Pocklington is a small market town and civil parish situated at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is located 13 miles (21 km) east of York and 26 miles (42 km) north-west of Hull. The town's skyline is dominated by the 15th century tower of All Saints' Church. Pocklington lies at the centre of the ecclesiastical Parish of Pocklington, which also encompasses the small hamlet of Kilnwick Percy as well as a scattering of outlying farms and houses.
Pocklington gets its name via the Old English Poclintun from the Anglian settlement of Pocel's (or Pocela's) people and the Old English word tun meaning farm or settlement, but though the town's name can only be traced back to around 650 AD, the inhabitation of Pocklington as a site is thought to extend back a further 1,000 years or more to the Bronze Age. Pocklington appears on the 14th century Gough Map, the oldest route map in Great Britain. In the Iron Age Pocklington was a major town of the Parisi tribe and by the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 it was the second largest settlement in Yorkshire after York itself.
Pocklington developed through the Middle Ages while many similar places fell into dramatic decline. Pocklington owed much of its prosperity in the Middle Ages to the fact that it was a local centre for the trading of wool and lay on the main road to York, an important national centre for the export of wool to the continent. Wool was England’s principal export in the earlier Middle Ages. The town's coat of arms shield is based on that of the Dolman family, founders of Pocklington School. The arms were granted to the town council in 1980. The crown at the base of the shield is the emblem of the saints, along with the gold cross, symbolises the town's historic connection with Paulinus of York and the Archbishop of York.
Pocklington is a spring line settlement, located at the base of the Yorkshire Wolds. Geologically speaking, the rocks underlying this area were lain down under tropical oceans, and, when the land rose, the chalk wolds were formed from the skeletons and shells covering the sea floor. The landscape around Pocklington therefore varies from flat arable land primarily devoted to agriculture to the south and west, and grassy, chalk hills and dry valleys to the north and east. A lot of the more level farming country was, from the Middle Ages onwards, reclaimed from marshland.
Near the centre of Pocklington is Burnby Hall Gardens. These gardens are home to the National Collection of Hardy Water Lilies - the biggest such collection to be found in a natural setting in Europe. The Burnby Hall Gardens collection of water lilies has been designated as a National Collection by the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens.
Day trippers also visit Millington Wood (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) and Pocklington Canal Head, with footpaths along the canal. The canal has been named one of the top ten places to see aquatic wildlife in Britain. Nearby Allerthorpe Lakeland Park has parkland for walking, a lake with watersports facilities, a separate lake for fly fishing, and a BMX trail. There is also a large caravan park for visitors.
Pocklington lies on the A1079 road, the main arterial route between the cities of York and Hull. Pocklington is served by a number of bus routes provided by East Yorkshire Motor Services.
Pocklington Airfield has three concrete and tarmac runways of 1,600 yards (1,500 m), sufficient in length to take RAF bombers during the Second World War, but in September 1946 the airfield was closed. Pocklington was once part of the rail network, with a railway station dating back to 1847. This was closed as a result of the Beeching Report in November 1965.

HAYTON: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #80 of 172
EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARSIH #80: HAYTON
Hayton is situated approximately 2 miles away from Pocklington and 4 and half miles northwest of Market Weighton in the East Riding of Yorkshire
The village is just off the A1079 – the former Roman road from Brough to York, at the foot of the East Yorkshire Wolds escarpment.
Hayton was once an outlying estate or berewick of Pocklington. It’s one of two villages in the parish – the other being Burnby.
There’s also a small hamlet with a Roman connection - Thorpe le Street. Although the civil parish’s name is officially Hayton its parish council is styled Hayton and Burnby Parish Council.
In 1935 Burnby and Thorpe le Street parish was abolished and merged with Hayton. This is another one which has very sparse information about it out there, for both Burnby and Hayton.
That said, I think I’ve found some good bits. There are two churches – one in each village, there’s an equestrian centre, a shop and a petrol station, and a popular pub, hotel and restaurant
Hayton’s best feature though would undoubtedly be its countryside. You’re surrounded here by beautiful rolling hills to the East and by a flat open valley to the West. Its not to be sniffed at,

Driffield, also known as Great Driffield, is a market town and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. The civil parish is formed by the town of Driffield and the village of Little Driffield.
By road, Driffield is located 70.4 miles (113.3 km) to the north-east of Sheffield, 52.8 miles (85.0 km) to the east of Leeds, 29.4 miles (47.3 km) to the east of York, 22.8 miles (36.7 km) to the north of Hull, 72.0 miles (115.9 km) south-west of Middlesbrough & 218.3 miles (351.3 km) to the north of London.
Driffield lies in the Yorkshire Wolds, on the Driffield Navigation (canal), and near the source of the River Hull. Driffield lies on the A614, A166 and B1249, and on the Yorkshire Coast rail line from Scarborough to Hull. It is situated next to Little Driffield, where King Aldfrith of Northumbria was reputedly buried, and is also very close to Nafferton, Hutton Cranswick and Wansford. Driffield is named the Capital of the Wolds, mainly through virtue of its favourable location between Bridlington, Beverley and York. The town is served by Driffield railway station on the Yorkshire Coast Line.
Driffield contains a small community hospital, small fire station, police and ambulance stations, several churches - the largest being All Saints' Parish Church, whose bells were restored for the millennium - and a fairly small high street. There is also an area of parkland close to the parish church alongside the stream (Driffield Beck) that runs roughly parallel to the high street.
The town is home to Driffield Show, the country's largest one-day annual agricultural show, as well as the Driffield Steam and Vintage Rally - an event showcasing historical vehicles including traction engines, fairground organs, tractors and vintage cars. A particular focus is placed upon agricultural history, with demonstrations of ploughing and threshing often taking place. The rally is particularly known for the Saturday evening road-run of the steam engines and other vehicles into Driffield town centre, an event which invariably attracts large crowds of spectators.

In the Iron Age Pocklington was a major town of the Parisi tribe. In 2017, a Celtic warrior's grave, dated to about BC 320 to 174, was discovered at a housing development under construction. After archeologists had completed a very long excavation project, the site was found to include a bronze shield, remains of a chariot and the skeletons of ponies. The shield's boss bears a resemblance to the Wandsworth shield boss (circa BC 350 to 150), in the British Museum. One design element on the extremely well preserved Pocklington shield, a scalloped border, is not comparable to any other Iron Age finds across Europe, adding to its valuable uniqueness, commented Paula Ware, managing director at MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd, in late 2019.Horses were rarely included in Iron Age burials, making the find particularly significant. The discoveries are set to widen our understanding of the Arras (Middle Iron Age) culture and the dating of artefacts to secure contexts is exceptional, according to Paula Ware.

Pocklington’s unique Gardens have justifiably been called “a jewel in Yorkshire’s crown” and are home to a National Collection of over eighty varieties of Hardy Water Lilies which bloom on the Upper and Lower Lakes between June and August. Events include an annual Tulip Festival, Sunday brass band concerts, and children’s events held throughout the spring and summer. The Stewart Museum houses artefacts collected by Major Percy Stewart, an adventurer and traveller, who owned Burnby Hall and made eight world tours between 1906 and 1926

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #83: MILLINGTON
Welcome to a foggy Millington, a small village on the East Yorkshire Wolds which is situated approximately two miles Northeast of Pocklington
It lies on a part of the Wolds known as the High Wolds, a term used to describe the highest area in terms of elevation. We’re not at the summit here but we’re not far away
There are any number of local trails and walks over these beautiful dales, including The Yorkshire Wolds Way, and the Minster Way, both of which we’re very accustomed to seeing by now
Millington is an extremely popular place for cyclists and ramblers – and both of those groups of people are catered for in various ways in this village.
The village is famed for a Morris Dance, known as Tom’s Heyman, a local tradition dating back to 1995. It takes place on Yorkshire Day every year outside the one and only pub – The Gait Inn.
Millington’s parish boundaries also extend quite a way to the North, and they take in another small hamlet that features a second church, and a very interesting wooded dale
The fog may have obscured some of this, but the Yorkshire Wolds look beautiful in any weather – and the best part about that is there’s still lots more of them to see

FOGGATHORPE: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #34 of 172
Here’s a village with it’s very own alphabet! You’ll find it on the side of the old red phone box…and it’s pretty amazing! There are about 35 houses in the centre of the village. There’s a public house called the Black Swan, and some interesting features along its two main roads – Station Road and the A163 main road.
It has a former Wesleyan chapel built in 1803 which was also used as a school for 41 children. By 1892 it was described as a township containing 1,320 acres of land lying on the bank of the Foulness river. As alluded to on the alphabet, the village was called Fulcathorpe. At one point, the village belonged to the Aikroyd family, one of whom was buried in the chancel of Bubwith church in 1673. The Aikroyds' old mansion was taken down in 1743
It had its own railway station from 1853 on the Selby to Driffield Line – the same line as we’ve seen before back in Bubwith. The site of the dismantled railway track runs to the south of the village. The nearest train service is now about ten minutes' drive away at Howden station.
It also includes three smaller settlements, a company called KB Packaging established since 1983, and with 35 years experience in the polystyrene industry and there’s a milestone here making this one stick out. It’s a Grade II listed structure, stating Selby is 10 miles away, whilst Weighton, 8 miles away is abbreviated
Little would you know too that through one of the other settlements, you can connect this parish to the settlers on the Mayflower. Welcome to FOGGATHORPE.

POLLINGTON: East Riding of Yorkshire Parish #5 of 172
Welcome back to the East Riding of Yorkshire! Today we're still in the Goole area but this time we're on the other side of town. In fact, this time we are as far to the South West as the East Riding of Yorkshire will allow us, bordering the District of Selby.
This parish has quite a lot to offer. First of all, it's modest population of 966 belies how important the place is when it comes to transportation. For decades, frieght barges have relied on the lock here to get them from Knottingley to Goole, with cargo that would fill 13 lorries. One of the largest locks on the British Waterways can be found here.
In the main village you cannot miss the huge playing field and village hall right in the centre, the small parish room located at the village's West end, which really doesn't look like it holds 24 people, and don't forget the fields of sheep - something that surprised me a little here.
There's a guest house opposite an immaculate cricket pitch, as well as a pub that hosts both a beer festival and a steam rally annually. At the Southern end of the village the church and school sit side by side, with the latter said to be haunted by the ghost of the former's constructor. All that, and still no mention of RAF Snaith, based in this village to avoid confusion with RAF Pocklington.
Yep, the East Riding once again gives us plenty to see. This is the beautiful village of POLLINGTON.

Colin and Sue's Long Ride Home . Day 4, Boroughbridge to Pocklington
So day four of our 'Long Ride Home'. An easy ride from Boroughbridge following 'The Way of the Roses' cycle route. We stopped at Beningbrough Hall for coffee and cake just to help us on our way. Riding through York was pleasant. It started to rain half an hour before we reached Pocklington, only light rain but within minutes of us entering our hotel room the heavens really opened.

EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #108: BISHOP WILTON
Welcome Bishop Wilton, described on the website of its local shop as “an extraordinary village and one of Yorkshire’s best kept secrets”. Nestled beneath Bishop Wilton Wold, that same website goes on to say the village is not only beautiful but much of its real appeal rests on its sense of community. That’s the reason many people move here. After walking around this one we couldn’t disagree with any of that!
A secret is certainly right. No matter which way you enter Bishop Wilton, the village as an entity is not highly visible. The most impressive approach is from the east, as the whole village opens up dramatically as you descend the Wolds. It’s a beautiful village, and its centre with its long green bisected by Bishop Wilton Beck, has been a conservation area since the 1970s.
The name Bishop Wilton is a mixture of two elements. Firstly, the Bishop part is thanks to a huge set of earthworks, whilst the Wilton part can be attributed to a Saxon saint – St Edith. Its got an old watermill, two old chapels, a pub called The Fleece Inn and a village hall with a sports area. It also contains the greater part of a WWII airfield.
Theoretically, this is a place lots of people should know, not just for its history but also for its main attraction. Since 1897, Bishop Wilton has held an annual event every July. Named the Bishop Wilton Show, almost 2,000 people now attend it every year.
