Places to Visit Near Sault Ste Marie

Here's an itinerary for an unforgettable visit to Sault Ste Marie, Ontario from @yourmatiekatie:
1) Stay at Bellevue Valley Lodge. It offers two fully equipped apartments, is surrounded by beauty and embraces the culture of the land.
2) Treat yourself at Elliott’s Ice Cream. They have house-made fresh ice cream and signature Crepes. Yummy!
3) Hike Robertson Cliffs. Just 30 minutes north of Sault Ste. Marie, the cliffs offer views from multiple lookouts across Bellevue Valley and as far as Lake Superior. In my opinion, this hike is one of Ontario’s best!
4) Swim at Harmony Beach. If you’re looking to cool down while exploring Lake Superior’s coast, this is the spot for you! You won’t be disappointed by the views here. You can also catch a sunset here.
5) Enjoy all day breakfast at Chippewa River Restaurant. The cozy atmosphere and delicious food will have you feeling right at home!
6) Explore the Agawa Rock Pictographs. This is one of the most visited Indigenous archaeological sites in Canada. Agawa Rock is a sacred site. Please respect and preserve the Pictographs. Do not touch the rock paintings.
7) Chase waterfalls along the Sand River Trail. You are allowed to explore the rocks by the waterfalls here, but do so with caution.
8) Trying The Voyageur’s Lodge’s world-famous Apple Fritters is a must if you have a sweet tooth!
9) Hike the Edmund Fitzgerald Lookout Trail and enjoy the view over Pancake Bay!
10) Grab a bite at Ernie’s Coffee Shop. Their selection of food is outstanding, and can whip up some amazing beverages!
11) Brighten up your visit by doing a walking tour of the Indigenous Art Murals. These murals are so beautiful, and many were painted by local Indigenous artists.

SAULT STE. MARIE Ontario Canada - Travel vlog SOO life 4K
Sault Ste. Marie is a city at the St. Marys River in Ontario, Canada, on the Canada - US border. It is the seat of the Algoma District and the third largest city in Northern Ontario after Sudbury and Thunder Bay. To the south, across the river, is the United States and the Michigan city of the same name.
We stayed at Sleep Inn (727 Bay St) - good price, clean, free breakfast and close to waterfront and downtown.

WEEKEND ADVENTURES in SAULT STE MARIE (The Soo) - Let's Discover ON (first time in Northern Ontario)

This video & trip to The Soo will always be special because it was our first trip to Northern Ontario. We decided to fly, rent a car and drive around to explore. Our first stop was for food at The Breakfast Pig followed by an unplanned & unexpected visit to Entomica, an insectarium. The Locks were a short walk away so had to see that in action and lastly because we had a rental car we drove even further north to see the Agawa Rock pictographs. We hope that this was the first of many trips to Northern Ontario for us. It's awesome and we hope you get to see it for yourselves someday. Comment Below to let us what you think.

A Quick Tour of the Oldest City in Michigan (Sault Ste Marie - Upper Peninsula) [ep 24]

Come with us and explore the oldest city in Michigan in less than 5 minutes! Watch 1000ft freighters pass you while chowing down an epic sized cheeseburgers, or explore the history of the Great Lakes and beyond, in episode 24 of Far From Ordinary.

Getting an up close and personal look at these insanely large freighters passing through the engineering marvel that is Soo Locks was definitely a memorable experience. The locks have, in one form or another, existed in this area since the late 1600's.

In fact, Sault Ste Marie was born in 1697, then later split down the middle when the US/Canada border was drawn. This makes it the 3rd oldest city in the U.S, and the oldest city in Michigan. How neat!

Clyde's Drive-in had some really freakin good cheeseburgers, and of course the Valley Camp museum was definitely something to be remembered.

Enjoy this episode!

Explore SAULT STE MARIE, MI

A visit to Sault Ste. Marie, MI. Home of the famous Soo Locks and one of the oldest cities in the United States. Our day included a kayaking adventure to Voyageur Island to explore, relax and witness a passing freighter up close. After heading to downtown and visiting the Soo Locks, we were able to see the freighter, Walter J. McCarthy Jr passing through the locks. Afterwards we raced back to Rotary Park to watch this massive shipping vessel pass by the park and continue on its way to Lake Huron. We had a fun time exploring the area and would highly recommend visiting here if you are in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan!

Michigan's First City: Sault Ste. Marie 5K.

Sault Ste. Marie is mostly known for being home to the Soo Locks, but there's a lot more that Michigan's first city offers to curious minds. The SS Valley Camp is an old Great Lakes freighter that is anchored here as it serves as a Museum Ship. The Tower of History serves as an observation tower over the Soo Locks, and there's plenty of touristy like shops and restaurants in Downtown Sault Ste. Marie to help serve the half million visitors that the town sees on average every year. On the flip side, the economic climate of Sault Ste. Marie is the same as the rest of the Upper Peninsula: Lifeless. Without tourism this area would be really struggling.

Plan Your Visit to Sault Ste Marie, Michigan

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is one of the most popular vacation destination in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula for some very good reasons. The Soo is a surprisingly diverse waterfront community and offers a wealth of things to see and do. With year round recreational activities, historical sites, the world-famous Soo Locks, Tahquamenon Falls, and spectacular lighthouses, forests and waters. And don’t forget there is some of the best fishing on the St. Mary’s River.

There is always something to do in “The Soo”.

Let's Visit Sault Ste. Marie, MI

Sault Ste. Marie, MI is one of the larger cities in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The city is most famous for the Soo Locks, a collection of 5 (as of 2015) locks within the St. Mary's River which helps ships traverse the 23-foot drop (or rise if going toward Whitefish Bay). I also manage to watch one ship go up in elevation as it heads out toward Whitefish Bay. Also, I walk around the rest of the downtown area.

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan RESTAURANT TOUR

Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is home to the famous Soo Locks and is a great hub for popular Michigan destinations such as Tahquamenon Falls and Whitefish Point. In addition, the city is also home to some great restaurants. While exploring a little bit of Sault Ste. Marie including the Soo Locks, I head out on a restaurant tour and visit two restaurants.

1. Lockview Restaurant - Open since 1945, the Lockview Restaurant is a popular restaurant in the city which is know for its fresh-caught whitefish. Fishermen catch whitefish from Lake Superior each day and offer some fresh Lake Superior whitefish to the table. I head inside to have some of the great whitefish.

2. Frank's Place - Frank's Place is a popular diner located in town which serves great breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I had previously been there in 2015 for dinner, so I head into Frank's Place for a delicious breakfast full of blueberry pancakes, sausage, and scrambled eggs.

Honorable mention: Karl's Cuisine - Karl's is another top restaurant which offers a lot of great food as well. Although I did not have time to visit it in 2021, I had previously visited it in 2015, and the pasties they cook were superb!
