The Chapel of St. Xenia the Blessed
The Chapel of St. Xenia the Blessed is an active Orthodox chapel in St. Petersburg. Attributed to the Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God. The chapel is located at the Smolensk Cemetery on Vasilievsky Island. It is better to enter from the main entrance from Kamskaya Street. The nearest metro stations are Vasileostrovskaya and Primorskaya. In the chapel under the bushel (underground) are the relics of Blessed Xenia of St. Petersburg.
Xenia of St. Petersburg, who died at the end of the XVIII or early XIX century, was buried at the Smolensk cemetery. People who revered Blessed Xenia, dismantled the earth from her grave hill. The hill was filled up several times. Later, a stone slab was laid on the site of the hill, which was also dismantled by pebbles. In the third quarter of the XIX century, a small chapel was built on this site. In 1902, a large stone chapel in the Russian style was erected according to the project of architect A. A. Vseslavin. It was consecrated on October 12, 1902.
In September 1940, the chapel was closed together with the Smolensk Church. At the same time, it was decided to demolish the chapel, but it was later canceled. During the siege of Leningrad, there was a storage of containers of flammable liquids in the chapel. In those years, a large number of church values were lost.
In 1947, the chapel was opened and, after repairs, on February 1, 1947. It was consecrated by the rector of the Smolensk Church, Archpriest Vasily Rayevsky. On November 18, 1962, by the decision of the authorities, it was closed again and given over to a shoe repair shop, and then in 1980 to a sculpture workshop.
The chapel was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church only in 1983. After the restoration work, it was consecrated again on August 10, 1987 by Metropolitan Alexy of Leningrad and Novgorod (Ridiger).
In 2003, the gilded dome was restored above the chapel.
