Clark's Hill/Norton State Historic Site
Walk in the footsteps of the Lewis and Clark Expedition at Clark’s Hill/Norton State Historic State. The explorers camped at the base of Clark’s Hill between June 1 and June 3, 1804, on their epic journey. William Clark climbed the hill on June 2 and saw a sweeping vista that included the confluence of the Missouri and Osage rivers. Today, a short trail takes visitors past two Indian mounds mentioned by Clark in his journals and to an overlook that shows where Clark stood more than 200 years ago.

Klondike Park, St Charles, MO - Park Travel Review
This is one of our favorite parks to spend time at within a 50-mile radius of our house. There is so much to see here and it is different every time we go. The quarry lake is lovely and the views of the Missouri River are ever changing. A great gem of the St Charles County, MO park system. Manhattan Project History Museums - Oak Ridge Tennessee
After watching the movie Oppenheimer, I was so intrigued to visit these historical locations in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
Oak Ridge, known as the secret city, is one of three secret cities that were built in secrecy to construct the world's first atomic bomb. (Along with Los Alamos, New Mexico and Hanford, Washington). In the movie Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, the majority of the effort was focused on Los Alamos, however Oak Ridge developed the enriched uranium to support the project.
Ed Westcott was the official photographer for the Manhattan Project. You can bet that you have seen his work if you have seen any historical images of Oppenheimer or any of the people and places associated with this project. Many of his images, now available in the public domain were used in the making of this video
I visit three historical museums associated with the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. I learned so much on this journey through time.
The first stop is the Manhattan Project National Historical Park that was established in 2015. It was a collaborative partnership between the National Park Service and the US Department of Energy. There are several historical sites in the area that comprises this park. For information about visiting the Manhattan Project National Historical Park see
The 2nd spot we visit is the American Museum of Science and Energy. This is an interactive museum that dives into the science that was developed as part of the Manhattan Project and takes you through a journey of all the practical applications using the nuclear science today. The Department of Energy hosts tours to their historic sites outside of town. 2024 tours have not yet been scheduled. The tours start at this museum and tickets can be purchased here:
Lastly we visit the Oak Ridge History Museum. I was shocked at the amount of memorabilia on display at this museum. In addition, this museum has the most information about the African American Experience during the Manhattan Project, to include a reconstructed Hutment. Ed Westcott's son-in-law currently volunteers at this museum- they have an incredible display of his work and a section dedicated to him as well, truly, an American Treasure. For more information on the Oak Ridge History Museum see
All historical photos used in this video were taken by Ed Westcott and are in the public domain unless otherwise noted.

We lived on a budget before we hit the road and we are even more budget conscious now. We're always looking for great adventure with a minimal price tag and Missouri state parks are FREE! We are keen on picking up a state parks pass to states we're visiting, especially if you plan on hitting several parks in that state because it will pay for itself in just a few trips.
We didn't get to visit all the areas we wanted to see, but we did see a great collection.
We highly suggest a tag along that hooks to an adult bike if you have younger kids. We picked ours up used, but we highly considered this one before we found ours.

Toddlers pose their own challenges and biking can create some. We LOVE this front mount seat for Graham. Make sure the kids aren't trying to nap in this one though! 😬 Want your own seat? You can find it here.

Meramec River
Video of St. Francois State Park, MO from April D.
April D.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Go-to Campsite
Saint Francois is a tent and rv campground just 1 hour south of saint louis, MO in Bonne Terre. It also along a river which allows swimming at your own risk because there is no real entrance site. But plenty of gravel bars. I personally enjoy this park and its sites. The rvs and tents are separated which i love. And the tent sites have plenty of room for 2-3 tents plus games. They provide individual showers, out houses every 6 sites, flat areas for tents, ice, wood, and activities. Trails, parks, and lots of fields to play in.The only downfalls are (1) entering the park. You enter on a dangerous highway where you need plenty of room and stopping to enter but there is none. Getting out is the worst especially if you have a trailor and move slow. There is no lane for you to pull out. Cars are fine. (2) the river is monopolized by 1 company for rafting/kayaking/canoing. You have to make an appointment, they only accept cash, and the websites dont show correct equipment. But it gets the job done.

Route 66 State Park - Trails in the Park - Park Travel Review
Route 66 State park was a perfect place for us to get a few miles in for the #Hike365Challenge last weekend. We were happy to be outside and fairly close to home. It was a nice, well marked trail. We even got to see some wild birds along the way. It was a fun day out to be together!
From the Park website: It is almost tragic the way local parks and their wonderful programs get overlooked by the people that live closest to them! We have visited The Historic Daniel Boone Home in Defiance, Missouri on many occasions. Sometime we go to support the event that they are holding, but often it is just to go and enjoy a bit of history and nature at the same time.
One such time was during June of 2017 when the flower gardens were blooming and the pollinators were going crazy for them!

Gary M.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Best place in Arkansas
Just about every sit is on the water...clearest water in the state. 45,000 acre lake I believe. It is a no brainer to make an effort to stay. Bring or rent boats within a 1/2 mile. Staying in Joplin next to Mountain Harbor Resort.... groceries. By the way... dry county so stock up.

Hawn State Park Campground Tour - Park Travel Review
Hawn State Park is one of our favorites in Missouri! This is a campground tour to show the campground an amenities for campers. Thank you for clicking on this video! Please subscribe if you enjoy exploring our parks and public lands. We enjoy hearing your comments so much! If you are interested in more Missouri State Parks, please take a look at this playlist:
The park’s campground, beneath a canopy of lofty pines, includes both basic and electric sites. Sites can be reserved March through November 1. The campground is open year-round. We camped here with our A frame camper on Memorial Day weekend 2019.
The park's web site says, The best way to experience the park is on its trails, which range from a short walk to an overlook area to an almost 10-mile-long backpacking trail that is considered one of the best in the state. We find that the easiest way to get to the trails early, is to be in the park already. It just makes for a better day of hiking for us.
