Driving Hungary: Route 21 Hatvan - Salgótarján - 4k scenic drive at the foothills of Matra Mountains
After many roadtrips through other parts of the beautiful Hungary, it's time to explore also the nice region at the foothills of Matra Mountains, the heighest of the country, while driving from the M3 motorway to Salgótarján. We follow the valley of the Zagyva valley upstream, on a nice great quality national road, mostly 2x2 and with many 2-level interchanges. Enjoy!

Eger, Magyarország 4K
Eger is the county seat of Heves, and the second largest city in Northern Hungary (after Miskolc). A city with county rights. Eger is best known for its castle, thermal baths, baroque buildings, the northernmost Ottoman minaret, dishes and red wines. Its population of around 53,000 makes it the 19th largest centre of population in Hungary according to the census. The town is located on the Eger Stream, on the hills of the Bükk Mountains.

Egerszólát, Hungary
Egerszólát is a small village in Heves county, in the north-eastern part of Hungary, west of Eger. It is located in Eger Wine Region and is famous in Hungary for its white wine called 'Egerszóláti Olaszrizling'.

Sirok Castle was carved into an enormous rock. You can explore the mysterious dungeon network created inside the hill of rhyolitic tuff as you wander the whole area of the ruin. Its unique feature is the permanent exhibition preserving the memory of the Ottoman castle guards living here at the beginning of the 17th century.

𝗥𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝘂𝗳𝗮 (𝗞𝗮𝘇á𝗿, Hungary) The rhyolite tuff is a lunar landscape reminiscent wrinkled surface, stone deeply carved wrinkles, deserted with no vegetation. Is also called the Hungarian Cappadocia. The snow-white color of the liparite is the result of a large volcanic eruption 20 million years ago.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗭𝗮𝗴𝘆𝘃𝗮𝗿ó𝗻𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀, 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗸𝗵𝗲𝗴𝘆 (Pintértelep, Hungary) weren’t shaped by nature, but by human hands. In Salgótarján and Zagyvaróna, there was once a mining activity of ore and coal. During processing, the by-product from the smelters was accumulated in so-called barren vomit. Over time, the mines exhausted and closed, the factories were demolished to almost no trace. But the cinder cone mountains still show today that there was once a significant industrial activity here.

Castle of Sirok - HUNGARY - 4K
The fortress stands on the border of the Bükk Mountains and the Mátra Mountains over the place where the valley of Tarna creek becomes wider. Its Slavic name may originate from here: Sirok. It was built in mediaeval times in the valley of Tarna creek where it was possible to block and check the Northern roads, although it was mainly a squire's private castle with very little strategic value. The settlement was founded later; written sources first mention the castle in 1267, while the name of the settlement first appears in written form in 1302 as Sirák.
The castle is divided into two different parts. The upper castle originally had inner columns, and its ground-plan was irregularly shaped. It was protected by a stone wall 10 metres below its level, carved into the rocks surrounding it. The lower castle with its three right angle ground-plan, ancient, Italian-type forts was erected later. Excavations proved that it had been a private fortress first and it became part of the border castle system later. Its oldest part is the residential keep, which was placed in the middle of the upper castle. The double barrel vaults, which can still be seen in the middle of the upper castle, make one conclude that as a rule with these types of fortresses it contained a bigger hall (knights’ hall) for receptions and conclaves, probably in the residential keep. Real protection was provided by the lower castle, where three ancient Italian forts were erected. The forts on the corners were built of broad stone. The rocks below the castle contain some hive niches that can be seen in other parts of this region as well.
