The town is where you’ll find his former home, Monticello. It’s a symbol of his design sense and his unfortunate connection to slavery. He also founded a university modeled after the Roman Pantheon. It’s got an impressive rotunda that brings in visitors and students from everywhere. It has two impressive museums nearby. The Fralin Museum has a variety of art, and the UVA has one of the only aboriginal art collections in the US.
Charlottesville also has the remains of James Monroe’s home. He was Thomas’ apprentice and the fifth president of the US. If you have children that want to learn a bit more, take them to the Discovery Museum. The exhibits are all catered to them, and they’ll have fun while they expand their mind.
Thomas loved wine and made sure that Charlottesville was a haven for wineries. He founded Jefferson Wineries, and Three Notche’d Brewing has a variety of brews inspired by history. Don’t forget to also try hard cider, the town’s other favorite drink.
Thomas was also a major foodie, and that’s part of why his hometown has so many delicious restaurants. The oldest, The Virginian, provides a twist on his beloved mac ‘n cheese. There’s also seafood at Public Oyster and treats at MarieBette Cafe and Bakery. Other Delicious restaurants sit within the Downtown Mall. It’s got stories and stories of everything you could want, including shops, galleries, and cinemas.
If you’d rather commune outside, Skyline Drive takes you around Shenandoah National Park. You can also sit in Greenbrier or Kemper Park.

HGTV Hometown Takeover - Pulaski's Submission
This small town is full of history and charm. The citizens are passionate, have a vision for the future and a desire for their community to succeed. HGTV Home Town Makeover will be a chapter in the story this community is rewriting about itself and become a part of our hometown history!
Conveniently located near I-81 with 2 exits, Pulaski is ideal for attracting visitors and new business ventures. US Route 11 runs through the Downtown area, providing a scenic drive for those wanting to explore rural America. Pulaski’s Downtown has a trail spur to the New River State Trail, bringing cyclists and hikers to Town from around the area. The Town sprang up at the coming of the railroad followed by the discovery and exploitation of coal in the nearby mountains. Later, commerce and industrialization brought residential developments for coal and factory workers that were tucked between upland Victorian mansions and the railroad and creek defining the downtown industrial areas.
Like many small communities, these core industrial employers began to face pressures from foreign competition resulting in closure, consolidation and/or movement of facilities to other areas. Many physical legacies of Pulaski’s rapid industrial growth remain scattered throughout the town in the form of abandoned and deteriorating sites that total almost 80 acres.
While Pulaski’s economic base has come under significant stress, having fallen victim to the loss of many of its primary, longstanding employers, there is a renaissance occurring. An entrepreneurial spirit has risen in Pulaski; Small businesses such as the Blue Ridge Fudge Lady, have opened and more are popping up regularly. While large industry has left, smaller businesses supporting industrial companies can be found in the town of Pulaski. Population numbers have been down in recent years, yet there are signs of young families and young professionals moving to Pulaski to take advantage of the lower cost of living and the charm of small-town living!
The MYSTERIOUS Disappearing LAKE | Passport America
Mountain Lake is an interesting place for many reasons. It’s a place of mystery, fame, and nature combined to create a beautiful mountain top lake and lodge for any to visit. The lake is one of only two natural lakes located in Virginia, the other being Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal Swamp. The lake is to be believed to have formed over 6,000 years ago from underground springs and rock slides creating dam like features to block water from draining down the mountain. Today the lake is used as a resort alongside the Mountain Lake Lodge providing as a hotel for visitors. The lodge now offers many activities from hiking to clay shooting and many more to provide guests with a great experience.

Hiking Buffalo Mountain in Floyd County, Virginia
A visit to Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve in southern Floyd County, Virginia on an extremely windy day in late February 2014. The short but steep Summit Trail takes you to the summit of Buffalo Mountain. The mountain, at 3971 feet above sea level, towers over the surrounding countryside and is much higher than nearby peaks. Rocky outcrops and cliffs at the wind swept summit allow for excellent 360 degree views. The high elevation and conditions at the summit allow for many rare plant and animal species, which are protected by the Preserve. The ecosystem of the higher elevations and summit area is more like Canada than what we expect to find in southern Virginia. This is a great place to visit in any season, considered by some publications to be one of Virginia's 10 best hikes...Smell N Roses agrees with that assessment, this is one of my favorite places in Virginia!!! Thanks for watching!
