A two stepped base and plinth which was surmounted by an obelisk and winged figure of Victory but only the plinth now remains. Name plaques used to be attached to the sides of the base of the memorial. The winged Victory stood with an olive branch of peace held in her right hand and a crusader's sword held in her left.
At her neck her clothing was held together by a small St George and the Dragon. Three wreaths with engagement bands were carved on the obelisk.

Places to see in ( Royston - UK )
Places to see in ( Royston - UK )
Royston is a town and civil parish in the District of North Hertfordshire and county of Hertfordshire in England. Royston is situated on the Greenwich Meridian, which brushes the town's eastern boundary, and at the northernmost apex of the county on the same latitude as towns such as Milton Keynes and Ipswich. It is about 43 miles (69 km) north of central London in a rural area. Before the boundary changes of the 1890s, the boundary between Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire ran east–west through the centre of town along the middle of Melbourn Street.
Until 1540 Royston was divided between five parishes: Barkway, Reed and Therfield in Hertfordshire and Melbourn and Kneesworth in Cambridgeshire. In that year it became a separate ecclesiastical parish, partly in each county. Ralph de Rochester founded the Augustinian priory which originated as a chapel for three canons and was later expanded to seven or more regular canons. Royston had two hospitals or free chapels, as well as the monastery.
Royston Town Council was formed in 1974 as the successor to Royston Urban District Council. The council consists of fifteen councillors headed by a town mayor (currently Mayor lucille shears) The councillors are elected for three wards named Heath, Meridian and Palace. Among the town council's responsibilities are allotments, Royston Cave, Royston Museum, local festivals, public halls and the town's war memorial. In December 2007 Royston Town Council was awarded the nationally recognised status of Quality Town Council. This Award confirms that Royston Town Council is run in accordance with the high standards required by the National Association of Local Councils and other government bodies.
Royston sits at the junction of the A10 and A505 roads, both of which are important road links through Hertfordshire and beyond. The town is also convenient for fast links to London and the north, as it is only a short distance from both the A1(M) and M11 motorways. Nearby air transport links include London Luton and London Stansted airports, both of which are major air hubs in the south of England. Royston railway station provides direct commuter links to both London and Cambridge. It is on the Cambridge Line and is a stopping point for regular services operated by Great Northern Route.
The public open space and nature reserve of Therfield Heath (also known as Royston Heath) overlooks the town from a hill to the south-west. The Icknield Way Path passes through the village on its 110-mile journey from Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire to Knettishall Heath in Suffolk. In 1742 a strange cave carved out of the chalk was discovered in the centre of Royston. Royston Cave is located underneath the central crossroads of the town. The carvings in the cave have led to much speculation about the origin and function of the cave.

The Vile Town of Oldham
What would you like to know about Oldham? Hey there, folks! It’s a beautiful day to be alive. Welcome! Today, we're diving deep into the heart of Lancashire to uncover the secrets of a town that has often been a topic of mixed opinions. Buckle up as we take you on a journey to explore the infamous town of Blackpool. Although this town is known by some as a coastal gem for its vibrant entertainment and stunning seaside views, you'll discover that it has its fair share of quirks and challenges that might just make you think twice about calling it home. So, whether you're a curious traveller or simply want to learn more about what makes or breaks a place, is Blackpool a good place to live?
Dangerous City to Live In
Let’s begin by telling you this bitter truth about Blackpool. Trust us, it is not all sunshine and rainbows. Are you ready to peel back the layers of this shadowy town? Well then, please just keep following along. Blackpool holds the title of the most dangerous major town in Lancashire, and it is not backing down from that reputation. It ranks as the third most dangerous location overall out of a whopping 236 towns, villages, and cities in the county. In 2022, the overall crime rate hit a staggering 162 crimes per 1,000 people, a figure that stands head and shoulders above Lancashire's overall rate of 83 per 1,000 residents.
Looking at the national stage, Blackpool takes the podium as the third most dangerous major town in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and it ranks 174th overall in the list of all towns, cities, and villages. The numbers don't lie—Blackpool has a story to tell, and you need to learn more.
Next, we take a look at the drama of the months. May 2022 painted a grim picture as Blackpool claimed the dubious title of having the worst bicycle theft rate in Lancashire, with 40 reported cases and a crime rate of 0.27 per 1,000 inhabitants. October 2022 wasn't any better, marking Blackpool as Lancashire's burglary hotspot, recording a staggering 97 cases at a rate of 0.67 per 1,000 residents. And then, as the year came to a close, December 2022 was a dark month with 142 reports of criminal damage and arson, earning Blackpool the title of having the highest crime rate for these offences in Lancashire at 0.97.
But amidst the shadows, there's a stark reality to confront. Violence and sexual offences dominate the crime landscape in Blackpool, with a staggering 11,339 incidents reported in 2022, translating to a crime rate of 78. This marks a 6 per cent increase from the previous year, a haunting reminder of the challenges the town faces. On a brighter note, bicycle theft is the least common crime here, with 205 reported cases in 2022, marking a 38 per cent increase from 2021's figure. So, as you step into Blackpool, remember that beneath the glitz and glamour of its seaside charm, there's a town with its unique story, a story that keeps you on your toes and reminds you to stay vigilant.

Alexandra Park OLDHAM, Greater Manchester. One of the best parks in the GM districts.
Taken last Autumn when the leaves were falling. My first trip to Alexandra Park in Oldham since the early 80s. It hasn't really changed much though over the last 10 years they have restored and cleaned up the park after years of suffering through Maggie Thatcher's years when the Toriescut all the park keepers and funding from local authorities which resulted in the neglect of public parks in the 1980s. Oldham MBC have done a great job of restoring the park and the team of voluntary planters do an excellent just of keeping the park in bloom in the summer. I'll be back for a summer visit this year - Covid-19 permitting.

Places to see in ( Rochdale - UK )
Rochdale is a town in Greater Manchester, England, at the foothills of the South Pennines on the River Roch, 5.3 miles northwest of Oldham and 9.8 miles northeast of Manchester. Rochdale is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale .
Rochdale rose to prominence in the 19th century as a mill town and centre for textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution. It was a boomtown of the Industrial Revolution, and amongst the first industrialised towns. The Rochdale Canal—one of the major navigable broad canals of the United Kingdom—was a highway of commerce during this time used for the haulage of cotton, wool and coal to and from the area.
Rochdale is the birthplace of the modern Co-operative Movement, to which more than one billion people worldwide belonged in 2012. The Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society was founded in 1844 by 28 local residents as a response to the high cost and frequent adulteration of basic foodstuffs by shopkeepers at the time. The Pioneers were notable for combining the notion of the patronage dividend alongside investing trading surplus for member benefit, especially in education. The Rochdale Principles, the set of ideals which underpinned the society, are still used, in updated form, by the International Co-operative Alliance. The Rochdale Pioneers shop was the precursor to The Co-operative Group, the largest consumer co-operative in the world.
Rochdale today is a predominantly residential town. Rochdale Town Hall—a Grade I listed building—dates from 1871 and is one of the United Kingdom's finest examples of Victorian Gothic revival architecture
Rochdale stands about 150 feet (46 m) above sea level, 9.8 miles (15.8 km) north-northeast of Manchester city centre, in the valley of the River Roch. Blackstone Edge, Saddleworth Moor and the South Pennines are close to the east, whilst on all other sides, Rochdale is bound by smaller towns, including Whitworth, Littleborough, Milnrow, Royton, Heywood and Shaw and Crompton, with little or no green space between them. Rochdale experiences a temperate maritime climate, like much of the British Isles, with relatively cool summers and mild winters.
Rochdale Town Hall is a Victorian era town hall widely recognised as being one of the finest municipal buildings in the country. The Grade I listed building is the ceremonial headquarters of Rochdale Metropolitan Borough Council and houses local government departments, including the borough's civil registration office. Built in the Gothic Revival style it was inaugurated on 27 September 1871. The architect, William Henry Crossland, won a competition held in 1864. The town hall had a 240-foot (73 m) clock tower topped by a wooden spire with a gilded statue of Saint George and the Dragon which were destroyed by fire on 10 April 1883. A new 191-foot (58 m) stone clock tower and spire in the style of Manchester Town Hall was designed by Alfred Waterhouse, and erected in 1888. Art critic Nikolaus Pevsner described the building as possessing a rare picturesque beauty. Its stained glass windows, some designed by William Morris, are credited as the finest modern examples of their kind. The building came to the attention of Adolf Hitler who was said to have admired it so much that he wished to ship the building, brick-by-brick, to Nazi Germany had the United Kingdom been defeated in the Second World War.
Rochdale Cenotaph, a war memorial bearing four sculpted and painted flags, is opposite the town hall. It commemorates those who died in conflicts since the First World War (1914–1918). The monument and surrounding gardens were designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. In Rochdale, is St John the Baptist Catholic Church. It was built in 1927 in Byzantine Revival style and is a Grade II listed building.
Public transport in Rochdale is co-ordinated by the Transport for Greater Manchester who own the bus station and coordinate transport services in the area. The idea for the Rochdale Canal emerged in 1776, when James Brindley was commissioned to survey possible routes between Sowerby Bridge and Manchester. Rochdale railway station is about a mile south of the town centre. Trains run to Manchester Victoria, Halifax, Dewsbury, Bradford and Leeds.

Places to see in ( Middleton - UK )
Middleton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England, on the River Irk 5 miles south-southwest of Rochdale and 4.4 miles north-northeast of Manchester city centre. In 2001, Middleton had a population of 45,580, reducing to 42,972 at the 2011 Census. It lies on the northern edge of Manchester, with Blackley to the south and Moston to the south east.
Historically part of Lancashire, Middleton's name comes from it being the centre of several circumjacent settlements. It was an ecclesiastical parish of the hundred of Salford, ruled by aristocratic families. The Church of St Leonard is a Grade I listed building. The Flodden Window in the church's sanctuary is thought to be the oldest war memorial in the United Kingdom, memorialising the archers of Middleton who fought at the Battle of Flodden in 1513.
In 1770, Middleton was a village of twenty houses, but in the 18th and 19th centuries it grew into a thriving and populous seat of textile manufacture and it was granted borough status in 1886.
Langley in the north of the town was one of Manchester City Council's overspill council estates, whilst Alkrington in the south is a suburban area.
Although unmentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, Middleton is said to be of great antiquity; a community at Middleton is thought to have evolved outwards from a church that existed considerably earlier than the Norman conquest of England. The name Middleton first appears in 1194, and derives from the Old English middel-tūn, meaning middle farm or settlement, probably a reference to its central position between Rochdale and Manchester.
During the Middle Ages, Middleton was a centre of domestic flannel and woollen cloth production. The development of Middleton as a centre of commerce occurred during the 17th and 18th centuries as a result of the effect of the Industrial Revolution. Additional to this, Lord Suffield obtained a Royal Charter from King George III in 1791 to hold a weekly market and three annual summer fairs in Middleton. Suffield built a market house, warehouses and shambles in the town at his own expense.
Middleton stands on undulated land immediately north of the Metropolitan Borough of Manchester; Chadderton and Royton are close to the east. The town of Rochdale lies to the north-northeast. The town is supposed to have derived its name, Middle-town, from its situation midway between Manchester and Rochdale. It is situated on an ancient road between those places. Middleton town centre is around 100 feet (30 m) above sea level.

The Vile Town of Rochdale
What would you like to know about Rochdale? The town of Rochdale is back in the news, this time, not for a very good reason. Yet, it’s a town with many sides. This town is a subject of vehement debates. While some believe that it’s living or has already lived down its reputation as one of the worst places to live, others are of the opinion it’s still one of the good places to live. Really, in spite of all the seeming progress the town has made, we can agree that Rochdale has nothing so good going for it. Thus, in this video, we want to discuss the vile town of Rochdale viewed in another light. Please, come along as we explore what living in Rochdale really means.
About Rochdale
Anyone living in England is generally no stranger to Rochdale. The ancient town steep in history has a prominent place in British annals. However, out of consideration for some of our viewers who may not know as much as others do about towns in England or cities in the UK, we would love to first tell you or remind you of certain things about Rochdale. We know some of you’re watching this video from outside Britain, in case there’s someone who needs to be told or reminded, let’s first do this.
Rochdale is a town in Greater Manchester that some people regard as a city. The town with a population of 111,261 according to the 2021 census is in the foothills of the South Pennines. It lies in the dale of the River Roch, 8 kilometres northwest of Oldham and 16 kilometres northeast of Manchester. Covering a total area of 57 square kilometres, it has a population density of 1,953 residents per square kilometre.
Rochdale is approximately 137 metres above sea level. Close to its east are Blackstone Edge, Saddleworth Moor, and the South Pennines. On all other sides, the town is bound by other towns, such as Whitworth, Littleborough, Milnrow, Royton, and Crompton, with almost no green space between them. Yet, there’s a lot of difference between having a pint of facts about a town or city and understanding what it means to live there. So let’s let you into living in Rochdale.
What to Know About Living in Rochdale
As you likely know, Rochdale has been ranked among the worst places in England and in the United Kingdom for jobs, pay, and skills. Of course, there are warnings that the north-south divide is still getting bigger in the town. Now, in the analysis by the Think-tank Centre for Cities which looked at the economies of the 64 largest urban areas in the UK over a decade, Rochdale is in the bottom 10 on a string of measures, such as wages, employment rates, job creation, skill levels, new homes, and population growth. It was found that 1 in 7 people in Rochdale has no qualifications.
However, the town centre regeneration programme is still in progress. This means that the most popular residential areas appear to be a little further out of town. The jewel in the crown is the village of Littleborough which sits about 8 kilometres northwest of Rochdale’s town centre though still remains part of the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale. There’s another much sought-after suburb of Bamford a couple of kilometres to the east of Rochdale’s heart. It is home to some of the area’s biggest and most desirable properties. Then comes the popular village of Norden in the northwest of the borough, on either side of the A680 which leads to Edenfield. It boasts good schools and a wide array of housing options.
Nevertheless, these aren’t enough reasons to convince you that the town has shed the crown of the worst place to live.

Bollington, Cheshire - Home of White Nancy and the Middlewood Way
Bollington in Cheshire was recently voted one of the best places to live in the North West of England. A beautiful village that's industrial past brings a modern charm to the area. Overlooked by White Nancy, Bollington is the gateway to the Peak District and many wonderful walks and hikes.
Bollington is sometimes called 'The Happy Valley' and is home to a thriving local community. If you're ever in the area, I highly recommend a bite to eat from one of the local food trucks and a walk along the Middlewood Way.
This short film showcases one of the loveliest villages in Cheshire. If you enjoyed this film then please subscribe to the channel -
