The first indigenous peoples of Costa Rica were hunters and gatherers, and when the Spanish conquerors arrived, Costa Rica was divided in two distinct cultural areas due to its geographical location in the Intermediate Area, between Mesoamerican and the Andean cultures, with influences of both cultures.

On another trip back to Cartago, I walk southward, seeing the campus of the Costa Rica Institute of Technology, and then walking to Dulce Nombre, a district of Cartago Canton that feels like a small town of its own!
This video shows the spacious campus of the Costa Rica Institute of Technology, including its wooded part, and then a walk down to Dulce Nombre, a more quiet residential area.

Birding Costa Rica - Cartago Province
We spent 5 days hiking around Cartago province looking for birds and beautiful sights. We flew into San Juan and rented a car to drive to our hotel near Cachi. From there, we birded the roads and trails around our hotel, and made day trips to the nearby national parks (online reservations generally required): Tapanti ($11 pp) and Irazu Volcano ($16 pp). We also visited La Marta wildlife refuge ($16 pp). All 4 locations were fantastic for hiking and birdwatching.
During this part of the trip we rarely left the rain for more than a few hours. Tapanti is within the rainiest part of the country and averages around 250 inches per year. Knowing this, we were prepared for rain, and continued our hikes rain or shine. The rain does wonders for bringing bird activity down from the canopy, however, and we were surprised to note that we seemed to find less birds during the clearest weather!
Notable bird calls we recorded in this video include: Tropical Pewee, Rufous-Tailed Hummingbird, Montezuma Oropendola, Black-Billed Nightingale-Thrush, Fiery-Throated Hummingbird, and Snowcap.
