Exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina | Grandfather Mountain
Come join us as we explore the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina... hiking Grandfather Mountain and Rough Ridge Overlook Trail along the Blue Ridge Parkway, and visiting the quaint mountain towns of Boone and West Jefferson.
We camped with our RV at Green Mountain RV Park in Lenoir, NC, using our Thousand Trails membership. From there we took day trips to the local attractions.
While at Grandfather Mountain, we walked across the mile-high bridge and climbed the boulders on the other side for a magnificent view. We also began walking the Grandfather Trail, which leads to McRae peak... but decided against this hike since we had our 16 year old dog Riley with us.
Next, we hiked Rough Ridge Overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway, which leads to sweeping views of Grandfather Mountain and the Linn Cove Viaduct, one of the most photographed sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway.
We visited the Mountain College town of Boone, NC, home of Appalachian State University (ASU), where we shopped for souvenirs at Mast General Store.
We then traveled to the quaint Hallmark town of West Jefferson, NC, where we checked out Ashe County Cheese Factory, home of all kinds of locally made cheeses... we then ate a delicious lunch at Black Jack's Pub & Grille. We topped off the day at Martha Mae's Emporium before ascending up to Mount Jefferson State Natural Area for a panoramic view of the town!
Stay tuned for Part 2 of our Blue Ridge Adventures where we visit Beech Mountain, Blowing Rock, Moses Cone Memorial Park and do a spectacular waterfall hike at Stone Mountains State Park.

Wheeler Lake Trail The Magnolia Mill and Waterfall
Located outside of America’s highest incorporated municipality, Alma, you’ll find a lake that’s full of hidden secrets. Founded in 1861 beneath the shadows of 14,295-foot Mount Lincoln, the town of Montgomery was built to house an influx of miners in search of gold and ore. During the mining boom of Colorado in the 1800s, more than 1,000 residents, complete with 150 cabins, hotels, sawmills, and a dance hall littered the area. The City of Colorado Springs purchased the site near the turn of the century and decided the space was better off as a reservoir for snow melt. A decision was made to flood the structures in the 1890s except for one mill. As a result, the only building of Montgomery that still stands is the Magnolia Mill, but even this building isn’t the original structure. The first mill burnt down and was rebuilt in 1930. It’s since fallen into decay and is closed to the public. While you can’t enter the Magnolia Mill, it’s still a very impressive building, complete with a large conveyor belt system, that you will still drive or hike under.
While most of this ghost town might be hidden, this area is still a great place to visit. Surrounded by massive peaks. The jeep trail can be quite challenging, and it would be advisable to consult one of the many off road trail guides for proper instruction. It’s even worth a visit in the winter, as this reservoir is known for its particularly blue ice following a freeze. One of the many great photographs can be taken just behind the mill of the small cascading waterfall. Play with your shutter speed on a remote trigger.

Blowing Rock, NC in the Snow 4K (DJI Mavic Air 2 Footage) Snow in the Crown of the Blue Ridge!!!
Blowing Rock, NC is a beautiful and popular vacation town in the Blue Ridge Mountains. The town, which falls in Watauga and Caldwell County is known as The Crown of the Blue Ridge. Was excited to catch The Crown of the Blu Ridge in it's Winter's setting!
The town of Blowing Rock got its name from an unusual rock formation that juts out 1,500 feet above the John River Gorge. So yes - there is an actual Blowing Rock. Because of the rock's shape and size, wind currents from the gorge often blow vertically which can cause light objects to float upwards into the Sky. This gets us to the famous legend of Blowing Rock. The legend goes like this. The area of Blowing Rock was once fought over by 2 Indian tribes - the Cherokee and Catawba Indians. According to the legend there was 2 lovers - one from each tribe - were walking near the rocks when the man received a notice to report to his village and go into battle. After the lady urged him to stay with her - he got so distraught that he threw himself off the rock into the gorge. After this the woman prayed to the Great Spirit to return her lover back to her. It is said that the Great Spirit sent a great gust of wind that blew the man back up the cliff in which he landed safely on the Blowing Rock itself. Pretty cool legend.
Today, this beautiful town of less than 1,400 people is popular stay or visit and offers so many attractions close by.
Here are some of the main attractions:
. Tweetsie Railroad
. Blue Ridge Parkway
. Grandfather Mountain
. Moses Cone Memorial Park
. Art in Park Festival
. Boone , NC
. Appalachian State University
. Valle Crucis
. Julian Price Memorial Park
. Broyhill Park
. Linville Falls
. Chetola Resort
. Tanger Outlets
. Green Park Inn
. And so much more.....
Hope you enjoy the view of Blowing Rock in it's Winter Setting especially from an Bird's Eye View!
