Places to see in ( Brest - France ) Oceanopolis

Places to see in ( Brest - France ) Oceanopolis

Océanopolis is a center of scientific culture dedicated to the oceans , located in Brest , near the marina of Moulin Blanc. The shape of the first building, the temperate pavilion, is reminiscent of a crab . Public equipment, It is owned by Brest Metropolis and it is managed by a mixed economy company , Brest'aim.

Designed by architect Jacques Rougerie , Océanopolis opened in 1990. The primary goal was to provide a showcase for marine science through the temperate pavilion. Brest brings together 60% of European research on the sea. Completely redesigned in 2000 with the addition of polar and tropical pavilions, Océanopolis offers a scientific approach to the marine environment as a whole.

For this, about fifty aquariums of 50 to 1,000,000 liters for the shark basin are offered to the public. In addition to basins, various media (video, interactive terminals, panels ...) provide additional information on the biology of species , the protection of environments, the functioning of ecosystems.

The center is divided into three pavilions corresponding to three different environments: temperate , polar and tropical . 10,000 animals and marine plants of 1,000 species can be discovered in this complex. Océanopolis includes 8,700 m2 of visitor areas and 4 million liters of seawater, including 1 million for the shark aquarium.

Eric Hussenot, marine biologist passionate about marine mammals and Jean-Paul Alayse, oceanographer and aquarium specialist, have a joint aquarium-museum project since the early 1980s. These two CNRS researchers write the memoir Project for the creation of an aquarium-museum in Brest highlighting the potential of the ecosystems of the Iroise Sea and convince Pierre Maille , president of the general council of Finistère and mayor of Brest, to finance their project.

The first pavilion of Océanopolis, the temperate pavilion has been designed to showcase the maritime and scientific activities of the region. From the bottom of the Atlantic continental shelf to the sandy beach, we discover animals and plants of the Brittany coast in reconstituted environments closer to reality. This pavilion also proposes to know more about the physical phenomena of the oceans like the tides , the waves or the formation of the oceans thanks to the oceanographic space realized in collaboration with the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the marine (SHOM) and various scientific programs like the EUR-OCEANS program.

Opened at the same time as the Polar Pavilion, the Tropical Pavilion is built as a four-legged journey through the tropical seas. At the entrance of this tropical pavilion, the visit begins with the lagoon, a new aquarium that allows you to observe from the surface of the water the species of a shallow tropical lagoon. At each stage of the visit is then a tropical zone and one or more basins and a theme.

Plougastel-Daoulas, Finistère, Brittany - France 4K Travel Channel

Plougastel-Daoulas in the department Finistère in Brittany is a commune which is famous for its strawberries, not only among gourmets. Therefore it is not surprising that the only strawberry museum of the world is located here. However, after our arrival the artistically arranged calvary from the 17th century in front of the church stabbed us into the eye. It was built after a plague epidemic. During the war in 1944, an American soldier saved the 181 figures, made of Kersanton stone ( grey granite), in the presbytery before the bomb raids. But the calvary and several figures were damaged. The army officer John D. Skilton was in Plougastel-Daoulas during the war. In civil life he was the curator of the Washington Museum and founded the Plougastel Calvary Restoration Fund Inc. With the money, the restoration started in 1949.
Strawberry museum
Right next to the church, we found the strawberry museum and were curious what there is to see.
In the 18th century, the Savoyard Amédée-François Frézier brought the strawberry from Chile to France. The Bretons loved the fruit and cultivated it successfully in the marine climate. Already in the 19th century they started with the export.
A map shows the preferential cultivable areas in Finistère. The strawberry farmers plant the Gariguette strawberries. Due to its top flavor, the strawberries have the reputation to be the best in the world. 85% of the harvest gets exported, predominant to the USA.
On presentation boards you see how the life of the strawberry farmers has evolved over the centuries. In addition, a lot of period furniture and costumes are exhibited.
Lace making course
In a side room of the museum we came across a round of local women. The friendly women waved us in and we were able to watch how they got instructed in making lace. Lace making is a skill that probably had its origins in the 16th century in Italy. This skills are rarely found today.

Located: 1 Rue Jean Fournier, 29470 Plougastel-Daoulas
*** History of the calvary
What was an enclos paroissial was hit by bombing during the 1944 Liberation of France and the Calvary is really all that is left. The parish church of Saint-Pierre, which had been built in 1870 to replace the existing 17th-century church, was left in ruins and ultimately rebuilt in 1950. The Calvary had been built between 1602 and 1604 to mark the end of the bubonic plague epidemic of 1598 and has been classified as a monument historique since 1889. The Calvary stands in the centre of Plougastel-Daoulas, just by the parish church. The name of the Calvary in Breton translates as the Cross of the Plague. It was on 23 August 1944 that the area was bombarded by the American forces as they advanced towards Brest. Several of the statues on the Calvary were badly damaged, as were the three crosses. John D. Skilton, an Army Officer and a curator at the Washington Museum in civilian life, was in Plougastel-Daoulas at the time of the bombing, saw the damage done and resolved to restore the Calvary. When back in the USA, he formed the Plougastel Calvary Restoration Fund Inc to raise the funds needed for the Calvary's restoration and, sufficient funds having been raised, the restoration started in 1949 under the direction of the Ministère des Beaux-Arts et des Monuments Historiques who used the services of the sculptor Millet. Further restoration was carried out between 2003 and 2004. The Calvary is 10 metres high. The various scenes depicted are arranged along the lines of the cardinal points. The scenes relating to the birth of Christ and his burial are grouped on the eastern side, whilst on the northern side are scenes dealing with Christ's suffering. On the southern side the scenes deal with Passover, (the Last supper), Jesus' washing of Peter's feet and the chemin de croix (the path to Calvary). On the western side we encounter scenes of Christ's death and resurrection.
