TOP 5 PLACES TO TRAVEL IN NICARAGUA | WHERE TO TRAVEL IN NICARAGUA?
Now, where to travel in Nicaragua? I have often been asked, where my favourite place to travel in Central America is and after having given it a lot of thought, I concluded it is Nicaragua. Now of course, currently in 2018, Nicaragua is going through some tough times, but tourism will return to Nicaragua and the doors will open to travel Nicaragua once again and when you do plan to visit Nicaragua, you can use this top 5 places to travel in Nicaragua video to outline my personal favourite places, cities and towns in Nicaragua.
Here we go through my favourite 5 places you should visit when travelling Nicaragua starting at #5 The Corn Islands. Off the coast of Nicaragua, Big and Little Corn Island are two paradisical chunks of sand completely surrounded by gorgeous water. Sit back and relax!
My 4th favourite place in Nicaragua is the fun beach party town of San Juan del Sur. A lot of people love San Juan as it is called in Nicaragua, and as much as I did enjoy it, I was not in Nicaragua to just party so I found San Juan del Sur fun, but there were other better places.
San Juan del Sur in Nicaragua:
The biggest surprise whilst travelling through Nicaragua was my third favourite place, Leon in the north of Nicaragua. A place I thought only existed on the tourist trail for Volcano Boarding, Leon is actually a very cool, and authentic city!

2nd best place in Nicaragua is Granada and Laguna de Apoyo. The town of Granada is gorgeous and colonial and right beside it is the volcano crater lake of Laguna de Apoyo, a pairing that is an absolute must visit when in Nicaragua.

The BEST Places in NIcaragua whilst travelling through, I found was ... ISLA OMETEPE. The island of Ometepe is a volcano island located in the enormous lake which covers a large area of Nicaragua and it is an unusual lost world that I simply loved. The video below shows us scootering around the island, one of the best days of my life.

Experience local Nicaragua by shopping at the local market in RIVAS NICARAGUA. The Rivas Market is a great day trip from San Juan del Sur, it's about a 30 min drive. The local market is bustling with vendors selling everything under sun! This is a great place to shop for groceries, housewares, electronics, souvenirs, etc. We recommend parking on a near by side street and walking into the market that spans several blocks.

My day exploring the city of Rivas continued with an epic visit to a local street market! Join me as I try authentic Nicaraguan street food at Rivas Central Market in Rivas, Nicaragua!
Rivas Central Market is an amazing, lively market where you’ll find tons of vendors, foods, and more. Right away, we came across a woman making fresh juice and selling gum-flavored ice cream in a bag, or helado en bolsa!
👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:
The ice cream was bright blue and tasted like bubblegum. But it was icier than ice cream, more like an ice pop. It was really tasty and refreshing on this hot, Nicaraguan morning, especially for just 5 cordobas!
Next, we passed vendors selling clothing, hats, shoes, and kitchenware. Then, I met a woman selling achiote, the spice mixture they use to marinate many types of meat in Nicaragua!
She also sold melons, lemons, pineapples, potatoes, chilies, bananas, broccoli, and even some strange-looking avocadoes. I tried a small chili pepper, which was so hot I had to run across the street to get some fresh orange juice in a bag!
I was dying from the chili pepper and the juice helped so much! Instead of drinking out of the straw, I bit a hole in the corner of the bag and chugged it! It cost 25 cordobas.
Next were vendors selling nail clippers, toothbrushes, combs, locks, and more. I even saw some vendors selling cool piggy panks, including a Minion, a penguin, and a rooster. They cost 200 cordobas total, or about $7 USD!
I had too much stuff, so I needed to buy some extra luggage. I found a suitcase for 1,250 cordobas/roughly $35 USD, but I was looking for second-hand luggage.
Next, we found a vendor selling tamales without meat. I bought 3 for 10 cordobas and then found vendors selling pork rinds, pork meat with fat, and even pork brains! I bought some pork brains and some sweet yotamales.
I posted up at a table in the market to eat. The tamale was okay by itself, but you’re supposed to eat it with the pork. The pork was nicely marinated and had a bit of spice. It went well with the tamale.
The yotamal, or sweet tamale, was soft, sweet, and crumbly. I liked it more than the other one. It was great with the tender, crispy pork!
Next, I drank some water out of a bag and then followed it with the brains. They also contained corn and was amazing! I loved eating it out of the bag. It was exotic, but good, but I got a bit of an ear, which had a lot of cartilage in it!
I loved it with the yotamal. Then, we continued exploring. I wanted to support the locals. We came across some sweets, vendors selling cheese, which was nice!
We jumped in a tuk-tuk and headed down the street, which is very busy and isn’t pedestrian friendly. There are cars, bikes, tuk-tuks, as well as pedestrians! Luckily, the police helped us get through quickly.
Our ride cost 40 cordobas, and then we saw someone selling the base for a sweet that wasn’t ready. Finally, we finished at the same place we started, at the lady with the bubblegum ice cream!

After arriving back in Rivas after an unforgettable 24 hours on the island of Ometepe, I continued my exploration with a food tour! Come with me as I go on a Nicaraguan breakfast street food tour of Rivas, Nicaragua!
My friend and guide Carlos and I started off at a vendor selling the Levanta Muerto soup, which they say raises you from the dead! It’s the kind of dish that would be an incredible hangover cure. But you should get there early, as the woman is there every day starting at 6 a.m.
👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:
I got a large cup of it. It was fantastic! I loved the seafood broth, and there was a lot of meat in there, too. I asked for more chilies to make it spicier. The cabbage in it was very nice. You can also get it with a tortilla and dunk it into the soup. Finally, I pulled out the lobster tail and ate it with the tortilla soaked in the broth. I loved it!
Then, I got some fresh orange juice from a vendor. I always prefer fresh juice over juice out of a bottle or a can. It’s pure when it’s fresh, and hasn’t been loaded down with sugar or preservatives. The pulp was fantastic!
Then, I got some instant coffee from another vendor for 10 cordobas. It was great! I like my coffee black. It’s not good coffee if it needs sugar and milk! What a way to start our day. We woke up at 4:15 a.m. to catch the ferry at 5:30, and it was now 7 a.m.!
We drove through the city to a place where they sell nacatamales, which they cook in a barrel over a fire. They wrap them in banana leaves and then aluminum foil. They’re essentially steamed corn stuffed with a nice amount of pork. They’re very similar to the tamales in Venezuela!
In the south of Nicaragua, they eat nacatamales with bread, and in the north, they eat them with tortillas. The bread was nice and fresh. I loved stuffing it into the tortillas like a little taco! I preferred it with the tortilla more, but both were good!
The pork was super flavorful. Then, they brought me a spicy chili, which I wrapped in the tortilla with the tamal. It was really hot! I enjoyed it with some Nicaraguan drip coffee. Everything cost 120 cordobas!
Then, we headed to a factory to see them make rosquillas. They had an oven with a blazing fire. The rosquillas are small cookies made of corn and cheese dough. They smelled so buttery as they baked! They take them out and bake them again to make them crispy.
Then, they put sugar on top. They were crunchy, sweet, toasted, and buttery! I liked them a lot. I tried a whole sheet of them. There were some salty ones, too! The originals are saltier, while the Sandals are sweeter. They can fit 12 huge pans in their oven!
The women work from 3 a.m. until 1 p.m. It was amazing to see the entire process! Then, before we left, we saw the torta de maiz, which they served to us along with the two types of rosquilla.
The torta de maiz was an incredible loaf of cornbread. It was some of the best cornbread of my life! I loved how sweet, fluffy, and crunchy it was! We also had pañalitas, spicy chili rosquillas, coffee, and the original salty rosquillas. They were great with the coffee, and a great way to end our morning!

Eating the NATIONAL DISH of NICARAGUA!! Gallo Pinto + Ferry Ride to Ometepe in Rivas, Nicaragua!!

With another adventure ahead of me in a new region of Nicaragua, I set off bright and early for Puerto San Jorge in Rivas, Nicaragua to begin my journey to Ometepe, a large island in Lake Nicaragua that’s home to twin volcanoes! Come with me as I have an amazing gallo pinto breakfast and ride the ferry to Ometepe, Nicaragua!
Ometepe is the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world! My guide Carlos from Visit Nicaragua and I would be taking our car on the ferry to Ometepe. The ride takes about 90 minutes, but you have to book your spot on the ferry in advance. But before we headed off to the island, we had to get breakfast!
👕 DAVID’S BEEN HERE MERCH:
We headed to El Jarolito, a traditional bar and restaurant at the port. There, we’d get some gallo pinto and eggs! I love the red beans in gallo pinto. The sunny-side up eggs and white cheese, with it would be fantastic!
I added the thick cream on top of the gallo pinto, which was fantastic. The white cheese was almost like manchego and was really dense. I loved the combination with the rice, red beans, cheese, cream, and eggs.
It was a simple breakfast, but so good! Then, I added the gallo pinto on top of some local bread with the cheese. It was an amazing gallo pinto sandwich. It’s the perfect thing to eat before a long day of work. At 290 cordobas/$8 USD, it was a nice, affordable breakfast.
Outside, we saw some street food vendors selling mangoes and nesperos. Then, along the water, there were some small huts that sell street food. And there were a lot of people enjoying the beach!
We saw a man building a hut, as well as another man selling snow cones and vendors selling quesillos! There was even a large, fake horse you could rake pictures on. The beach was amazing! I was the only tourist.
I went back to get some mango for the ferry ride. It cost 82.50 Cordobas to get a permit to take the car on the ferry, and another 700 to take the car, plus another 50 per person.
The ferry was really small and only fits maybe seven or eight cars. After a few cars and bikes on, it was super tight! We headed up to the deck to enjoy the views. They told me it would take about 70 minutes.
The breeze at the front of the ferry was amazing. Then, the captain let me take the wheel and drive for a bit!
Finally, we arrived at the island of Ometepe. I could see both of the island’s volcanoes as we arrived. I had 24 hours to explore the island, and I couldn’t wait to get started!

Rivas, Nicaragua Rivas is crossed by the Pan American Highway, 70 miles south of Managua and about 26 miles from the Costa Rican border, with a population of 29,000 and an average temperature of 80 degrees F. Rivas is east and next to Port San Jorge in Lake Nicaragua's shore which links the mainland with Ometepe Island. Rivas is an ideal place to serve as base to visit two of Nicaragua's best tourist attractions; Isla de Ometepe on Lake Nicaragua and San Juan del Sur and surrounding beaches on the Pacific Ocean shores.. You will enjoy visiting Rivas nice colonial center, central park, the colonial church, its market and if you want to spend the night a couple of good hotels and restaurants where good food and drinks at affordable prices are available. Public transportation differs from other cities of Nicaragua, horse carriages, tricycles and bicycles over 5,000 making it one of the least pollution contaminated of Nicaragua. If you plan to retire Rivas is a good option, great tourist attraction are within one hour, Managua, Granada and other cities are not so far, if you want to make exercise walk a couple of miles to San Jorge and Lake Nicaragua's shores.
