Songkhla Old Town, Southern Thailand
*Video Description*
Hat Yai is the largest town in Songkhla province with lots of commerce and shopping, but little remains of the town's past. Songkhla, the provincial capital, is very different. There isn't as much commerce, but there are many government and education facilities. In addition, there is a genuine old town area in which many of the buildings have been restored to their former glory. Hat Yai has nothing like this and a trip to Songkhla old town makes for a very pleasant change. There has been a long running campaign by some local residents for Songkhla old town to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Songkhla also has a lot of history going back to the time before Thailand was the nation state as we know it now. It never had the same power as Ayuthaya, but at one stage it was a very important place, as was Nakhon Sri Thammarat just to the north.
In this video I'll show you around the old town as well as giving a basic overview of the history.

It's an area of Hat Yai I have known about for a long time but - as is the case with everywhere else in Thailand nowadays - it has changed a lot in the last couple of years. In the video I'll try to give you a historical perspective as well as looking at how it is now.
In the video I talk quite a lot about the commercial sex industry (probably too much) and the way that the industry has changed in recent years. I don't participate myself or encourage others to use the industry, but I would like my videos to be informative and to have a journalistic style.
