Butler, PA

Butler is a city in the county seat of Butler County, Pennsylvania. Butler County was founded in 1800. One of Butler's claims to fame is that it is home to the original military Jeep that made American forces mobile during World War II. Butler downtown has a very upbeat artsy feel. With great Pubs and shops. The buildings are rich in history. I enjoyed my visit to downtown Butler, stopped by Vintage Coffeehouse and struck up a conversation with the owner, nice guy. And the coffee was great.

Slippery Rock intrigues thousands of visitors each year, and is one of the prettiest places in western Pennsylvania. The brick and rock sidewalks complement storefronts, while old-fashioned street lamps and a gazebo add nostalgic charm.

Home to Slippery Rock University (SRU), the town is popular among college students who seek a small-town campus atmosphere. During the school year, SRU offers noteworthy performing arts series, student performances, art galleries and sporting events to attend, providing many opportunities for cultural enrichment. The University purchased The Old Stone House Museum, a historic inn built in 1822 that was used as a stagecoach stop and tavern along the Pittsburgh-Erie Pike. Today, it’s managed by faculty and students from the SRU’s history department and used for special events, group tours and a variety of reenactments.

With its convenient location along the Slippery Rock Creek and proximity to Jennings Environmental Education Center and the North Country Trail, Slippery Rock is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, kayaking and geocaching are some popular activities, along with disc golf.

The Birdwatcher’s Store is a popular destination of wild bird enthusiasts of all ages. This unique attraction sits on 3.5 acres of a Audubon-certified wildlife sanctuary and offers a variety of educational classes that are open to the public.

Slippery Rock is also home to Butler County’s first brew pub, North Country Brewing Company. Critically acclaimed, this unusual pub serves sturdy fare straight from the farm and offers a large variety of handcrafted beers and sodas. Over the years, North Country Brewing Company has featured over 100 different types of beers, ranging from traditional reds and stouts, to more outlandish and experimental brews such as bacon-flavored brews and chai tea-infused ales.

When passing through Slippery Rock, you’ll have a chance to experience Butler County in a way unlike any other.
