the region including Leukerbad, Saas-Fee, Brig, Fiesch, Oberwald / Belvédère.

Which are your favourite spots in the region Valais/Wallis?

Great tourist attractions in Sion: Tourbillon Castle and the ancient basilica – Switzerland

The 13th-century Tourbillon Castle (or Château de Tourbillon) and 12th-century Valère basilica (also called Valère castle) are sights you must see when you are in Switzerland. They are located next to each other, on their own hill. The climb from the ‘road’ is 90 metres to the castle. The castle also contains a chapel with murals, but it was closed when I was there. And the 12th-century murals in the church’s nave are protected by glass to prevent further deterioration. So take photos through the glass or above your head. However, it was one of my favourite days in Switzerland! Oh, and the stop before Sion train station, is St-Léonard station. Get off if you want to see something special (watch my Switzerland nature video)!

Thanks for watching!

5 Best Places to Live in Switzerland Part 2 #shorts

Watch 5 Best Places to Live in Switzerland Part 1 here

1. Basel - Basel, located near the French and German borders, is widely regarded as one of Switzerland's best towns to live in. With a huge student population and a booming nightlife scene, the country's third-largest city is snug and dynamic. It's also a cultural hotspot with a lot to offer expats. However, some internationals who relocate to Basel choose to live outside national borders in order to save money. You could, for example, live in Germany, work in Switzerland, and shop in France. In general, whatever works best for you will be available in the Basel area.

2. Lucerne - Few cities in Switzerland come close to Lucerne, despite the country's abundance of stunning lakeside sites. If you're looking for charming mediaeval buildings, you've come to the right place. It may be found in Lucerne. Are there snow-capped mountains all around you? These can also be seen in Lucerne. Waters that are crystal clear and appear to be safe to drink? Lucerne, you guessed it, has it all. Basically, if you're searching for the quintessential Swiss experience, this is the place to go.

3. Sion & Valais - Why not settle on higher pastures if none of these cities in Switzerland are quite hilly for you? Sion, a French-speaking town, is the capital of the lovely Valais canton, which is located near the Italian border. It boasts all the contemporary amenities you'll need, too, and is surrounded by snowy peaks and overlooked by two hilltop castles. The railway station connects you to Zurich, Bern, and other destinations, but you'll be too busy wandering up in the Alps to use it.

4. Zurich - Without adding Zurich, no ranking of the top cities in Switzerland for expats would be complete. The country's economic powerhouse and largest metropolis also has the country's largest expat population. It won't take long for you to understand why so many foreigners prefer to live in this German-speaking metropolis. After all, it has fantastic pubs and restaurants, excellent transportation links to towns all across Europe, and an unavoidably picturesque Swiss lake. What else could you ask for?

5. Lausanne - Do you think we can't fit one more lakeside city on this list? Reconsider your position. Lausanne, which is located on the shores of Lake Geneva and speaks French, is another popular choice for foreigners. Because of its major universities and youthful population, the country's fourth-largest city has a surprisingly cosmopolitan vibe. It is also home to a lot of international firms, which contributes to the city's ever-increasing expat population.
