Rabaul Papua New Guinea - Our Day with Rabaul Cruise Tours

Rabaul, Papua New Guinea was our second port of call on our recent PNG Encounter trip with P&O from Brisbane.

Like at Alotau, we booked our tour at Rabaul independently with Rabaul Cruise Tours (Ellis Wagarat), another well respected and highly rated local tour operator (link below and tour details available on our website).

This was another half day, morning tour because we were nervous about timings for the ship leaving. However, we had no need for concern as we were back at the ship at the time planned without any worries.

This was a fantastic tour, we got to see everything that was on the list and no additional charges for entry fees etc.

Watch the video to learn more about what our tour included.

Rabaul, Tourism is a major industry , New britain Island, Papua New guinea

Rabaul, Tourism is a major industry , New britain Island, Papua New guinea
Rabaul is a township in East New Britain province, on the island of New Britain, in the country of Papua New Guinea. New Britain is an island about 60 kilometres to the east of the island of New Guinea. Rabaul was the provincial capital and most important settlement in the province until it was destroyed in 1994 by falling ash of a volcanic eruption.
During the eruption, ash was sent thousands of metres into the air and the subsequent rain of ash caused 80% of the buildings in Rabaul to collapse. After the eruption the capital was moved to Kokopo, about 20 kilometres (12 mi) away. Rabaul is continually threatened by volcanic activity because it is on the edge of Rabaul caldera, a flooded caldera of a large pyroclastic shield.
Rabaul was planned and built around the harbor area known as Simpsonhafen (Simpson Harbour) during the German New Guinea administration which controlled the region between 1884 and formally through 1919. From 1910 Rabaul was the headquarters of German New Guinea until captured by the British Empire during the early days of World War I. It became the capital of the Australian mandated Territory of New Guinea until 1937 when it was first destroyed by a volcano.
During World War II it was captured by the Japanese in 1942, and it became the main base of Japanese military and naval activity in the South Pacific. Settlements and military installations around the edge of the caldera are often collectively called Rabaul, although the old town of Rabaul was reduced to practical insignificance by the volcanic eruption in 1937.
As a tourist destination, Rabaul is popular for its volcanoes, scuba diving and for snorkeling sites, spectacular harbour and other scenery, World War II history, flora and fauna, and the cultural life of the Tolai people. Before the 1994 eruption, Rabaul was a popular commercial and recreational boating destination; fewer private small craft visit now, but 10 to 12 cruise ships visit Rabaul each year, including the Queen Elizabeth carrying up to 2000 passengers. Tourism is a major industry in Rabaul and East New Britain generally.A strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake has struck off the cost of Papua New Guinea's New Britain island, the US Geological Survey (USGS) says.
Hazardous tsunami waves are forecast for some coastlines.
The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10km (six miles), around 162km from the town of Rabaul, on New Britain island.
It hit near the coast at around 07:25 on Friday (21:25 GMT on Thursday). There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
Dellie Minding, a receptionist at the Rabaul Hotel in the east of New Britain, told Reuters news agency the earthquake had been felt, with many guests running outside, but there had been no damage.
At the Rapopo Plantation Resort on the coast, receptionist May Dovon said she had not heard of any casualties or damage, the agency adds.
We felt the earthquake, everything was moving so we went out of the building, the receptionist told Reuters. Nothing was damaged.
The country is still recovering from a magnitude 7.5 quake on 26 February.
At least 100 people died in Enga province, where massive landslides buried whole villages.
It took weeks to establish the full extent of damage in the remote, worst-affected In 1983 and 1984 the town was ready for evacuation when the volcanoes started to heat up. Nothing happened until 19 September 1994, when again Tavurvur and Vulcan erupted, destroying the airport and covering most of the town with heavy ashfall. There were only 19 hours of warning, but thGe

Papua New Guinea has just taken first place for my top destination to see wild dolphins!

This entire day was surreal and completely magical! I was booked on a regular tour of the Duke of York Islands (as opposed to the specific dolphin trip at 6am), and the day started out strong when I looked down and saw dozens of giant starfish on the ocean floor!

Then, we set off for the small islands, and I wasn’t expecting it at all when our guides yelled “Dolphins”!!!

Up ahead were what seemed like over a hundred dolphins jumping and flipping in the air! Naturally, I immediately wanted to put on a mask and fins and dive in, but they told me to wait and watch how they “surf” at the front of the boat, so I sat at the bow instead.

What happened next are moments I will never ever forget! There were dolphins racing right under my feet, and occasionally would jump up into the air making me turn and gasp “Did you see that?!” every five seconds!

I could have sat there for hours watching them as we drove in circles amusing both the dolphins and myself. And that was only the beginning of this perfect day! ….to be continued!

But also — they have this cool contraption where you can basically lay on a rope ladder in the water at the front of the boat with your mask and snorkel on, and “swim” with the dolphins as they surf the front of the boat! I’ve always tried free diving to keep up with them but HAHA yeah right, and this is was way more efficient 😂 Footage of it on my Stories!

More info about how to do this trip with @pngtribalfoundation coming soon, and our potential group trip to Papua New Guinea in 2024!

Papua New Guinea’s top stereotypes part 1: “Aren’t they cannibals there?” 🙄

THE FACTS: Cannibalism existed in PNG amongst certain tribes IN THE PAST…along with neighboring countries like New Zealand and Fiji…yet no one fears those much sought-over destinations…

Why did cannibalism exist? From what I’ve gathered, if invaders intruded on a tribe’s customary land, they were killed and eaten, mostly as a warning to others not to do the same.

THE REAL: As part of my immersion experience with @pngtribalfoundation, they took me to a “Skull Cave” in a very remote area to see the piles of skulls from the last generation of cannibals.

Not going to lie, it was pretty freaky. Especially learning that they only kept the heads. And also that it only stopped 50-100 years ago.

BUT! Cannibalism is LONG GONE and the communities in the areas where it existed are very welcoming and kind. They are now benefiting from their ancestors’ terrifying cultural rituals through tourism, and it helps encourage them to keep the areas accessible!

So in short! Please go to PNG to learn about and SEE remnants of this cryptic cultural custom, but don’t judge the current and future generation based on the past!

PS if you missed my Stories, check my PNG highlight to see why I ended up having to trek through the jungle and into the caves barefoot.

Would you go into a skull cave? …what if I went with you? 😜

Group trip info coming soon!

The volcanic Rabaul Hot Springs as captured by my drone on the morning of Sunday, March 12, 2023.
The hot springs, located between Tavurvur (Matupit) and Rabalanakaia volcanoes, are red hot as they come out from the spectacular volcanic landscape.
The locals use the hot springs to quickly boil wild fowl eggs - a delicacy here.
Do not, however, get too close - lest you fall into the hot springs - or put your hands in to test the temperature.

A Quick Visit to Rabaul, Papua New Guinea Colorful Market

Finally, a chance to talk to the friendly locals. The Rabaul market is a market like any other with a few different fruits, vegetables and items to buy.

Unfortunately, Rabaul is not deemed safe to walk around after dark and our L'Austral cruise ship had established a curfew for passengers and crew. Sigh...
