05a - Parc d'Anja (Madagascar 2022)

This is part 5(a) of our trip to Madagascar (may 9 - june 26 2022).

Parc d'Anja lies at the entrance of Andringitra. This small parc is the home of many families of ringtail maki's.

We started our trip in busy Tana (Antananarivo) and visited the Kings palace and walked in the ricefields just outside town.
The roundtrip started (after a flight) in Tuliar in the south, where our driver/guide Nick waited for us. The south is very dry and the 'spiny forest' covers the landscape further south.
Next stop was Isalo, a parc that reminds you of the beautiful parcs of Utah (USA). On the way we stopped in Zombitse to see the beautiful Verraux sifaka.
Next stops were Andringitra, Ranamofana and Andringitra. From there we drove in 3 days to the spectaculair Tsingy de Bamaraha and returned to Tana.
After a flight to Diego Suarez Richard waited for us to be our guide in the north. The highlights there are Ankarana (tsingy), Red Tsingy and Montagne d'Ambre.
After returning to Tana again we visited the famous Andisabe and Mantadia parcs and after a long drive the Palmarium lodge in the Pangalanes (large channels parallel to the rough see).
Our trip ended under the palm trees of Ile St Marie.

The Zebu Market of Ambalavao, Madagascar

We drove for another couple of hours into an area that was much drier, with less vegetation and old rounded mountains. It was a very interesting looking area. Then we came to the city of Ambalavao where we pulled up to a restaurant to pre-order our lunch. Then we got back into the van and drove to the zebu market. This place was amazing. It is the second largest cattle market in the country. It is held every Wednesday and people come from miles around to buy and sell zebu. We parked on the outside of the market and Patrick told us to just walk in, watch out of the animals as they are unpredictable and get to a small brick wall. He said if we climb up that we could get a really good 360 degree view. It was amazing and chaotic. I took a mini movie and a few photos and then made my way back through the crowd.

Journey to Andavadoaka, Madagascar: Part 10

Traveling in Madagascar has a way of reminding you that you are not really in control. But is that necessarily a bad thing?

Madagascar Mountains & Mystery

Madagascar is home to some of the world's most unique flora and fauna including lemurs, chameleons, orchids and baobab trees. ParkTours first journeyed there in October 2012 and will visit there again in coming years. Our tour begins in the capital of Antananarivo. To the east in Andasibe, is our base for excursions into the lowland and mid-altitude rainforest of Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. We enjoy morning walks to spot lemurs, eastern Ring-tailed Mongoose, frogs and chameleons. Travelling through terraced farmlands, we arrive in Antsirabe, a highland town surrounded by volcanic lakes. After lakeside walks and visits to artisan workshops, we continue to Ranomafana National Park. This montane rainforest is home to lemurs, chameleons and almost half of Madagascar's bird species. For a contrast, Andringitra National Park is a walker's paradise with prairies and open grassland below lunar-like granite massifs. We walk in the canyons and riparian rainforests of Ranohira Isalo National Park, then, to the south, forests of spiny octopus trees contrast with ancient baobabs. At Ifaty and Anakao, we snorkel on coral reefs and visit Tsimanampesotse National Park which is famous for its Pink and Dwarf Flamingos, before we return to the capital.

Isalo National Park, Madagascar - Through Different Lenses

Isalo National Park in Madagascar is a scenic paradise. I overflew parts of it with a DJI Mavic Pro drone, and photographed it with a 1950s Rolleiflex camera, using both current color and expired black-and-white film. This is the result.

Madagascar / Isalo Park Day Hike

Mora mora... A long day hike in Isalo National Park, Makis Canyon, Namaza Trail, Blue Pool, Black Pool and wonderful wildlife - plants, reptiles, lemurs. On the sad side, vast deforestation and its outcome can be seen as well. Suggested day hikes itineraries in the following link:
