Discovering MONTSERRAT: The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean's Rich History & Resilience
Montserrat dubbed the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, is a UK overseas territory in the Lesser Antilles. Plymouth, its former capital, was devastated by volcanic eruptions, leading to relocation to Brades. Christopher Columbus discovered it in 1493. The island boasts a diverse culture influenced by Africa, North America, and Europe. Despite eruptions altering its landscape, Montserrat remains rich in natural beauty. The population, predominantly of African descent, faced emigration due to volcanic crises. The economy, reliant on tourism and agriculture, struggled post-natural disasters. Montserratians maintain cultural traditions, cuisine, and a resilient spirit. Political history includes shifts in governance and challenges with independence.

MONTSERRAT Monastery — it's an unbelievable beauty.
Magic and divinity, history and fiction - it's all Montserrat (translated from Catalan as a jagged, cut mountain).
The spiritual symbol of Catalonia.
The mountain is 1236 metres high, and at an altitude of 725 metres is the Benedictine Monastery (Monestir Santa Maria de Montserrat), a religious pilgrimage centre for Catholics from all over the world.
The Holy Immaculate Virgin Mary of Montserrat (Black Madonna), the Mother of God and the child on her lap are the main relics of the monastery, and in her right hand she holds a ball, a symbol of our world.
The first mention of the mountain dates back to 880. At that time a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was discovered here. According to tradition, it was carved by St Luke and brought to Catalonia by the Apostle Peter. During the Muslim raids in the 8th century, the statue was safely hidden on the mountain.
The Virgin Mary is said to grant wishes. Not material wishes, but spiritual ones. I would even say sacred.
Montserrat is a miracle of the Catalan land and you want to come here again and again !!!

Montserrat is one incredibly beautiful mountainous Caribbean island, part of the Lesser Antilles chain and a British Overseas Territory. Sadly Its Soufrière Hills volcano first erupted in the 1990s, causing devastation to the southern part of the island which is now an exclusion zone. The north part of the island is largely unaffected, and has unique black sand beaches, coral reefs, breath taking cliffs, shoreline caves and a new city.
Visitors are politely told that Montserrat is not a volcano; it has a volcano and assured that the north part of the Island remains entirely safe, with the Soufrière Hills volcano is under round-the-clock monitoring by a MVO “Montserrat volcano observatory”. As is often the way in the aftermath of disaster, the close-knit community has forged stronger bonds than ever. Crime is a rarity, front doors and vehicles are unlocked, with the PEOPLE making the island magical. For first-time visitors to the Caribbean island of Montserrat, some of the local vocabulary evokes Geology 101. Words like “pyroclastic flow,” “seismic” and “dome collapse” pop up often in conversations with native islanders and longtime residents.
There is much to do in Montserrat other that visiting volcano devastation exclusion zones, there is epic nature hiking trails, black sand beaches, even a nice hike that will take you to the only white sand beach on the island. Drop an email to Sunny Lea, he is a wealth of local knowledge and is an amazing tour guide.
We wish to extend a special thanks to:

Stay tuned we are working on publishing our next video of parts of the exclusion zone.

My Journey to Montserrat
Recorded August 21, 2008.
Montserrat is a mountain near Barcelona, in Catalonia. It is the site of a Benedictine abbey, Santa Maria de Montserrat, which hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary and which is identified by some with the location of the Holy Grail in Arthurian myth. Montserrat literally means jagged mountain in Catalan. It describes the peculiar aspect of the rock formation, which is visible from a great distance. The mountain is composed of strikingly pink conglomerate, a form of sedimentary rock, popular with climbers.
The video begins as we drive up the mountain to Montserrat. Upon our arrival we were treated with a beautiful concert of the church's bells. During my visit I ride the Sant Joan funicular to the summit for great views of the area.

About Montserrat: Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean. It is part of the Leeward Islands, the northern portion of the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies. Montserrat is about 16 km (10 mi) long and 11 km (7 mi) wide, with roughly 40 km (25 mi) of coastline. It is nicknamed The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean both for its resemblance to coastal Ireland and for the Irish ancestry of many of its inhabitants. Montserrat is the only non-fully sovereign full member of the Caribbean Community and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. On 18 July 1995, the previously dormant Soufrière Hills volcano, in the southern part of the island, became active. Eruptions destroyed Montserrats Georgian era capital city of Plymouth. Between 1995 and 2000, two-thirds of the islands population was forced to flee, primarily to the United Kingdom, leaving fewer than 1,200 people on the island in 1997 (rising to nearly 5,000 by 2016). The volcanic activity continues, mostly affecting the vicinity of Plymouth... In 2015, it was announced that planning would begin on a new town and port at Little Bay on the northwest coast of the island. While additional plans proceeded, the centre of government and businesses was moved to Brades. After a number of delays, including Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 and the COVID-19 pandemic beginning in early 2020, in June 2022, ground was broken on the Little Bay Port Development Project, a £28 million project funded by the UK and the Caribbean Development Bank. Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. 14 Mistakes People Make When Visiting.
Find out 14 mistakes people make when visiting the Sagrada Familia. In this video and take a tour through the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. This stunning cathedral is arguably the most beautiful church in the world. Find out why and let me explain to you the common mistakes that people frequently make when visiting (or planning a visit) to the Sagrada Familia.

11:43 Biggest Mistake - Final Thoughts
I recently explored the stunning Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, and let me tell you, it's a must-see. But here are some common mistakes people make, and how you can avoid them.
Firstly, remember that Sagrada Familia is still under construction. Don't be surprised by cranes and scaffolding; it started in 1882, and they're aiming to finish around 2026. Plan accordingly.
Booking online is crucial. Forget about walk-up tickets; those days are gone. I made the mistake of assuming I could get one on the spot – big error. So, book your tickets online well in advance.
Download the app before your visit. It's got audio tours, and trust me, you'll want it. I regret not bringing my AirPods for a better audio experience.
When you first arrive, don't rush inside. Take a moment to appreciate the Nativity facade; the details are incredible, and it's where architect Anthony Gaudí personally worked.
The interior is breathtaking. The columns resemble a forest reaching to the sky. Check out the stained glass windows, soak in the atmosphere, and don't rush through.
The controversial part – the tower tour. It's an extra cost, and honestly, it didn't blow me away. You get a glimpse of the city, but it's not a 360-degree view. Passion Tower is slightly better, but manage your expectations.
Exiting the building, don't miss the museum. It's worth spending some time there, with cool exhibits and 3D models showing the cathedral's design evolution.
Visit the bookstore; you might find high-quality items. It's a hidden gem. And don't expect Sagrada Familia to light up like the Eiffel Tower at night; it's not quite as spectacular.
Explore the neighborhood; there are great shops and restaurants. I recommend a pedestrian walkway north of Sagrada Familia for a lovely dinner view.
Lastly, the biggest mistake is not visiting Sagrada Familia when in Barcelona. Don't be like those guys who bailed for the bar scene. It's truly one of the most beautiful buildings on the planet. Plan at least half a day for this spectacular experience.
