Iztapa , or Puerto de Iztapa, is a municipality in the Escuintla department of Guatemala. It is located on the shores of the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by Michatoya and Maria Linda Rivers, and also by the Canal de Chiquimulilla. Its population is about 15,000 people.
Iztapa is a small port town along Guatemala’s Pacific coast that’s well known for sailfishing. The fishing here truly is incredible—it’s common to haul in 15-20 Pacific sailfish each day. The surfing is good too, and there isn’t much competition for waves. Despite its somewhat dilapidated appearance, Iztapa has historic significance. As Guatemala’s original port, it was used by Spanish conqueror Pedro de Alvarado to build and harbor the boats that he would eventually sail to Peru.
The fishing at Iztapa has contributed to Guatemala being nicknamed the Sailfish Capital of the World. The records here are indeed impressive—the world records for conventional and fly-fishing single-day catches (75 and 23, respectively) were both set here. On average you can expect to catch between 15-25 Pacific sailfish each day.
Why all the fish? Ocean currents from El Salvador and Mexico mix here to create an eddy rich in the kinds of pelagic fish (like herring and mackerel) that sailfish and marlin eat. There are also large numbers of yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and dorado. The fishing is generally good year-round.
The black-sand beach at Iztapa is clean and wide and you’ll likely have the whole place to yourself. The surf is fairly consistent and is usually right-handers. One thing is for sure – you won’t have to fight for waves.

Esquipulas te brinda toda la información de la ciudad de Esquipulas ubicada en el municipio de Chiquimula en el país de Guatemala, estamos ubicados en la parte trifinio entre Honduras y El Salvador.
Costumbres y tradiciones
En Esquipulas se encuentra uno de los lugares de peregrinación más descollantes de Mesoamérica, por la advocación al Cristo Negro, que ha generado múltiples leyendas, como por ejemplo de que este Cristo es negro porque está asentado en un cerro encantado de los ancestrales pobladores mayas, que tenían como deidad a un dios de Xibalbá que se pintaba de negro.
Las celebraciones del Señor de Esquipulas en el mes de enero conllevan peregrinaciones, rezos, penitencias, novenarios, cumplimientos de promesas, ofrendas, agradecimientos y exvotos. Sus rituales forman todo un mundo sacro alrededor de su culto.
Debe de insistirse que el arraigo de esta veneración, se conecta directamente con las deidades prehispánicas chortíes, que sincretizadas y redemantizadas por los españoles desde los inicios de la colonización dieron como resultado una tradición maravillosa. Peregrinar a los centros sagrados ha sido una de las constantes de la cultura del guatemalteco desde los tiempos arcaicos. Hilos que tejen la trama de este envoltorio fascinante son las rutas sacras y los caminos que conducen al sacro epicentro de santos, deidades y nahuales. Los hombres que habitan los pueblos que transitan por ellos cargados de candelas, pom, incienso, licor blanco, henchidos de oraciones y oblaciones. Con el alma prendida de misticismo van a buscar a los antepasados en cerros, valles, templos y santuarios.
Las peregrinaciones al templo de Esquipulas, para venerar al Cristo Negro constituyen uno de los movimientos sociales de mayor profusión desde los tiempos prehispánicos hasta nuestros dias, la simbiosis perfecta entre antiguas creencias y la fe cristiana.
Es el sincretismo, el cristianismo animista guatemalteco en todo su esplendor. Las peregrinaciones a Esquipulas flanquean la Historia, desde las profundidades del mito antiguo hasta los rituales contemporáneos. Cambian los templos, pero las esencias de la creencia han permanecido por más de setecientos años, desde 1200 d. de C. hasta nuestros días, sin mayores modificaciones.
La Cueva De Las Minas: Están ubicadas al sur de la ciudad a un costado de la Basílica y a un kilómetro de distancia de la carretera que conduce a Honduras, existen algunos cerros del cual uno de ellos fue perforado en forma de cruz acostada de norte a sur, en las márgenes del Río Chacalapa o de los Milagros.
La Piedra De Los Compadres: Esquipulas tiene tanta historia a cuál más emotiva y simpática, que hasta las piedras tienen su historia, este monumento natural se encuentra al norte de la ciudad y a dos kilómetros de distancia, situado exactamente donde pasa la carretera antigua de terracería que conectaba a Esquipulas con Quezaltepeque y Chiquimula.

Guatemala is crossed by a large chain of volcanoes. Between Mexico in the north and the neighbors to the south (Honduras & Salvador), there are no less than 300 volcanic structures, of which 37 are recognized as volcanoes. Three of them are active today!
