A Drive Around Rensselaer, NY

So many of the cities in the Northeast have their beginnings in the Colonial Period. The City of Rensselaer is such a city. I decided to do what I’ve done before, take a drive around the city to show others what it is like today and give a little history.

Albany and Rensselaer county were part of the Rensselaerwyck manor which was established in 1630. Dutch farmers settled the area in 1630 and called the area t'Greyn Bos (Greenbush), meaning pine trees. In 1686 the County of Albany was formed which included the area on both sides of the Hudson. [1]

Fort Crailo was a fortification built in 1707 on an estate called Greenbush. It was attacked by French and Native forces during the Seven Years’ War, but survived the assault. The property was inherited by Kiliean's grandson, Hendrick van Rensselaer who built the house. His son, Johannes, was a captain in the colonial militia inherited Crailo in 1740 gunports were likely added after a raiding party of 80 French and Indians attacked Greenbush, killing up to five persons in 1746. The people of Albany saw the assault across the Hudson, but troops weren’t able to cross the river. In 1751 and 1754 Captain van Rensselaer supplied candles and firewood to the colonial defense force at Albany and Schenectady [2]

In 1791 Rensselaer county was separated from Albany in the same year the Town of Rensselaerwyck was organized and in 1792 the named changed to the Town of Greenbush. [3] In 1855, the Town of Greenbush was broken into the towns of East and North Greenbush. [4] The Village of Greenbush within the town of Greenbush was incorporated in 1815. and in 1874 the hamlet of Bath was incorporated into the Village of Bath-on-the-Hudson. In 1897 the three contiguous villages of Greenbush, East Albany, and Bath-on-the-Hudson were combined into the City of Rensselaer. [5] In 1932 the Port of Rensselaer was built. This area has had industrial activity for over 350 years. Rensselaer has been one of the most important railroad centers on the continent. [6]

I hope you enjoyed this drive around the city. You were able to see a wide range of streets and housing; modern construction and those needing some TLC. It always amazes me how cities come together and like Rensselaer, from a few villages that grew together. Although no longer in its heyday, it is still a center of transportation with rail service (passenger & freight) connected to the entire US and also near interstates that run from Montreal to NYC and Buffalo to Boston. Thanks for coming along and if you haven’t subscribed yet please do and ring the bell so you know when the next video comes out. If you can, leave a comment and hit the like button. Have a good day!
