Travel Southwestern France: Albi, Toulouse and Biarritz
Join us on our trip to France where we travel to the cities of Albi, Toulouse, and Biarritz!
In Episode 9 of our Eurotrip 2020 series, we feature highlights of our trip around the southwestern region of France starting in the cities of Albi and Toulouse with their beautiful red brick architecture and UNESCO sites! We were honestly blown away from the charming streets in Albi and wish we had a bit more time to explore Toulouse.
We finished this segment of southwestern France with a visit to the seaside town of Biarritz! The architecture here was very different than the other towns / cities we have previously visited so far in France. The ocean views and beautiful gardens made this a standout on our trip to France!

- L'aloe vera, l'or vert des Canaries
- La piste aux étoiles
- El Hierro, la petite soeur écolo
- La fête religieuse d'El Hierro

Hyères (French Riviera / Côte d'Azur) - One Day in this Cute City Near Porquerolles
Hyères is the oldest seaside resort of the French Riviera and has kept a certain elegance and many assets! The city has indeed many Belle Époque villas as well as a medieval center which testify to a rich heritage. The city is one of the largest municipalities in France, its territory extends over 30 km from north to south and includes the beautiful island of Porquerolles (sometimes called the island of Hyères). Don't leave without visiting the Tour des Templiers as well as the Place Massillon and the Rue Portalet! For the more athletic, we recommend walking to the top of the hill and visiting the remains of the 13th century castle. You will definitely fall in love with Hyères!

map of French Southern and Antarctic Lands
The French Southern and Antarctic Lands[7] (French: Terres australes et antarctiques françaises, TAAF) is an Overseas Territory (French: Territoire d'outre-mer or TOM) of France. It consists of:
Adélie Land (Terre Adélie), the French claim on the continent of Antarctica.
Crozet Islands (Îles Crozet), a group in the southern Indian Ocean, south of Madagascar.
Kerguelen Islands (Archipel des Kerguelen), a group of volcanic islands in the southern Indian Ocean, southeast of Africa, approximately equidistant between Africa, Antarctica and Australia.
Saint Paul and Amsterdam Islands (Îles Saint Paul et Amsterdam), a group to the north of the Kerguelen Islands.
The Scattered Islands (Îles Éparses), a dispersed group of islands around the coast of Madagascar.
The territory is sometimes referred to as the French Southern Lands (French: Terres australes françaises) or the French Southern Territories,[8] usually to emphasize non-recognition of French sovereignty over Adélie Land as part of the Antarctic Treaty System.[6]
The entire territory has no permanently settled inhabitants. Approximately 150 (in the winter) to 310 (in the summer) persons are usually present in the French Southern and Antarctic Lands at any time, but they are mainly made up of military personnel, officials, scientific researchers and support staff
On July 5, 2019, the Crozet, Kerguelen, and Saint Paul and Amsterdam Islands were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the French Austral Lands and Seas because of their pristine wilderness, biodiversity, The territory includes Amsterdam Island, Saint Paul Island, the Crozet Islands, and the Kerguelen Islands in the southern Indian Ocean near 43°S, 67°E, along with Adélie Land, the sector of Antarctica claimed by France, named by the French explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville after his wife.
Adélie Land (about 432,000 km2 or 167,000 sq mi) and the islands, totaling 7,781 km2 (3,004 sq mi), have no indigenous inhabitants, though in 1997 there were about 100 researchers whose numbers varied from winter (July) to summer (January).
Amsterdam Island and Saint Paul Island are extinct volcanoes and have been delineated as the Amsterdam and Saint-Paul Islands temperate grasslands ecoregion. The highest point in the territory is Mont Ross on Kerguelen Island at 1,850 m (6,070 ft). There are very few airstrips on the islands, only existing on islands with weather stations, and the 1,232 km (766 mi) of coastline have no ports or harbors, only offshore anchorages.
Volcan du Diable on Grande Terre, Kerguelen
The islands in the Indian Ocean are supplied by the special ship Marion Dufresne sailing out of Le Port in Réunion Island. Terre Adélie is supplied by L'Astrolabe sailing out of Hobart in Tasmania.
However, the territory has a merchant marine fleet totaling (in 1999) 2,892,911 GRT/5,165,713 tonnes deadweight (DWT), including seven bulk carriers, five cargo ships, ten chemical tankers, nine container ships, six liquefied gas carriers, 24 petroleum tankers, one refrigerated cargo ship, and ten roll-on-roll-off (RORO) carriers. This fleet is maintained as a subset of the French register that allows French-owned ships to operate under more liberal taxation and manning regulations than permissible under the main French register. This register, however, is to vanish,[when?] replaced by the International French Register (Registre International Français, RIF).

Due to their isolation, the French islands in the southern Indian Ocean comprise one of the last remaining large wilderness areas on Earth.[13] Furthermore, the islands are positioned along the Antarctic Convergence, where upwelling creates nutrient-rich waters.[14] As a result, birds and marine mammals gather on the islands in great abundance. More than 50 million birds of 47 species breed on the islands, including more than half the breeding population of 16 different species.[13] The largest populations of king penguins and the endangered Indian yellow-nosed albatross on Earth are found on the Crozet Islands and Amsterdam Island, respectively.[14] Other threatened bird species with important populations on the islands include Eaton's pintail, MacGillivray's prion, and the Amsterdam albatross, which is one of four bird species endemic to the island group.[14] The French Southern Lands also hold the second largest population of southern elephant seals on Earth, numbering roughly 200,000, and the third largest population of the Antarctic fur seal.
Because of their isolation and subpolar location, the French Southern Lands are

FRANCE || Dordogne (or Périgord) - travel vlog (Laroque Gageac, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie) 15 Degrees North
15° North are travelling again! This time we are heading to France, to visit the beautifully rustic Dordogne. There, we visit: Laroque Gageac, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Les Jardins de Marqueyssac, Sarlat-la-Caneda, Bergerac, Monbazillac, La Madeleine, La Roque St Christophe, Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Beziers & Rocamadour.
Jérémy and Ben here again! We love to travel and to satisfy our wanderlust, we are on a European roadtrip exploring the best places for a city break on the continent. Transcript:
The Dordogne is an area of Southern France that, unsurprisingly, surrounds the Dordogne River. This is rustic and rural France at its finest and is an area adored by Brits – so much so that we French often joke that only the British actually go there. Which wasn’t true, because there were plenty of French enjoying a staycation there, because the shallow and slow-flowing river is perfect for hopping in a canoe and floating downstream. And high above, medieval castles sit on high vantage points, surveying the valleys below.
The Dordogne’s most famous spot is Laroque Gageac, which is where we start our tour of the region. A town built into the cliff, the picturesque village sits at the bottom of a ravine, with steep cliffs surrounding it. Historically, people lived in caves dug into the cliff, but now they live in houses nestled at the bottom.
Stay in your canoe long enough and you’ll end up in Beynac-et-Cazenac, which is a just a few miles downriver. Dominated by an imposing castle that sits on the hill, which dates back to at least the twelfth century, the winding steep streets lead up the hill to the grand chateau, which has survived to the present day almost entirely intact.
On the hill between these two towns is one of the most stunning gardens you’ll ever visit. Surrounding the fairly average Chateau de Marqueyssac are its absolutely remarkable gardens. Though the chateau dates back to the seventeenth century, it was in 1860s that its owner, Julien de Cervel, began his aspiration to transform the grounds into an Italianate garden. He planted thousands of boxwood trees in unusual formations and took to them with some garden shears. Today, there are 150,000 of the trees in the garden, all carefully trimmed and arranged in the most striking and extensive collection of topiary in the world. His intention was that the shrubs resemble the backs of a grazing flock of sheep.
Now we’re using the term “Dordogne” fairly loosely here to describe this region of France. Really, the Dordogne is just one department – of which there are ninety-six on mainland France.
Sarlat-la-Caneda is a town known for its markets, where they sell all the local delicacies, including foie-gras, the region’s most famous product. Market days are regular, but there is also the permanent market in the Church of Sainte-Marie, which was recently restored to combine contemporary elements, including a glass panoramic lift and the biggest iron doors I’ve ever seen.
Bergerac is a quaint town with plenty of nods to its most famous resident Cyrano de Bergerac. Except he didn’t actually live there because he’s a fictional character.
The Dordogne is one of France’s biggest wine-producing regions, so no trip to the area would be complete without a trip to a vineyard. The most famous is, of course, Monbazillac. Which also has a chateau.
Something else that makes the region famous is its enormous quantity of troglodyte dwellings. While nobody actually lives in them anymore, these networks of caves have been inhabited for thousands of years in some way or another.
In fact, some of the oldest cave paintings in the world have been found in the region and the Valley of the Vezere River is renowned worldwide as a Neolithic hotspot. There are so many caves that choosing which to see is actually quite difficult, because there are so many. Lascaux are the most famous, but nowadays you can only see a replica of the original paintings, so we decided that we actually wanted to see something real and authentic and headed to the ones above ground, built into the cliffs.
We visited the troglodyte villages of La Madeleine and La Roque St Christophe on the same day as they’re only a couple of miles apart.
