Oktoberfest Heroes: Andrea

This is Andrea, a Hofbräu-Festzelt waitress who is approx. 150cm tall. She is our hero.

🍺 Note the foam in the beer.. it's supposed to be at that level. By the time it gets to the table it will settle and the glasses will contain exactly 1 Litre of delicious Munich beer. Prost! 🍺

Check out more Oktoberfest heroes here:

To become an Oktoberfest server one needs to be something a little more than human. They need to survive 16 days of the most grueling and underappreciated work. It’s a year’s worth of training—physical, mental, emotional—for 16 days straight working 12-hour days. On their feet, in a tent, under all kinds of pressure.

So let's say an almighty PROST to these heroes who keep the 6.5 million visitors hydrated in the beer tents!

Beautiful Scenery in Fulda Germany 4K

Fulda, a city located in the Hesse state of central Germany, boasts a rich historical heritage that dates back over a millennium. Here are 10 interesting historical facts about Fulda:

Foundation of Fulda Abbey (744 AD): Fulda was founded in 744 AD by Saint Boniface, a missionary who was instrumental in the Christianization of the Germanic peoples. He established the Fulda Abbey, which became one of the most important monastic centers in medieval Europe. The abbey was placed under the rule of Abbot Sturmi, a disciple of Boniface, and grew rapidly in influence and wealth.

Center of Learning and Scholarship: During the Carolingian Renaissance, Fulda Abbey became a major center of learning, particularly under the guidance of Abbot Rabanus Maurus (822–842). The abbey's scriptorium produced a wealth of manuscripts, including the famous Codex Fuldanus, which helped preserve classical and Christian texts.

The Tomb of Saint Boniface: Saint Boniface, often called the Apostle of the Germans, was martyred in 754 AD and buried in Fulda. His tomb in the Fulda Cathedral became an important pilgrimage site throughout the Middle Ages and remains a significant religious site to this day.

Fulda as a Prince-Abbacy: In 1220, Fulda Abbey was elevated to the status of a prince-abbacy, granting its abbot princely status within the Holy Roman Empire. This made Fulda both a religious and secular power, with the abbot ruling over extensive territories and having a voice in imperial matters.

The Fulda Cathedral: The Fulda Cathedral, constructed between 1704 and 1712, is a stunning example of Baroque architecture. It was built on the site of earlier churches, with its design influenced by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The cathedral houses the relics of Saint Boniface and serves as the primary church of the Diocese of Fulda.

Fulda and the Thirty Years' War: Like many parts of Germany, Fulda suffered during the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648). The city was occupied by various armies, leading to destruction and hardship for its inhabitants. The war's end brought significant social and economic changes to Fulda, as it did to the rest of Europe.

Secularization and the End of the Prince-Abbacy: The secularization movement of the early 19th century, following the Napoleonic Wars, led to the dissolution of the Fulda Abbey's monastic and secular powers. In 1802, Fulda was secularized and incorporated into the newly created Principality of Nassau-Orange-Fulda, marking the end of its religious and political autonomy.

Fulda University (1734–1805): Fulda briefly had a university, founded in 1734 by Prince-Abbot Adolf von Dalberg. The University of Fulda offered courses in theology, philosophy, law, and medicine. However, it was closed in 1805 during the secularization process.

Economic Growth and Industrialization: In the 19th century, Fulda experienced significant economic growth and industrialization, partly due to its strategic location along key trade routes. The city became known for its textile industry, particularly the production of high-quality fulled woolen cloths, and for other manufacturing industries.

Fulda during World War II: During World War II, Fulda was strategically important due to its location on key railway lines. Although the city was bombed by Allied forces, it did not suffer as much destruction as other German cities. After the war, Fulda became part of the American occupation zone and played a role in the Cold War due to its proximity to the border with East Germany.

These historical facts about Fulda highlight its importance as a religious, cultural, and economic center throughout the centuries. The city’s rich heritage is still evident today in its architecture, cultural institutions, and the ongoing significance of the Fulda Cathedral.

Mammutbaum Schotten Vogelsbergkreis - Sequoia tree near Schotten, Germany

Mammutbaum bei Schotten Vogelsbergkreis – Sequoiadendron giganteum Sequoia tree near Schotten Vogelsbergkreis – Germany
Camera, Soundtrack and edited by B.J. Antony – 2:46 Min.

Location: southwest of the town of Schotten in Vogelsbergkreis in Hesse, about one kilometer southeast of the Niddastausee lake, the trail is signposted from there. Natural monument. Sown in 1895, planted in the spring of 1900 by the forester Schott on the occasion of the birth of his son. The information board by the sequoia tree apparently dates back to the 1960s. At the time of the recording, counting from the year of sowing, the giant counts 120 years on its furrowed bark.Fossil finds of 15 million year old trunks are known. The oldest redwoods still living today in their region of origin are said to be over 3000 years old. Ancestors can be traced back to the Cretaceous period 125 million years ago and were widespread over much of the northern hemisphere. They were originally native to Central Europe during the warm periods, but did not survive the ice ages. Plant collectors and botanists brought the seeds back to Europe only towards the end of the 19th century, which was initially driven by the fact that it was considered chic for the rich to put a redwood tree in their park or garden. The dimensions of the redwood trees are staggeringly gigantic in the plant kingdom. The giant trees that still stretch into the sky today grew even before Jesus was hailed in his straw manger or Rome became a world empire. Over 3000 years old they reach a trunk diameter of more than 10 meters, a height of over 100 meters and a sequoia of mighty caliber weighs then already times about 2400 tons. For comparison: that is the equivalent of about 353 Tyrannosaurus Rex, 18 blue whales or 6 fully fuelled Airbus A380s.Who is further interested: everywhere on the Internet you can find countless stories about the sequoia. Or simply visit yourself.
