Aveiro Canals - The Venice of Portugal

The capital of the Ria, a vast lagoon where the freshwater of the River Vouga joins with the sea, Aveiro is intersected by canals, genuine streets of water, along which can be seen gliding the brightly coloured boats known as barcos moliceiros. Originally founded in the time of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Aveiro is now one of the most interesting cities on the Portuguese coast.

Due to the large numbers of web-footed birds that once inhabited this lagoon area, the city's first name was Aviarium.

D. João I (r. 1383-1433) gave Aveiro to his son, Prince Pedro, who ordered the city's first walls to be built, although these have since disappeared. Later, D. João II (r. 1481-1495), gave the city to his sister, Princess Joana, a lay sister at the Convento de Jesus, which now houses the Museu de Aveiro.

In the 16th century, the development of the salt industry, agriculture and fishing and the first cod-fishing expeditions to the distant Newfoundland in 1501 brought Aveiro a period of great prosperity, which led to its being awarded a charter by D. Manuel I in 1515.

However, in the winter of 1575, heavy storms destroyed the deep channel that had once linked the Ria to the sea, this was where the great ocean-going vessels would dock in Aveiro thereby destroying the maritime trade, fishing and salting businesses.
Barra Nova was built in the 19th century. Being opened to the ocean in 1808, it gave rise to the formation of a wide channel measuring roughly 264 metres across and about 4 to 6 metres deep. This channel opened the Ria to the sea and restored the source of the region's life and its very survival.

The Ria is linked to Aveiro via three canals: the Canal das Pirâmides (marked at its entrance by two stone pyramids), which extends into the Canal Central, the Canal de São Roque, which marks the limits of the city to the north-west and separates it from the salt-pans; and the Canal dos Santos Mártires (or the Canal do Paraíso) which leads to the south-west.

Using the Canal Central as the city's main axis, we suggest two tours of Aveiro:
- On the Left Bank, begin by admiring the graceful Art Nouveau buildings, which are beautifully reflected in the canal, stroll through the Mercado do Peixe (Fish Market), wander around the Beira Mar district and along the canal banks and savour the gentle sea breeze.
- On the Right Bank, visit the city museum housed in the Convento de Jesus. Monuments and churches, as well as the hustle and bustle of city life taking place under the diffuse light of the Ria, all add to the charm of this coastal city.

Evidently, all visitors will also want to discover more about the Ria de Aveiro. The two suggested itineraries will introduce you to the labyrinth of canals, the white sand dunes by the sea and the vast expanses of salt-marshes with their pyramids of white salt.
If you enjoy nature trekking, the Reserva Natural das Dunas de São Jacinto is truly irresistible.

Exploring Europe’s MOST EXPENSIVE Chapel - Igreja de São Roque - EXPLORING LISBON

► VISIT TOURABUNGA.COM: Experience Lisbon like a local with Tourabunga. Insider tips, local recommendations, and all the information you need to discover the city's hidden gems. →

Yes, Europe’s most expensive chapel is here in Lisbon Portugal. After some tasty vegan, we explore the fascinating church Igreja de São Roque. Lisbon’s Igreja de São Roque (Church of Saint Roch) sports a deceptively plain white facade, but the interior of the 17th-century building is home to some of the most prized (and allegedly expensive) Catholic art and architecture in all of Europe.

Our journey begins at a tasty Vegan restaurant called The Green Affair. From there we pick up a bag of terrific coffee at Fabrica Coffee Roasters. We then duck into Landeau Chocolate in Chiado and treat ourselves to another slice of the World’s Best Chocolate cake. With our bellies full, we make our way up a hilly street to quite an incredible church, Church of Sao Roque (Igreja de São Roque). You’d never know it from the facade that the interior holds wonderment for the eyes.

Located in the Bairro Alto neighborhood of Lisbon, the site of the Igreja de São Roque was initially used in the early 1500s as a shrine for Saint Roch, who was the patron saint of plague victims. The site was (at the time) located outside of Lisbon’s city limits in a location that had been used as a burial ground for victims of the plague. When the Jesuits arrived in Portugal later in the 16th century, King John III allowed them to use the site of the shrine to construct a church on the grounds that Saint Roch would be given a chapel in the building and remain the church’s namesake saint.

The Igreja de São Roque still works as a functional church, but it is also open to the public and houses a museum highlighting the art and history of the church. It’s a highly suggested stop for anyone visiting Lisbon.

We discover a few other things and make a few friends along the way. Why not tell your neighbors across the street and have a watch party with the latest episode of Tourabunga. Thanks for watching!

The Church of Sao Roque And It's Ceiling Painting - Lisbon Travel Blog

The outside of the church is very unassuming but the moment you step inside it will make your jaw drop. The ceiling painting of Francisco Venegas is so beautiful and huge. It will take you a while to take it all in. The attached museum is also well worth a visit.

Madeira, Portugal [4K] São Roque. Igreja, Miradouro, Moradias, Funchal. 2021 Madeira Island

Video recorded on April 4, 2021. Weather: 16° C / 60.8 °F

São Roque is a parish since March 1579 and was established in the former chapel of São Roque, built in the early sixteenth century by the locals with the help of municipal funds, since São Roque was one of the patrons of Funchal, who protected the population against the plague.

The initial small chapel gave way to a church built in 1704 near that location, which eventually collapsed in 1790. A new church was then built. The construction lasted until 1820 and the finishings until mid-nineteenth century.

The São Roque Viewpoint, in front of São Roque Parish Church, offers a panoramic view of the Funchal amphitheatre.Located in the parish of São Roque, in front of the parish church, the viewpoint is named after the patron saint and offers an extensive view of Funchal amphitheatre.

Restaurante Típico Miradouro de São Roque:
Right next to the church you can find the Restaurante Típico Miradouro de São Roque where you can taste many great dishes, including the house specialties, the Frango á Moda da Casa no Fogareiro (Chicken on the Stove) and the Espetada Regional (Madeiran Beef Skewer).

Most expensive chapel in Europe in Roca Church, Lisbon

Absolutely Amazing The Igreja de São Roque (Church of Saint Roch) in Lisbon. The most notable chapel is the 18th-century Chapel of St. John the Baptist (Capela de São João Baptista), a project by Nicola Salvi and Luigi Vanvitelli constructed in Rome of many precious stones and disassembled, shipped and reconstructed in São Roque; at the time it was reportedly the most expensive chapel in Europe.

Essential Stops To Make While In Lisbon, Portugal #Travel #Vlog

For my third day in Lisbon, I started the day in Chiado with breakfast at 7th Brunch Coffee. The food here was delicious and keep in mind there are several restaurant options to choose from in this neighborhood. After breakfast I Ubered over to to the Carmo Convent, the entrance fee was 5 euros and well worth it. From artifacts that range from religious relics to tombs, the actual church structure itself is fascinating to walk through, because they did not rebuild after the earthquake it’s almost as if it’s stuck in time. The QR code makes it really easy to do a self-guided tour and go at your own pace.

From the convent, it’s a short 5-minute walk to the next stop - the Igreja De Sao Roque. This church is beautiful with several small ornate baroque style chapels and altars on the inside but the highlight is the church’s ceiling. The ceiling is made of Prussian wood and is flat but the painting by Venegas includes 3 domes that simulate a dome and give it an architectural perspective.

Next stop was the Miradouro De Sao Pedro De Alcantara which was a minute walk from the Igreja De Sao Roque. Here you will find beautiful scenic views of Lisbon. I Ubered from the Miradouro to the Feira de Ladra Flea market - make sure to check out the flea market hours of operation, I was bummed I got there late and they were wrapping up. If you time it right the National Pantheon is literally across the street from the Flea Market area and would be a great stop.

From here we made out way to LX Factory via Uber. This is an old factory converted into a food hall with great little eaters and retail shops. We stopped for a quick snack before dinner but it would be a great place for dinner and drinks.

We decided to have dinner at the Time Out Market (we Ubered from LX to this location). Time Out is similar to LX Factory in that it also is a food hall with many little eateries offering a variety of cuisines. I chose to eat at Ground Burger and it was delicious. There was live music and a really great lively atmosphere. Overall it was a very nice easy-going day that was much needed as I was feeling a bit worn out after several days of travel.

Museu dos Baleeiros, Pico | Historical Sites | Azores Top 10 Things To Do

Museu dos Baleeiros
The museum of whalers is located in the old warehouses of whaling boats, these buildings date back to the 18th century and are open to tourists from all around the world. And although the last whale was hunted in the Azores in 1987, hunting techniques have not evolved since the Moby Dick era. The unfortunate recognition of a century of whaling culture reaffirms the desire to preserve the Memory of this modus vivendi that deeply marked the habitants of the archipelago.

Museu do Vinho, Pico | Historical Sites | Azores Top 10 Things To Do

Museu do Vinho Installed in the former Carmelite Convent dating back to the XVII/XVIII centuries, the Pico Wine Museum was inaugurated in 1999. It is an extension of the Pico Museum, representing one of the most important elements of the island's history and economy. Among other things, it organizes visits to the vineyards and wine tastings. The collection of the museum is essentially constituted by ethnographic pieces, objects linked to the cycles - vegetable, industrial and socialization - of winemaking.
