10- Keller Interpretive Center at Abingdon Muster Grounds- a 9 acre complex that has interactive exhibits to help visitors understand what it was like in those parts during the American Revolutionary Period. It has artifacts that were used at the Battle of Kings Mountain.

We stumbled onto this historic little town because we saw there was a Farmer's Market going on as we were passing thru and we were able to check out several things while we were there and could have spent days exploring everything. Live Where You Love: The New River Valley

Welcome to the New River Valley! Nestled in beautiful southwest Virginia, The New River Valley comprises the counties of Montgomery (including the Towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg) Pulaski, Floyd, Giles and the City of Radford. With a population just under 200,000, the NRV has seen substantial growth over the last few decades and continues to be one of the fastest growing areas in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Town of Blacksburg serves as the New River Valley's hub. Consistently ranked among the country's best places to live, Blacksburg is also the home to Virginia Tech - Virginia's largest university and one of the nation's leading research institutions. From it's die-hard athletic fan base to it's growing Corporate Research Park, Virginia Tech's influence on the region is undeniable.

Residents of the New River Valley enjoy a range of cultural, sporting, and outdoor activities. On Saturdays in the Fall, over 60,000 college football fans descend on Lane Stadium to cheer on their beloved Hokies. If you are passionate for the outdoors, you can hike the Huckleberry Trail or enjoy miles of walking and biking trails in the surrounding Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. The New River, believed to be the second oldest river in the world, is ideal for boating, fishing, and swimming.

The New River Valley's growing technical community has helped to spur the region's economy. Ranked as having one of the Best Educated Technical Workforces, the New River Valley has seen an increase with both the research economy and entrepreneurial startups.

But even with it's growing tech community, the region still maintains a small town feel with historic Downtowns and a rich arts and culture scene that appeals to people looking for a slower pace of life.

U.S. Route 11 (US 11) is a key north-south highway stretching 1,645 miles from New Orleans, Louisiana, to the Canadian border at Rouses Point, New York. Established in 1926, the route retains much of its original path, passing through ten states and offering a scenic alternative to the faster interstates. It runs southwest to northeast, often paralleling I-81.

Louisiana: US 11 begins in the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge in New Orleans, crossing Lake Pontchartrain on the Maestri Bridge, built in 1928. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the bridge was the only eastern route into New Orleans. US 11 then parallels I-10 and I-59 before entering Mississippi.

Mississippi: In Mississippi, US 11 runs alongside I-59 through towns like Picayune, Poplarville, Hattiesburg, and Laurel. It serves as a vital regional route, providing access to local businesses, scenic areas, and historical sites. In Hattiesburg, US 11 passes the University of Southern Mississippi, and in Laurel, it moves through a historic downtown before crossing into Alabama at Meridian.

Alabama: US 11 parallels I-59 through Alabama, passing through Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Gadsden, and Fort Payne. In Tuscaloosa, the highway runs near the University of Alabama and in Birmingham, it passes through historic neighborhoods, offering a glimpse of the state's industrial past. The route crosses into Georgia after Fort Payne.

Georgia: The highway briefly enters Georgia, skirting the northwest corner near Lookout Mountain, with views of the Appalachian foothills before continuing into Tennessee.

Tennessee: In Tennessee, US 11 travels through Chattanooga, following I-75 to Knoxville, where it splits into US 11E and US 11W. US 11E runs northeast through Greeneville, Johnson City, and Bristol, while US 11W passes through Kingsport, meeting US 11E near the Virginia state line.

Virginia: In Virginia, US 11 runs through the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley, connecting towns like Abingdon, Wytheville, Roanoke, and Harrisonburg. The highway follows the Great Wagon Road, an important colonial route, and runs parallel to I-81 through scenic landscapes, historic towns, and Civil War sites.

West Virginia: Entering West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, US 11 travels through Ridgeway, Bunker Hill, Inwood, and Martinsburg. It runs parallel to I-81 and serves as a main road for these communities, offering a quieter alternative to the interstate.

Maryland: US 11 covers a short 12.83-mile stretch in Maryland, connecting Williamsport, Hagerstown, and Maugansville. It runs parallel to I-81, serving local communities and providing access to historical sites like the C&O Canal National Historical Park in Williamsport.

Pennsylvania: In Pennsylvania, US 11 enters near Greencastle, following I-81 through Chambersburg and Shippensburg. North of Carlisle, the highway passes the Miracle Mile, known for its traveler services. In Harrisburg, US 11 merges with US 15 and parallels the Susquehanna River, continuing through Danville, Bloomsburg, Wilkes-Barre, and Scranton before reaching New York.

New York: In New York, US 11 follows the Susquehanna River’s eastern edge from the Pennsylvania border to Binghamton, then continues through Cortland, Syracuse, Watertown, and Canton. The highway skirts the edge of the Adirondack Park, moving through rural landscapes before ending at the Canadian border in Rouses Point.

US 11 offers a unique travel experience, showcasing the history, culture, and natural beauty of the eastern United States. Unlike interstates, US 11 takes travelers directly through small towns and communities, preserving its original character while providing a scenic, slower-paced alternative to faster highways.

The MYSTERIOUS Disappearing LAKE | Passport America

Mountain Lake is an interesting place for many reasons. It’s a place of mystery, fame, and nature combined to create a beautiful mountain top lake and lodge for any to visit. The lake is one of only two natural lakes located in Virginia, the other being Lake Drummond in the Great Dismal Swamp. The lake is to be believed to have formed over 6,000 years ago from underground springs and rock slides creating dam like features to block water from draining down the mountain. Today the lake is used as a resort alongside the Mountain Lake Lodge providing as a hotel for visitors. The lodge now offers many activities from hiking to clay shooting and many more to provide guests with a great experience.

Hiking Buffalo Mountain in Floyd County, Virginia

A visit to Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve in southern Floyd County, Virginia on an extremely windy day in late February 2014. The short but steep Summit Trail takes you to the summit of Buffalo Mountain. The mountain, at 3971 feet above sea level, towers over the surrounding countryside and is much higher than nearby peaks. Rocky outcrops and cliffs at the wind swept summit allow for excellent 360 degree views. The high elevation and conditions at the summit allow for many rare plant and animal species, which are protected by the Preserve. The ecosystem of the higher elevations and summit area is more like Canada than what we expect to find in southern Virginia. This is a great place to visit in any season, considered by some publications to be one of Virginia's 10 best hikes...Smell N Roses agrees with that assessment, this is one of my favorite places in Virginia!!! Thanks for watching!
