In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Cagliari, Alghero, Emerald Coast (Costa Smeralda), Pelosa beach, the village of Bosa, Villasimius, Costa Rei, Limbara mountain, Gallura, Tavolara island, Capo Ferrato, Stintino village.
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a tour to better visit the island, with a clear map of Sardinia and tips to organize your trip and your vacation.
• Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Sardinia, with its rich traditions and wonderful nature!
So, what are the most relevant points of interest in this fascinating island? Here are my answers:
COSTA REI
Located on the southeast coast of Sardinia, Costa Rei is a small village. This place is much appreciated by international travelers as a destination for holidays in Sardinia.
Across miles of stunning white sand beaches, here you can find high-quality tourism services: some of the best family hotels, luxury villas, resorts, restaurants, and much more.
GALLURA
Among the favorite tourist destinations in the Mediterranean, Gallura lies on a beautiful stretch of land almost lapping Corsica, overlooking the Strait of Bonifacio.
The extreme north of the island is the natural pearl of the promontory of Capo Testa, with its beaches surrounded by the greenery of strawberry trees and a rich Mediterranean vegetation.
COSTA SMERALDA
In particular, the Costa Smeralda is a coastal stretch that is part of Gallura and which extends for about 55 kilometers.
Moving south there is the imposing island of Tavolara, in front of which there are other beautiful beaches such as Lu Impostu and Brandinchi.
ALGHERO
Alghero is a city loved for its walkway along the port’s bastions, the red roofs that touch the sky and the historical center: a labyrinth of narrow streets that connect piazzas bustling with life.
VILLASIMIUS
Villasimius is popular for its renowned resorts, hotels and long white sand beaches with crystal clear waters, diving sites, coves, and a landscape covered in the Mediterranean scrub.
LIMBARA
Visit Monte Limbara, a rocky granitic massif not very high (1,359 meters), recommended to those who want to hike and enjoy nature without a deep trekking experience.
CAGLIARI
Most tourists begin their visit in the island capital of Cagliari, stopping at least to climb from Piazza della Costituzione to Bastione San Remy.
Cagliari can be an excellent base for visiting the southern coast of the island, which has some of the best beaches in Sardinia.
STINTINO (LA PELOSA BEACH)
The main tourist attraction of Stintino is the beach of La Pelosa, made of fine white sand and a turquoise-blue sea. An icon here is the tower, built in 1578 by the Aragonese, called Torre della Pelosa.
BOSA
In the village of Bosa, a tangle of medieval streets winds from the old stone bridge to the hilltop Malaspina Castle.
CAPO FERRATO
The wild promontory of Capo Ferrato is ideal for taking beautiful walks and breathing in nature.

Places to see in ( Sassari - Italy ) Piazza d'Italia
Places to see in ( Sassari - Italy ) Piazza d'Italia
Piazza d'Italia is the most important square in the city of Sassari. It stands on the edge of the medieval old town, just outside the city walls, along the old road axis, already existing in Roman times ( II century ), which connected Turris Lybissonis ( Porto Torres ) to Karalis ( Cagliari ) and currently called via Rome.
Piazza d'Italia responds to the plan laid down in the master plan of the engineer Enrico Marchesi of May 31, 1837 (although originally octagonal ) and is the first concrete realization of one of the new parts ( Appendices ) of the city that will take shape from Nineteenth century .
The square, considered the city living room, was built starting in 1872 . On the square there is the spectacular prospect of the Palazzo della Provincia , the seat of the province of Sassari , built in the late nineteenth century in the neoclassical style . Also noteworthy is the Palazzo Giordano, in neo-Gothic style . At the center of the square is the monument to Vittorio Emanuele II , a work by the Piedmontese Giuseppe Sartorio , inaugurated in 1900 , which marks the conclusion of the square.
From Piazza d'Italia, some of the city's major arteries move:
the Bargone Crispo arcades, which join the square to Piazza Castello , towards the historic center;
via Carlo Alberto, which leads onto the hemicycle Garibaldi and Viale Italia;
via Roma, which continues in via Carlo Felice.

Alghero by bike:
Alghero is best known for its beautiful beaches, very good food at reasonable prices, and also for its Catalan origin; in fact, it was known in the past as la Barceloneta sarda, little Sardinian Barcelona. This historic town is one of the most popular destinations for Sardinia's visitors.
At its atmospheric narrow lanes you'll find numerous bars and cafés. Its restaurants are renowned for excellent seafood. The surrounding area brings many delights for those who venture out of the city. These include the famous beaches at La Pelosa - Stintino, the eerily abandoned mining town of Argentiera and the ancient palace complex at Nuraghe di Palmavera.
Alghero historical center
Let’s start this guide of Alghero with the old town, the most interesting area to visit.
When you will arrive, you will directly notice how charming the historical center is, with its narrow paved streets and historical monuments everywhere.
You will also find many coffee shops, restaurants and tourist shop in this touristic city.
As Alghero is the capital of the “Coral Coast”, most of the shops are selling red coral jewelry, the local specialty. It really and makes a perfect souvenir to bring back from your holidays in Sardinia!
Here are the best places to visit in Alghero, Sardinia:
The fortifications and ramparts of Alghero: Recently renovated, the promenade along the ramparts is great and offers many nice viewpoints over the coast.
During your stroll, you will also see beautiful gates, towers and bastions, named (for most of them) after famous explorers like Marco Polo or Ferdinand Magellan.
The site has been really well rearranged. It’s also the perfect spot to enjoy the sunset in Alghero.
In the old town, there is also:
Alghero Cathedral
The Cathedral’s bell tower: you can go up and enjoy the view over Alghero
La Piazza Civica: the main square with many terrace coffee shops
The Coral Museum, to learn more about this local craft
The Church of St. Michael and its colorful dome
The Church of St. Barbara, the most ancient church of the city
The lungomare, for a walk along the sea.
When you will be in Sardinia, you will for sure find stunning beaches everywhere you go, including around Alghero.
You will be able to practice the most popular Sardinian activity: sunbathing! 😋
Here is a list of the most beautiful beaches of Alghero and its surroundings:
Lido San Giovanni is the closest beach to the old city and you can go there on foot. There, you can rent sun beds and umbrellas. It’s also a very kid friendly beach, with shallow water.
Maria Pia beach: large white sand beach with a pine forest nearby. There are many parking spots around.
Bombarde beach: located North of Alghero, towards Porto Conte. Well equipped with sun beds and paddle boats for rents + restaurants around.
Lazzaretto beach: located right next to Bombarde beach. It’s a sandy beach with crystal clear water.
Spiaggia Mugoni: the very large sandy beach that I mentioned above (20min away from Alghero)
Spiaggia di Porticiello: its belvedere offers a splendid view over Porto Conte Regional Natural Park
Spiaggia Porto Ferro: I also talked about this one above. It’s located 30min away from Alghero and it’s the wildest beach in the area.
La Pelosa beach
What are the best things to do in Alghero and its surroundings after you’ve seen everything I talked about?
Well, then you should go explore a bit further away and discover one of the best beaches of Northwest Sardinia (some will even say of all Europe!): La Pelosa beach.
This very popular beach is a real tourist magnet, so don’t expect to be alone!
It’s located about 1 hour driving from Alghero, in the Gulf of Asinara, a few kilometers away from Stintino.
With its white sand and shallow turquoise water, La Pelosa really feels like paradise. You will often see it on postcards, especially the part with the watchtower and Asinara islands in the background.
Places to see in ( Sassari - Italy )
Places to see in ( Sassari - Italy )
Sassari, Sardinia's second-largest city, is a proud and cultured university town with a handsome historic centre and an unpretentious, workaday vibe. Like many Italian towns it hides its charms behind an outer shell of drab apartment blocks and confusing, traffic-choked roads. But once through to the inner sanctum it opens up, revealing a grand centre of wide boulevards, impressive piazzas and stately palazzi. In the evocative and slightly rundown centro storico (historic centre), medieval alleyways hum with Dickensian activity as residents run about their daily business amid grimy facades and hidden churches.
One of the most important monuments in Sassari is the Fontana del Rosello , built in the Late Renaissance style and characterized by statues: one for each season, and one equestrian, of San Gavino. Also worth seeing are the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, erected in the 13th Century; originally Romanesque, it was later rebuilt as Gothic, but with Baroque facade. Then, visit the Palazzo Ducale, a monumental 18th-Century limestone construction; the Tower of St. Anthony, a remain of the original, 13th-Century city walls; and the Church of San Pietro in Silki, also built in the 13th Century. We also recommend the G. A. Sanna Archaeological-Ethnographic Museum, housing archaeological finds from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages.
Moving towards the sea from Sassari, we reach Porto Torres, on the Gulf of Asinara. In addition to Porto Torres's charming historic center, we can admire the Basilica di San Gavino, one of the oldest and most important examples of Pisan Romanesque architecture on the island; the Basilica di San Gavino a Mare, built in the mid-19th Century near the ancient necropolis Turris Libisonis (the remains of which are kept in the Antiquarium Turritanum); the Palazzo di Re Barbaro; the Terme Maetzke and Terme Pallottino, boasting still their mosaic floors that date back to the Roman Empire; and the Roman bridge, built for commuting from city to countryside.
To northwest of Porto Torres, almost on the end of the small peninsula that reaches the island of Asinara, there is the picturesque village of Stintino, a former fishing village and now popular seaside resort with golden beaches and crystalline sea. Continuing to north we reach the National Park of Asinara, that takes its name from the island (in the center) and is a protected marine area.
Descending along the coast towards the south, we reach the Promontory of Capo Caccia and the enchanting Bay of Porto Conte. In the western part of Capo Caccia, overlooking the sea, the Escalada del Cabirol is 665 steps carved into the rock wall and leading to the Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune's Grotto), among the most suggestive of the Mediterranean. (We can also arrive here by ferry from Alghero.)
On the opposite side of Neptune's Grotto is the entrance to the Grotta Verde (Green Grotto), hiding away traces of the Neolithic Period. Grotta dei Ricami is also close, but accessible only from the sea. The Bay of Porto Conte is part of the Marine Reserve of Capo Caccia-Isola Piana. Nuraghe Palmaneva and the Necropolis of Abghelu Ruju, also in the area, are also tour-worthy.
By continuing along the coast, we reach the beautiful, monument-filled town of Alghero. First, the ancient towers that once surrounded the entire village today they have dwindled down to seven (including Torre de Sant Joan, Torre de l’Esperò Reial, Torre de Sant Jaume, Torre de la Polvorera). Other monuments include the bastions, the ancient fortification of the city; the Plàia Civica, which is the Medieval square of the city; the Cathedral of Santa Maria, built in 1500 in Gothic-Catalan style; and the Plàia del Bisbe, a Neoclassical piazza fronted by the Teatro Civico, the Palazzo Vescovile and the Casa Doria.
