Fracchie - San Marco in Lamis, Italy - Easter 2012
San Marco in Lamis, a small town on Puglia's Gargano peninsula, has a longstanding Good Friday tradition. A statue of the Madonna of sorrows is paraded through the town, with her way lit by wooden torches. Over the years, these Fracchie have grown in size to the current maximum of about two metres diameter, ten metres long and about ten ton weight... Dozens of these are pulled by teams of residents from three years old upwards, and the procession lasts all evening, sparks flying as the road gets knee-deep in embers. Read more at

Discover Gargano (Apulia - Italy): Grava Grande - A portal to the unknown
The Gargano Promontory, in northern Apulia, is a veritable karst cave. Taking advantage of the most subsiding fractures, the waters, through complex chemical-physical processes, have created caves and chasms in the characteristic limestone rock of this territory. In some cases, it has dug so deep as to give rise to real chasms. The areas of San Marco in Lamis and San Giovanni Rotondo, count some of the most impressive of these karst morphologies, such as Grava di Zazzano (depth of 107 meters) and Grava di Campolato (depth of 304 meters).
Grava Grande is a fossil swallowhole, in a locality called Mormoramento, in the territory of San Nicandro Garganico (FG), in northern Apulia. It has a maximum opening of more than 10 meters and a depth of 50 meters. Grava Grande was explored several times by various local and national speleological groups. In particular, Gruppo Grotte Milano, which was particularly interested in the Sannicandrese territory, carried out its first survey, in 1967. Dive with us into this wonderful adventure. What is this grava hiding?

Gargano - Apulia - Italia
