Best places to visit in Uruguay
Karen A Higgs, the creator of the Guru'Guay website grew up in the South Wales Valleys. At 22 she found herself stranded in Mexico City airport with just a pocket Spanish dictionary for company. Since then she’s lived most of her life in Latin America. She sang 60s covers in a psychedelic rock bar in Costa Rica. In Buenos Aires, she impressed her teenage English language students by riding a 500 cc motorbike around town. In 2000, she moved to Uruguay to lead the communications team at an international non-profit.
A decade later and a change of career, now as the owner of an award-winning guesthouse in Montevideo’s Old City, pleas from grateful guests to share her insider information about the city more widely inspired the popular Guru’Guay website in late 2013. The Guru’Guay website receives almost 200,000 visitors a year.
Since then Karen has published The Guru’Guay Guide to Montevideo (Jan. 2016, 2nd edition out Oct. 2019) – the only English-language city guide to the capital – and its companion The Guru’Guay Guide to Uruguay: Beaches, Ranches & Wine Country (Nov. 2017).
Karen is the only Uruguay guidebook author who actually lives in Uruguay and the difference to the other commercial guidebooks is palpable.

Visiting MONTEVIDEO's Attractions + Eating CHIVITO (Uruguay's National Dish) 🇺🇾
Hello from Montevideo! In today’s video, we'll be visiting some of the city's attractions and also sampling Uruguay's national dish - chivito! We started the morning with a visit to the iconic Palacio Salvo, which is a landmark in Montevideo’s Old Town. This was the tallest building in all of South America up until the year 1935. If you think Palacio Salvo looks familiar, that’s because you can find its twin, Palacio Barolo, across the pond in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Both were designed by the Italian architect Mario Palanti. Originally, the idea for this particular structure was to build a hotel, however, in the end only one floor ever functioned as that, and all the other floors were turned into apartments and office space. During our tour, we also visited the viewing deck on the 25th floor, where you get a bird’s eye view of Montevideo.
Then, we continued to Bar Hispánico for lunch, where we ordered chivito - Uruguay's national dish! Chivito consists of a beef steak, which can be served in sandwich or plated form. It is then topped with a mountain of mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, mayonnaise, olives, bacon, beets, eggs, ham, fries and just about anything else you can imagine. It's a must-try dish for anyone visiting Uruguay.
The following day we explored the beachside neighbourhood of Pocitos, which is beautiful for a stroll along the waterfront. Fun fact: Montevideo's rambla is the longest continuous sidewalk in the world stretching 22.2 kilometres in length down the coast! This is also where you'll find the Montevideo city sign for that classic postcard shot of the city. The sign gets repainted quite often, so you never know what colours or patterns you'll get on your visit.
We hope you enjoy this video and we'll see you again in the next one!

Top 5 Uruguay Food, Uruguay Cuisine You Must Try It Once. #64 @taroballworld #Shorts
Uruguayan cuisine is a delightful blend of European, Indigenous, and African influences, resulting in a unique culinary experience. Known for its rich flavors and hearty dishes, Uruguay's local cuisine reflects its agricultural heritage and the country's love for meat. Here are some iconic dishes you should try when exploring Uruguayan cuisine:
1. Asado: Considered the national dish of Uruguay, asado refers to the traditional barbecue. It involves grilling a variety of meats, including beef, pork, and sausages, over an open fire. The slow cooking process creates succulent and flavorful cuts of meat, which are often accompanied by chimichurri sauce.
2. Chivito: A Uruguayan sandwich that is both hearty and delicious. It typically consists of a tender beef steak, ham, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, tomato, bacon, olives, and mayonnaise, all piled on a bun. Chivito can also include fried eggs and other condiments, making it a satisfying meal.
3. Milanesa: Influenced by Italian cuisine, milanesa is a breaded and fried meat cutlet. The most common version is made with beef, but you can also find variations with chicken or pork. It is often served with mashed potatoes or a side of rice and accompanied by a fresh salad.
4. Empanadas: These savory pastries are a staple in Uruguayan cuisine. Empanadas are filled with a variety of ingredients such as beef, chicken, cheese, ham, onions, and olives. They are baked or fried until golden and make for a delicious snack or appetizer.
5. Pascualina: A traditional Uruguayan pie filled with spinach, eggs, and cheese. The layers of dough encase the savory filling, creating a delightful combination of flavors. Pascualina is often enjoyed as a main course or as part of a light lunch.
6. Mate: While not a dish per se, mate is a significant part of Uruguayan culture. It is a traditional herbal tea made from the leaves of the yerba mate plant. Drinking mate is a social activity, and it is customary to share a gourd of mate with friends and family.
7. Dulce de Leche: A popular sweet treat in Uruguay, dulce de leche is a thick caramel-like spread made from condensed milk. It is used in various desserts, such as alfajores (cookie sandwiches filled with dulce de leche) or served simply with bread or pancakes.
These are just a few highlights of Uruguay's local cuisine. The country also offers a range of seafood dishes, pasta, stews, and regional specialties that showcase the diversity of its culinary traditions. Exploring Uruguayan cuisine will undoubtedly be a delightful experience for food enthusiasts.

Uruguayan Wines - Top vineyards in Uruguay 🍇🇺🇾
Uruguayan Wines - Top vineyards in Uruguay 🍇🇺🇾
With more than 200 wineries, Uruguay is the new world’s undiscovered wine jewel.
Alto de la Ballena
Alto de la Ballena is a boutique vineyard, set in the mineral-rich hills of eastern Uruguay, a short drive from the coast. They were the very first Maldonado winery in an area nowadays considered Uruguay’s most exciting wine region. And you get to do a wine-tasting with the wine-makers overlooking the Laguna del Sauce.
Bodega Cerro Chapeu
Cerro Chapeu lies in the department of Rivera in the very north of Uruguay. It’s a stunning area of flat top hills and unspoiled countryside as far as the eye can see. The ancient red sandy soils offer exceptional drainage, perfect for producing grapes—and wines—of intense flavour and colour.
Nakkal Wines
Founded by three young wine-makers (now two—Santiago Degásperi and Nicolás Monforte), friends from the world of wine, Nakkal specialises in “minimal intervention” wines. Wine making today can commonly use up to 200 and entirely legal additives. Nakkaling approach that tries to do as little as possible beyond making the wine.
Pisano Wines
Looking for a high-quality, full-bodied yet refined expression of Uruguay’s flagship wine, Tannat? Pisano Wines are ready to satiate you with their award-winning private family reserve. The Pisano brothers export to 48 countries but they don’t do tours. They’re too busy ‘cooking’ wine.

Travelling to MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay + Trying URUGUAYAN STEAK + Tannat Wine in the Capital!
In today's video, we'll be travelling from Colonia del Sacramento to Montevideo - the capital of Uruguay - and then we'll be trying Uruguayan steak! So we started the day off in Colonia where we had a few hours to spare before catching the bus to the capital. We spent the morning enjoying a leisurely stroll through the old town, and we also made time to climb the lighthouse, which offers beautiful views of the River Plate and Colonia's old town.
We then made our way to the bus terminal, where we enjoyed a quick lunch of empanadas before getting on the bus to Montevideo. It was a 3-hour journey across farmland and rural towns. Overall, a very enjoyable and easy trip.
Once we arrived in Montevideo, we checked into our apartment overlooking Plaza Independencia, and then it was time to start thinking about food. Of course, for our first meal in the capital, we decided to try Uruguayan steak. Much like neighbouring Argentina, Uruguay enjoys a very high reputation for the quality of its beef.
We ate at a steakhouse called El Fogón, where we ordered the 'entrecot', which is the ribeye steak and one of the most popular cuts of meat in Uruguay. We paired this with a Tannat wine, which is the national grape of Uruguay. Overall a great meal and a wonderful start to our trip in Montevideo!
Restaurant address: El Fogón, San José 1080, 11100 Montevideo, Uruguay
