When my trip to Papua New Guinea was approved to happen, I honestly had no idea what to expect.
The first things that came to mind were tribes painted and dressed in traditional wear, and climbing through thick jungles. Since I was there as an ambassador to an NGO, I also expected to be mostly in meetings. I subconsciously hoped there would be some nice beaches, but since I hadn’t seen much posted about that, I didn’t think much about it.
Then, after meeting with the team members at @pngtribalfoundation, and hearing how they’re helping others, and what kind of help I could do as an influencer, I was taken to Duke of York Islands, where my mind was absolutely blown, and my mission became clear!
Imagine me not knowing an island-hopping tour was planned, complete with an unexpected visit from a hundred dolphins!!
I remember thinking “THIS is what people need to see and think of when they hear ‘Papua New Guinea’, not ‘It’s Dangerous’”. And so here we are 🙂
Every country has danger and safety issues. You all probably know this already, but I’m more scared to be in USA than the majority of countries I go to, including PNG. So let’s stop associating Papua New Guinea with danger, and start to highlight its incredible beauty as well, shall we?
What countries have you visited that everyone said was dangerous and turned out to be incredible?
Also, fun fact! If you look closely, the kids where I was cliff jumping have mostly blond hair, and that is a common gene in this area of PNG! They also looked very concerned after I jumped since there was only a small clearing amongst the coral (prob the most “danger” I had the whole trip 🙈😂)
For difficult logistical purposes, I still only recommend going to PNG with an established company like PNG Tribal Foundation. More info on my blog!

The Skeleton Tribe of Papua New Guinea lives in the heart of the Chimbu region not too far from Mount Hagen. Their significant and distinctive cultural practice is their marvelous body painting. The Skeleton Tribe is renowned to adorn their bodies like skeletons during ceremonial occasions and this has to do with a legend this tribe believes in. I will tap more into it in the next posts about these unique people! 🙌🏽 Their beliefs are deeply rooted in nature and ancestral spirits as well as the interconnectedness of all living things. They celebrate a variety of festivals throughout the year, each marked by colorful festivities and communal gatherings. When I visited Papua New Guinea they performed for us, it was not an official ceremony we attended. Nevertheless it was an amazing travel experience and memory! ❤️🇵🇬 #travel #peopleareawesome #beautifuldestinations

Papua New Guinea’s top stereotypes part 1: “Aren’t they cannibals there?” 🙄
THE FACTS: Cannibalism existed in PNG amongst certain tribes IN THE PAST…along with neighboring countries like New Zealand and Fiji…yet no one fears those much sought-over destinations…
Why did cannibalism exist? From what I’ve gathered, if invaders intruded on a tribe’s customary land, they were killed and eaten, mostly as a warning to others not to do the same.
THE REAL: As part of my immersion experience with @pngtribalfoundation, they took me to a “Skull Cave” in a very remote area to see the piles of skulls from the last generation of cannibals.
Not going to lie, it was pretty freaky. Especially learning that they only kept the heads. And also that it only stopped 50-100 years ago.
BUT! Cannibalism is LONG GONE and the communities in the areas where it existed are very welcoming and kind. They are now benefiting from their ancestors’ terrifying cultural rituals through tourism, and it helps encourage them to keep the areas accessible!
So in short! Please go to PNG to learn about and SEE remnants of this cryptic cultural custom, but don’t judge the current and future generation based on the past!
PS if you missed my Stories, check my PNG highlight to see why I ended up having to trek through the jungle and into the caves barefoot.
Would you go into a skull cave? …what if I went with you? 😜
Group trip info coming soon!

Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea has a bad stereotype of being “So dangerous” and a “terrible city”
Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea has a bad stereotype of being “So dangerous” and a “terrible city” 🙄
I’d love to know if the people who said that have ever even been there, or if they have, what they decided to do, because I was there and I definitely didn’t find it dangerous, in fact, I found it pretty similar to many cities I see on my travels!
In fact, I was actually very pleasantly surprised to find the fabulous aspects of Port Moresby!
I didn’t ignore the many danger concerns, I just acted as the smart, positive, and open minded traveler that I am, and booked nice hotels in recommended areas, and did things that both expats and locals recommended…not someone who went for a couple days to say they went to PNG and had no idea what to do so found it scary.
I must emphasize on the fact that I felt safe bc of where I stayed and the particular things I did. I did not walk around alone at night or venture off into areas I wasn’t recommended. Some may claim that’s not being adventurous but idgaf because I was safe and I had a great time!
If you travel to Papua New Guinea, staying in Port Moresby is usually necessary as it is the hub to get anywhere else (other areas are all only accessible by plane).
Check out my full Ultimate Papua New Guinea Travel Guide for my safe and fab Port Moresby recommendations, and also my new long post about the safety concerns and current dangers in PNG. (Link in bio)
Also big shout out to the wonderful people in Port Moresby and all of PNG! You are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people I have encountered on my many travels! 🙏💖
Have you heard anything about Port Moresby? Does negative media coverage keep you from going certain places?
