A Baroque masterpiece in Martina Franca is, for example, the Basilica di San Martino, built in 1747 three years after an earthquake. It is dedicated to the patron saint of the town, St. Martin, who can also be seen on the relief at the entrance (see large photo above). According to legend, San Martino saved Martina Franca from an invasion by Fabrizio Maramaldo in 1529. Maramaldo was a mercenary leader who had violated chivalric honor by killing the leader of the Florentine army, even though he was already a prisoner and wounded. The Italian word maramaldesco (ruthless, cunning) is derived from his name.
Martina Franca, or just Martina (Martinese: Marténe), is a town and municipality in the province of Taranto, Apulia, Italy. It is the second most populated town of the province after Taranto, and has a population (2016) of 49,086. Since 1975, the town has hosted the annual summer opera festival, the Festival della Valle d'Itria.

It is conceivable, in the absence of further evidence, that it prospered during the age of Magna Graecia, until it subsequently became a Roman municipium. The center decayed over the centuries. Around the year 1000 the territory of Putignano became the property of the Benedictine monks who resided in the Abbey of Santo Stefano di Monopoli. Since then small families of peasants began to live in the territory of Putignano in the service of the Benedictines. Over the years the population progressively increased, so that a small agricultural center was born, which developed over the centuries.

Putignano is a small town of just under 30,000 inhabitants, located in the Apulia region of Italy. It is located in the open country, 12km from Alberobello, 7km from Noci, and about 20km from Locorotondo, Monopoli or Polignano a Mare. On the map, the whole area is dotted with these white spots, and most of these towns contain a unique centro storico. Putignano is not to be outdone.
