Video of Sugar Hollow City Park, VA from Nancy L.

The stream at the picnic area (outside campground) is quite picturesque.
-----------------------------------------

Nancy L.'s Review on The Dyrt:

▶︎ Hidden Gem in the City
From the road you wouldn’t guess there’s a giant park beyond the entrance. The rangers at the entrance were super friendly, but they patrol a lot, so often no one is actually at the gate house. When we first arrived we wandered over to the picnic spots along a beautiful stream. A very large blue heron was in the water at let us take many photos. Later he strutted downstream right by our picnic spot.
After lunch I walked the entire campground and chose our spot. It was October and there were maybe 8-10 spots taken in the entire park. Many spots have a good amount of space between them. Pretty much all are shady. Some were on pretty uneven ground and quite a few had big drop offs on the sides or back. Overall, clean, quiet, park surrounded by lots of trees.

Treasure Hunting Arizona-Tumacacori Tombstone Calabasas Cerro Colorado Charleston Chloride Congress

Tumacacori National Monument is located 18 miles north of Nogales, U.S. 89.
San Jose de Tumacacori was a settlement founded by the Jesuits in 1691 primarily
to convert Pima Indians and remained active until 1848. Church ruins and about
20 vast stone buildings are still on site.

Old Oraibi Village can be found at the northeast corner of Arizona, State 264, 3
miles west of Oraibi, Hopi Indian Reservation where ruins of more than a hundred of old stone Indian houses built around 1150 can be found. There are also traces of Spanish mining settlements and archeological sites within the area.
Around Phoenix and outside the city, there are also remnants of the Indian and
Spanish buildings. A big hill in Pueblo Grande City Park covers the Hohokam
structure which dates back to the year 900.

Pipe Spring National Monument can be found 15 miles southwest of Fredonia
and 25 miles north of the Grand Canyon, U.S. 89. It’s where the Mormons settled
in 1858. A fort was also built here in 1870 by the Texas miners. It is also where
ruins of 19th century buildings can be found.

Tombstone is located 20 miles northwest of Bisbee, Cochise Co, U.S. 80. The rich
silver deposit brought big progress to the town since its origins in 1877,
the population grew to 15, 000 by the year 1880. Chaos and lawlessness became an everyday sight . It was 1887 when the mine was involuntarily closed down by flooding and the vibrant community was no more. Remains of its heyday are still present in this town of less than a thousand individuals which still inhabit the place.

Austerlitz is a ghost town situated around 7 miles to the south of the town Arivaca, in Santa Cruz County. Austerlitz was originally a mining town, and was deserted by the year 1900.

Bluebell is considered to be a near-ghost town, situated 10 miles northeast of Prescott and around 4 miles to the west of County 69. Bluebell was also a mining town, as evidenced by the nearby Bluebell Mine and its copper and silver refineries. Only a small number of people still take residence here.

Bradshaw City is another near-ghost town, nestled near Mt. Wasson, part of the Bradshaw Mountains to the south of Prescott in Yavapai County. Bradshaw was yet another mining settlement, operating the Crown King mine, whose ruins can be found nearby. 5,000 people once inhabited this city.

Calabasa is a ghost town that lies to the south of the town of Nogales in Santa Cruz County, around 6 miles down State Route 89. Calabasa was a Spanish settlement built in the late 18th century, for the purpose of exploiting silver resources in the vicinity. Throughout the years, Calabasa would change hands between Natives, Mexicans, and Confederate troops. Calabasa became a formidable fortress for the Confederacy during the Civil War, in conjunction with the nearby Fort Mason. Calabasa was abandoned in the year 1870.

Cerro Colorado is a ghost town that lies around 30 miles to the northwest of the town of Nogales, Papago Indian Reservation. Built within the Quinlan Mountains, Cerro Colorado was built because of the nearby Heintzelman Mine. By the year 1885, Cerro Colorado had grown to a city of over 10,000 souls. More than 800 dilapidated buildings can be found in this site of ruins.

Charleston is a ghost town built on the banks of the San Pedro River in Cochise County, around 8 miles to the southwest of the near-ghost town of Tombstone. Much of the original town still stands as ruins, most prominently that of the Tombstone Mining Company.

Chloride is a ghost town that can be found approximately 4 miles to the west of state 93, and around 20 miles to the northwest of the town of Kingman. Chloride was a mining town that serviced several mines, the ruins of which could still be found nearby.

Congress is a ghost town that lies close to where County 60 and State 89 meet, approximately 16 miles to the north of the town of Wickenburg, in Yavapai County. Congress was named for the Congress Mine, whose ruins can still be found nearby.

Contention City is a ghost town that lies around 5 miles north of Tombstone, and 2 miles north of County 82. Contention’s ruins are sparse compared to that of the other ghost towns on this list. Only a few mine buildings are still standing.

Dos Cabezas ruins was a town that was built on the slope of a mountain close to State 186 in Cochise County. Dos Cabezas lasted only a short time as a town, first founded in 1878 and abandoned in 1887. Today, its ruins can be found around 10 miles to the southeast of the town of Willcox.

Duquesne is a ghost town that lies around 19 miles to the east of Nogales in Santa Cruz County, just off County 83. Duquesne was a city of very little restraint in every category, if you catch my drift, home to over 1,000 people. Today, only the exteriors of the buildings remain standing, with much of the interiors destroyed.

Ehrenberg ruins were a town in Yuma County, sitting at the junction of the Colorado River and US 10. Ehrenberg served as a major river port

Shenandoah Valley Musts| Explore Caverns | Frontier Life | Best Sunrise Ever

The Shenandoah Valley Musts for anyone with a few days to spend have to explore caverns, learning about frontier life, and taking in the best sunrise ever. We do all that and more.

Luray, Virginia is a beautiful area in the Shenandoah Valley and we traveled there in early June to explore Caverns. We got more than we'd hoped for.

We used our new KOA membership and stayed at the Harrisonburg/Shenandoah KOA
( ) . This was our first KOA experience and it was a great choice for us. It was located centrally to many of the places we wanted to see and was set back away from any major roads so it was very quiet. The sites were shady, the staff was very nice, and the pool was large. Overall it was a great place to stay and we'd go back again.

The area has multiple caverns and we spent our time exploring two of them: Luray Caverns ( ) and Shenandoah ( ). Both offer guided tours that last a little over an hour and offer stunning formations.

Hearing that the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park
( ) has some of the best sunrises in the country we of course had to check that out. We spent a VERY early morning catching one at the Buck Hollow Overlook. It was early and cold but the beautiful sunrise made it all worth while.

A short visit to Cooter's Place ( ) in Luray really brought out our inner children as we toured the museum dedicated to the Duke's of Hazzard. It was awesome to see all the iconic cars and share something from our childhood with our son. Travel with kids can sometimes be challenging but he loved this place!

Another short stop was at Route 11 Potato Chips
( ) which unfortunately wasn't cooking that day...so no tour. We did get free samples of some delicious chips though!!

Our final day in the area was spent at the Frontier Culture Museum
( ) in Staunton. The large outdoor museum was amazing and we spent nearly 4 hours learning how the people who immigrated to American lived in their home countries.

Many of the buildings in the museum are actual structures from the regions they represent. They were shipped to the museum and reconstructed on site. The reenactors made learning enjoyable and showed how the people, dressed, worked, and played in their respective periods. This was a great way to end our time in Virginia.

Kentucky's Best-Kept Secret - Land Between the Lakes

🦎 Land Between the Lakes National Park is a beautiful and serene park located in western Kentucky and Tennessee. It is nestled between two large lakes, Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, and spans over 170,000 acres of lush forests, grasslands, and wetlands.
In August 2020, we visited this sprawling park for a photography vlog and adventure.
** Note that this video was made when it was legal to film in a National Park without need of a permit. The laws have changed since then.**
One of the most interesting things about Land Between the Lakes National Park is its rich history. The park was once home to several small communities, which were eventually evacuated in the 1960s to create the park. There still are several historical sites within the park, including a recreated 1850s homestead and the remains of an old iron furnace.
Land Between the Lakes National Park is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and history buffs. It offers something for everyone, from scenic vistas and wildlife sightings to hiking trails and historical sites. The park's serene beauty and rich history make it a unique and unforgettable destination that visitors will cherish for years to come.
