Azores Hot Springs: The Best to Visit on Sao Miguel
Driving around São Miguel Island, you’ll see different signs of volcanic activity.
In some areas, steam literally vents from the ground next to the road.
Volcanic activity beneath the surface heats the ground water, creating the famous hot springs on the island.

Poca da Dona Beija is probably the most touristy, and the most crowded. It's open late-night, too!
You’ll find five hot spring pools here in the bustling town of Furnas.
The cost is 8 Euros for adults, and there are extra fees for lockers and towels.
Poca da Dona Beija is open late, with final entry at 10. In fact, the hot springs are often busiest after dark, with a line at the entrance gate.
The water in four of the polls is 102 degrees Fahrenheit. In the cooler pool, it’s 83 degrees.
While Poca da Dona Beija is kind of a crowded, communal bath, the constant flow of the water cleans the pool naturally.
Terra Nostra is another popular hot spring, located in Furnas.
Its famous thermal bath is orange, from the mineral-rich water.
It’s about 99 degrees Fahrenheit, and the cost is 10 Euros to get in.
People staying at the hotel on-site have far more access than the visiting public.
Open swim is only until 4:30 for the public, but you can swim in the hot spring well after dark if you have a room at the hotel.
At Caldeira Velha at a higher elevation, you'll find three pools and a waterfall. You'll have to book tickets to this Natural Monument the day before your visit. They’re 10 Euros each.
Each person gets 90 minutes.
You’ll see boiling mud off to the side, and another pool of boiling water, which is too hot for people.
The hot spring pools you can swim in are around 99 degrees.
At the far end of the trail through the park, you’ll find a pretty waterfall. The water here is much cooler.
The most 'natural' of the Azores hot springs is on the west coast of São Miguel.
It’s a volcanic rock pool, adjacent to the ocean.
You’ll feel the hot water coming from below the earth, mixing with waves of cold seawater.
It’s best to come here at low tide, so the waves don’t knock you around and into the jagged rocks.
The hot springs in the Azores can be visited year-round, and are also great to visit on rainy days, when crowds are smaller.

Polla si trova a nord del Vallo di Diano, a circa 10 km da Sala Consilina e a 80 da Salerno, sulle rive del fiume Tanagro ed a ridosso dei monti Alburni. Da Pertosa dista circa 7 km, mentre ne dista 5 dalle omonime grotte, il cui percorso si snoda nel sottosuolo dei comuni di Auletta e della stessa Polla, con un probabile sbocco, il cui percorso è coperta da sedimenti, alla cosiddetta Grotta di Polla; sul versante collinare. Il comune, che conta un quartiere distaccato (San Pietro) sulla strada statale 19, è il maggior centro dell'area in cui si trova, secondo per popolazione solo a Sala Consilina.

Pollina is part of the wonderful Madione Park which is preserved by the International Slow Food Organisation. Pollina includes the tiny village of Finale. The violent 1993 earthquake completely destroyed this charming village, and so the villagers moved to Finale where they rebuilt the main downtown centre of the village. Thanks to its location in the Madonie Park and its extended Ash forests, this tiny village is well known for the production of the Manna, the sap extracted from the Ash trees, which is then preserved by the International Slow Food Organisation. The most important monuments are:The Church of SS. Giovanni and Paolo includes impressive works of art dating back to the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; The Tower of Maurolico built in the 16th century, it was used as astronomical observatory by the Sicilian astronomer Francesco Maurolico; The Theatre of Pietra Rosa built in 1979 by the Sicilian architect A. Foscari; The Finale Tower was a Spanish watchtower built in 1597. Here it is possible to enjoy a beautiful view of Cefalù, Capo d’Orlando and Aeolian Island.
Pollina, in the province of Palermo, rises 750 metres above sea level.On the northern slope of the Madonie mountains and only 94 km from the provincial capital, it has about three thousand inhabitants in winter, but increases exponentially in summer, when holidaymakers come to settle in the village to enjoy the sea and the mountains at the same time.Pollina also includes the hamlet of Finale, which was built around watchtowers that served to warn of possible dangers.HistorySome sources speak of Pollina as a descendant of the Greek city of Apollonia, dedicated to the God of light of poetry and divination, however, documents or historiographical finds supporting this thesis are completely absent.Another tradition has it that Pollina was founded as a gesture of love when Donna Pollina, a Norman princess, fell in love with the Arab Ayub. Their love was unfortunately bitterly opposed by their own families, forcing them to flee from place to place, in search of a suitable yet safe place to live out their love affair. They built an imposing and impregnable castle in the village with this hope.To be honest, the only certain sources that we possess to date refer to the Hellenistic period, and more specifically to 1082, when the village is mentioned as the property of the Diocese of Troina il Casale di Polla. Later this was ceded to that of Cefalù and then to the Ventimiglia family, in 1321.
