Visiting The Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq and travel the death road.
The 120km from Baghdad north to the holy Shia city Samarra along the highway also known as the “death road” (not to be mistaken by the Highway of Death in Southern Iraq) by American soldiers after the 2003 invasion due to all the IEDs which was laced along the road.
In 2014 ISIS captured this area of Iraq, and the held it up to only a few years back, so there´s no surprise that´s there more than 50 checkpoints put up along the highway. Some often only a few hundred meters between.
Photographing a Crazy Mosque in Samarra, Iraq
Next up on the Iraqi photo trip is a visit to the Unesco Heritage Site of Samarra where my goal is to photograph the Malwiya, a massive spiraling mosque. This part of Iraq is run by a militant group not part of the Iraqi government. It's safe, but they take many precautions before allowing you inside. Watch to see a unique technique for getting the perfect shot.

🇮🇶 Spiral Giant Mosque of Samarra in Iraq #shorts
The Great Mosque of Samarra is one of the great Wonders of Iraq. It was built hundreds of years ago and is probably one of the most beautiful spiral towers I've ever seen. I walked all the way to the top and I won't lie...I was scared LOL. Anyway it was worth it for the view and to have that experience and the same walk people made hundreds of years ago. This was filmed in October 2022.

Monuments of Samarra. Iraq. UNESCO Heritage.
The Great Mosque complex is protected by UNESCO as one of the other antiquities of Samarra, together constituting a World Heritage Site. The site, inscribed in the cultural heritage category of the List, is located on the site of the once powerful Islamic capital, whose rule extended over the provinces of the Abbasid Empire, which lasted for a century and stretched from Tunisia to Central Asia.

The amazing WEDDING CAKE MOSQUE! 🇮🇶 سامراء
Travel to Samarra, Iraq on a day trip from Baghdad in 2022 and visit Malwiya Tower, the rounded minaret of the Great Mosque of Samarra. For a time, the Grand Mosque of Samara was the biggest mosque in the world. One of the great examples of Islamic architecture, the minaret looks like an upside-down wedding cake and is one of the best places to see and things to do in Iraq. Muslim pilgrims from all over the world walk around and up to the top of Malwiya Minaret.
Samarra is also famous for the shrine to Imam Al-Askari and Ali al-Hadi, who are buried in one of the most important Shia shrines in the world. We were allowed to use our cameras inside the holy Shiite Al-Askari Shrine (مَرْقَد ٱلْإِمَامَيْن عَلِيّ ٱلْهَادِي وَٱلْحَسَن ٱلْعَسْكَرِيّ) and I couldn't believe my eyes! This mosque was bombed in 2006 by Al-Qaida and the outside still hasn't completely been repaired but the place is still incredible and the inside is outrageously spectacular.
Nearby in Samarra we also visited several fortresses including the Khalifa Palace, the seat of government in 9th century Samarra, and Qasr al-Alhiq, a historical palace dating back to the Abbasid era.
And finally, I taste delicious Iraqi Food, this time their version of Iraqi Dolmas, which is a MASSIVE plate of veggies stuffed with rice and tasty hunks of meat.
Inside SAMARRA, Iraq's Most DANGEROUS City! Not What We EXPECTED!
One of the hardest places to visit, SAMARRA! Multiple military checkpoints to leave the city of Iraq and then multiple checkpoints to enter the area of Saladin, all to see this unique invention, the Spiral Minaret. With no barriers or railings to precent you from falling off, the walk up is a tricky one, especially when the wind is HORRIFIC like it was for us today! On the way back we made friends with some members of the forces who really wanted a photo with us!
