Entering Sandakan Sabah in 2024 🇲🇾 This City Is Amazing!
I’ve traveled to Sandakan, Sabah in Malaysian Borneo. I got the bus solo from Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, as a solo female. The journey took nearly 8 hours and I was mainly traveling with Sabahans and Malay locals, who were very kind and friendly. Finally, I arrived at the beautiful city of Sandakan and Sepilok which is based nearby. These are the must-see places on the island of Borneo. Sandakan is amazing and surprised me in many ways with delicious Malaysian street food markets, good infrastructure to get to the animal sanctuaries, and the seaside. But I would say the area around my hotel at night was not super safe, the receptionist lady insisted on always coming out with me in the evening, even to go to the nearest shop (which was very kind and caring).
I will be discovering the hidden gems of Sabah, including Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC), Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), Turtle Islands National Park and The Kinabatangan River. Here is the best travel guide which includes things to do, places to see, and solo travel tips and travel advice for Sabah, Malaysia, on the island of Borneo.

The ultimate itinerary to Sabah, Borneo (Sandakan,, Kinabatangan River, and Tabin) (EP 0 :Sabah)
Welcome to the Land Below the Wind, Sabah!
This video is produced based on our nine-day trip to the east coast of Sabah, visiting Sandakan, Lower Kinabatangan River, and Tabin.
This is where Orangutans swing branch to branch, where the Sulu Sea and the South China Sea meet, pygmy elephants roam in herds, and where a land of myriad people celebrate their cultural heritage.
During our trip, we saw more animals and birds than we wanted - pygmy elephant, proboscis monkey, sun bear, and orangutan. We also tried the unique Sandakan food and had the freshest seafood.

About Sandakan:
Sandakan, formerly known as Elopura is the second-largest city in Sabah, East Malaysia, on the north-eastern coast of Borneo. It is located on the east coast of the island. It is the administrative centre of Sandakan Division and was the former capital of British North Borneo. Sandakan is known as the gateway for ecotourism destinations in Sabah, such as the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, the Rainforest Discovery Centre, Turtle Islands Park, Kinabatangan River and Gomantong Caves.
The area is also infamous as the site of a World War II Japanese airfield, now known as Sandakan Airport, which was built by the forced labour of 6,000 Javanese civilians and Allied prisoners of war. In 1945, the surviving Australian prisoners were sent on the Sandakan Death Marches; only 6 of them survived the war.
