Back of the Yards is an industrial and residential neighborhood so named because it was near the former Union Stock Yards, which employed thousands of European immigrants in the early 20th century. Life in this neighborhood was explored in Upton Sinclair's 1906 novel The Jungle. The area was formerly part of the town of Lake until it was annexed by Chicago in 1889. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area was occupied largely by Eastern European immigrants and their descendants, who were predominantly ethnic Bohemian, Moravian, and Slovak. In the 1930s the activist Saul Alinsky did community organizing in this area, as its people suffered during the Great Depression. This work led to his founding the Industrial Areas Foundation in 1940, which trained community organizers. Jane Jacobs in her 1961 book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, cites the Back of the Yards as an area able to unslum in the 1960s, due to a beneficial set of circumstances. This included a stabilized community base with skilled members who were willing to trade work to upgrade housing, as well as active and well-led local social and political organizations. Jacobs often cited the Back of the Yards as a model for other depressed neighborhoods to follow to upgrade their communities. Some time after the 1970s, when the stockyard operations closed and the number of nearby jobs decreased, many people left to move to newer housing and work in the suburbs. The population of the neighborhood gradually reflected a new wave of settlement, predominantly Mexican-American.

Englewood is one of the 77 official community areas in Chicago, Illinois, United States. At its peak population in 1960, over 97,000 people lived in its approximately 3 square miles (7.8 km2),[2] but the neighborhood's population has since dropped dramatically. In 2000, it had a population of approximately 40,000 inhabitants, and the 2010 census indicated that its population has further declined to approximately 30,000.[3] Englewood is bordered by Garfield Boulevard to the north, 75th Street to the south, Racine Avenue to the west, and an irregular border that wends along the Metra Railroad Tracks to the east. On the west lies West Englewood, which is generally lumped in with Englewood by Chicagoans. It is located on the south side of Chicago. Englewood is also known as Chicago's murder capital, with more homicides being committed there than in any other neighborhood in the city. Almost daily shootings occur in Englewood, with an average of around 70 homicides per year.

Robbins is a village and a south suburb of Chicago in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,337 at the 2010 census, down from 6,635 in 2000. Tyrone Ward is the current mayor. Robbins is one of the oldest incorporated African American communities in the United States and the oldest black suburb in the Chicagoland area.

Alsip is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 19,277 at the 2010 census. It is a suburb of Chicago. Alsip was settled in the 1830s by German and Dutch farmers. The village is named after Frank Alsip, the owner of a brickyard that opened there in 1885.The village began to grow after the Tri-State Tollway was built there in 1959.

Lansing is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. Lansing is a south suburb of Chicago. The population was 28,331 at the 2010 census.

Love Valley 🤠 North Carolina’s Cowboy Capital

Love Valley is where a childhood dream became a reality…well pseudo-reality for Andy Barker. Andy dreamt of being a cowboy in the westerns so he built a small western town in the hills of North Carolina. This step back in time began with his purchase in 1954 and has flourished into today’s Cowboy Capital.

In 1970 it was even the “South’s Woodstock” with a music festival attracting 200,000 to this tiny dirt street. Why here? Andy’s 16-year-old daughter wanted to go to Woodstock, but he felt like she was too young so he asked her older brother Jet to organize a music festival there. He did. Complete with the Allman Brothers.

I guess this is truly a case of if you build it they will come.

Robbins Butte Wildlife Area, AZ_KLR650

The Robbins Butte Wildlife Area is about 40 miles SW of Phoenix and features a diverse habitat that draws large populations of resident and migratory wildlife to the area. The Gila River corridor forms the basis for the wildlife area and is surrounded by dense vegetation which provides the foundation for many nesting habitats. There are several miles of maintained dirt roads and trails authorized for recreational use. In the video I discuss much of the surrounding vegetation as well as the various species that inhabit the area.
