North Dakota is one of those states that tends to get overlooked when you're planning your next summer vacation. In fact if you asked most people what they know about this state all they could probably tell you is that it's above South Dakota. That's about all I knew before we purposefully planned a trip there to take in some of the sights and sounds. So here are our top 5 things to do in North Dakota. This list is by no means exhaustive, we only barely scratched the surface of this great state. Let us know in the comments if we missed your favorite North Dakota attraction.

Poteau, Oklahoma
I was born in Poteau, Oklahoma and lived there until age 18 when I moved to Stillwater, OK to attend Oklahoma State University. In my youth Poteau had a population of about 5,000 people. Today is almost twice that number. Quite a few of my middle school/high school friends still live there. I enjoyed growing up there in the Choctaw Nation, had a lot of freedom to roam the countryside on our bicycles and later in automobiles. We did not dare do anything unacceptable because we knew someone would report to our parents! Southeastern OK is now promoted as Green Country (even most people in the state don't know how beautiful that part of Oklahoma is with national forests, rivers, lakes). I cherish much of my experience in the state but am glad I decided to leave and expand my awareness of the country and the world. This little video captures some of my memories. Enjoy!

The Descent of Cavanal Hill , Highest Hill in the World, Poteau Oklahoma
The Descent of Cavanal Hill , Highest Hill in the World, Poteau Oklahoma
Cavanal Hill is boasted as the world's highest hill at 1,999 ft above the surrounding terrain. Cavanal Hill derives its name from the French word meaning cave, and was a famous landmark for the French and American Indians over 150 years ago. Thomas Nuttal of Boston first became interested in this mountain in 1819 and spent time here studying plant life and talking to the American Indians and French trappers about the hill and all its natural wonders. He noted that the local Indians claimed to hear rumbling noises from deep within the caves.
Today, Cavanal Hill is the site of five mile runs, mountain bike races and the famous Cavanal Hill Killer 5-Mile Walk. Travel up four and a half miles of blacktopped road to the top and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Poteau River valley and surrounding areas. Enjoy gazing at the stars from atop the hill, enjoy a picnic under the newly remodeled pavilion, or have your photo taken by the famous Cavanal Hill Rock. On a clear day, visitors can see Mt. Magazine in Arkansas. Fun fact: the top of Cavanal is about 20º cooler in the summer than the valley below. From the north, take Hwy 59/271, then turn right onto Hughes Drive. Proceed to the next stop sign, then turn right onto Witteville Rd. Follow for 1.2 miles until you reach a Y in the road. Take it left to the top of the hill. Make the trek or drive the blacktopped road to the top and enjoy the phenomenal view of the Poteau River valley and surrounding area from several lookout points along the edge of route. From these points, you can see nearly two thirds of the county, as well as a wonderful view of Wister Lake, Sugar Loaf Mountain, the Poteau Mountains, and the Ouachita National Forest. We enjoyed this adventure up the highest hill. The cherokee trailhawk did a great job going up the steep hill. We are really enjoying it. More videos coming of our journey down the hill , what we saw at The Runestone park and our adventure along Poteau Mountain Overlook Road. We had a couple unfortunate problems this trip. Some times things don't go as planned.

▶︎ My favorite! This campground is one of my all time favorites!! It has everything you want in a campground and more. Hiking here is definitely the best, because the views are amazing!! The campground is always really well kept as well which I appreciate. The campsite spots themselves are pretty big in size and are separated by trees and bushes. Feels very private. They do have a quiet hour which is after 10pm. This is nice because there aren’t people partying all night long. There are tent spots and also RV. We camped, so I’m not sure if th RV spots are set up for electricity. The lake nearby is great. We brought our kayaks and had so much fun hitting the lake in the morning. It does get busy as the day goes on, especially in the summer on the weekends. Hiking is great, and there are multiple good spots nearby. Again, go early to beat the crowds! Dogs are welcome but must be on leash. Vaulted toilets on site and a place to fill up your water! Can’t wait to come back.

Poteau Maintian Overlook Scenic Drive, Heavener Oklahoma 11,299 acres featuring rock outcrops, scenic overlooks, streams, and seclude forest. The area between the two segments of Poteau Mountain Wilderness is managed as a special area very similar to wilderness, except motor vehicles are permitted.
Directions: From the junction of Arkansas Hwy. 80 and U.S. 71, go north on U.S. 71 for 6 miles, turn left (west) on Foresst Road 158 for 2 miles to the southern boundary. We started from Heavener Oklahoma after visiting The Rune Stone State Park. We entered into the forest on Poteau Mountian Road and turned onto Poteau Mountian Overlook Road. This, we took all the way to HWY 71 . The road was Pretty good the first half with fresh gravel. We did end up with a unpluggable hole in a rear tire. A sharp rock pierced it and left a cut to big to plug. Thankfully the trailhawk has a full size spare. We pulled into a camping area on the side of the road to change the tire. On this trip as we were at the Rune Stone Park, Ashley sprained her ankle. Every bump we hit caused her pain. I decided ,since she was hurting and I could no longer fix a hole in our tires. (I broke the T-Handle that inserts the plug.) That we would continue on home and not camp this trip as we had planned. After changing the tire I aired down more (20 psi).We continued towards HWY71. The road on this half was a lot rougher but very fun.( Ashley was a trooper) We did not have any more problems and made it home just fine. Ashleys ankle is still sore today but getting better. I had to buy a new tire as the original couldnt be saved. I plan on a 2 inch lift later on for the trailhawk and when this happens the next tires I am going to 6 ply BFG KO2S. The firestone destinations just are not as tough. We will be going back to explore this area and get some camping in. Sometimes things just dont go like you plan. We still had a great time and saw some cool things. After all we were on the top of the highest hill in the world. ( check out our Canaval Hill video.) Analia F.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Loved It Cedar Lake is an amazing place to take the whole family. We really enjoyed getting to swim in the water and do some fun water activities like kayaking! There are also some really great trails nearby that make staying here worth it. The views are spectacular. The campground was great, clean, and reasonably priced. We stayed 4 nights here, and did something different everyday. There really is something for everyone. We also rode our bikes along the lake and other trails. They have a really good shopping area about 10 miles away that have some good shops. There is also some restaurants in this area too. The campsites do have fire rings and a table. We cooked dinner one night over the fire, but ate food we brought and ate out some other nights. It’s nice that the campground is located close to other things. It was a little crowded when we went but I think that’s just how it is in the summer.

360VR | Walmart Supercenter | Poteau, Oklahoma
Walmart Inc. is an American multinational retail corporation that operates a chain of hypermarkets (also called supercenters), discount department stores, and grocery stores from the United States, headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas. The company was founded by Sam Walton in nearby Rogers, Arkansas in 1962 and incorporated under Delaware General Corporation Law on October 31, 1969. It also owns and operates Sam's Club retail warehouses. As of July 31, 2021, Walmart has 10,524 stores and clubs in 24 countries, operating under 48 different names. The company operates under the name Walmart in the United States and Canada, as Walmart de México y Centroamérica in Mexico and Central America, and as Flipkart Wholesale in India. It has wholly owned operations in Chile, Canada, and South Africa. Since August 2018, Walmart holds only a minority stake in Walmart Brasil, which was renamed Grupo Big in August 2019, with 20 percent of the company's shares, and private equity firm Advent International holding 80 percent ownership of the company.
Walmart is the world's largest company by revenue, with US$548.743 billion, according to the Fortune Global 500 list in 2020. It is also the largest private employer in the world with 2.2 million employees. It is a publicly traded family-owned business, as the company is controlled by the Walton family. Sam Walton's heirs own over 50 percent of Walmart through both their holding company Walton Enterprises and their individual holdings. Walmart was the largest United States grocery retailer in 2019, and 65 percent of Walmart's US$510.329 billion sales came from U.S. operations.
Walmart was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1972. By 1988, it was the most profitable retailer in the U.S., and it had become the largest in terms of revenue by October 1989. The company was originally geographically limited to the South and lower Midwest, but it had stores from coast to coast by the early 1990s. Sam's Club opened in New Jersey in November 1989, and the first California outlet opened in Lancaster, in July 1990. A Walmart in York, Pennsylvania, opened in October 1990, the first main store in the Northeast.
Walmart's investments outside the U.S. have seen mixed results. Its operations and subsidiaries in Canada, the United Kingdom, Central America, South America, and China are successful, but its ventures failed in Germany, Japan, and South Korea.
Poteau is a city in, and county seat of, Le Flore County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 8,520 as of the 2010 census.
In 1719, Bernard de la Harpe led a group of French explorers through this area and gave the river its present name. The present day city was founded in 1885, its name being derived from the nearby Poteau River. During the late 1700s, there was a large French outpost at Belle Point (Ft. Smith). From there, they would travel up the Poteau River to the base of Cavanal Mountain where a secondary post was established. Because of this, the river was named the Post River, or Poteau River, and the outpost was simply called the post, or Poteau. A group of French explorers gave the river its present name during the early 18th Century. Poteau is a French word meaning post.
The Poteau Chamber of Commerce has written that the community was founded in 1885 as a few houses and Bud Tate's general store. At the time of its founding, Poteau was located in Sugar Loaf County, a part of the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation. It was incorporated as a town in the Indian Territory by the federal government on October 8, 1898. The first stone public building, a school, was built in the same year.
The Fort Smith and Southern Railway built a rail line through the Poteau area in 1886–1887, en route to Paris, Texas, including a station within the city itself. The Poteau post office opened in 1887 and the Kansas City, Pittsburg and Gulf Railroad (acquired by the Kansas City Southern Railway in 1900) began serving the town in 1896.
In 1900, the Federal Court of Indian Territory was moved from Cameron, Oklahoma to Poteau. The Poteau News was first published in 1905. Other modern improvements during the run-up to statehood included: The Bank of Poteau in 1901 (which became a national bank in 1904), and the First Bank of Poteau in 1904. A telephone company franchise was granted in 1904, and an electric utility and waterworks system was begun in 1906.
After statehood, Governor Charles N. Haskell declared Poteau as a, ... city of the first class.
Magnetic Hill Oklahoma | Point of Interest in Southern Oklahoma | Upward Rolling Hill!!!
I went down near Springer Oklahoma and visited Magnetic Hill. It's an optical illusion that makes it look like your car or anything else travels uphill. It's a fun point of interest and only about 1.5 hours from OKC and a fun thing to do.
When I visited there were several other people around and a few others showed up later too. It's a fun little experiment and it a fun little thing to do. It's not very evident and you can kind of tell when you look closely and see its a little downhill. There are better hills elsewhere in the country but this one isn't bad. Happy travels!
