Klong Yaychid Pier: Bang Krachao Guided Tour #2

⬇️ About Bang Krachao:

Bang Krachao (occasionally spelled as Kachao), is a vast man-made island nestled in a serene curve of Bangkok's Chao Phraya River, covered with lush Nipa Palm trees. This area, brimming with verdant landscapes, plantations, and parks, is commonly dubbed the green lungs of Bangkok. Situated in the Phra Pradaeng district, Samut Prakan province, Bang Krachao holds ecological significance due to its abundant greenery. This area plays a crucial role not in warding off invasions, but in combating environmental pollution. Remarkably, it is responsible for absorbing approximately 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually and surpasses this by emitting an even greater quantity of oxygen each year. Bang Krachao has been a refuge for the Mon community, displaced from lower Burma, for over a century, enriching its cultural tapestry.

In the 1780s, a small canal was constructed through the narrower part of Bang Krachao (Pak Lat village), transforming this small piece of land into a quasi-island, reducing the distance of river voyages by 18 kilometres, making boat travel more efficient. However, this development had unintended consequences as it allowed the saline waters of the Gulf of Thailand to flow into the upper parts of the river, adversely affecting both the water-based and surrounding ecosystems. Although the canal was eventually closed, the alteration led to Bang Krachao being perceived as an island.

In the early 1800s, Pak Lat in Bang Krachao was among the few populated locations, strategically positioned near the shortcut canal. This area was crucial for Bangkok, as it supplied the city with essential resources like firewood and nipa palm leaves, commonly used for roofing.

⬇️ About Rock Around Bangkok:

We design off-the-beaten-track routes and museum experiences, encompassing team-building activities, private excursions, games, and quizzes, to immerse individuals and businesses in Bangkok's rich cultural heritage and Thai history, guiding them through it.

⬇️ Concept, vision, mission and operations:

As designers of cultural itineraries, we dedicate ourselves to promoting the cultural heritage of Bangkok, Rattanakosin, since its foundation in 1782. We believe that this saga truly begins with the fall of Ayutthaya and, consequently, with the foundation of the Kingdom of Thonburi in 1767.

The concept of Rock Around illustrates our desire to think outside the box and avoid tourist crowds, focusing instead on the treasures of Bangkok's cultural heritage. This heritage includes monuments, religious sites, museums, galleries, institutions, street food, themed bars and restaurants, communities, parks, and districts. Our approach is distinguished by a desire to tell stories, linking Bangkok's history to Thailand's more recent history.

Based on this historical and conceptual foundation, we develop and offer thematic itineraries (the Rock Around series), forming a coherent whole. We offer these as private tours or team-building sessions, during which we accompany our clients, be they travellers or businesses. The difference lies in the integration of games and quizzes to explore the cultural asset in question (one of the sites visited during the complete itinerary).

In parallel, in a spirit of total improvisation, we offer custom private excursions. Based on our Bangkok Cultural Heritage puzzle, which currently includes more than 200 pieces (the cultural assets we have carefully curated), clients choose their preferred themes. We then create their itinerary for the day during our meeting at their hotel. The possibilities are almost endless for those who wish to discover Bangkok's cultural heritage, truly off the beaten path, in a Bangkok with a local insider manner.

Phra Pradaeng Arcade Market

The markets in Thailand are quite colorful, they sell all sorts of things, go for the sake of interest. But mostly it is fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and seafood.

Рынки в Таиланде довольно колоритны, на них продается всякая всячина, сходите ради интересса. Но в основном - это фрукты, овощи, мясо, рыба и морепродукты.

Chulachomklao Fort, HTMS Mae Klong, Phra Pradaeng, Samut Prakan Province, Thailand. ( 10 )

The first part of the journey was from Bangkok, to this Fort. However the taxi driver took the wrong turning on the way there and we ended up in Samut Prakan town before finding our way to Chulachomklao fort.
The journey to Phra Chulachomklao Fort is a historical attraction of Samut Prakan Province (29 km south of Bangkok). It is located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River on Suksawat Road. The fort is worth visiting as you will get to know another aspect of Thailand besides its cultural and architectural facets. The Naval History Park at Chulachomklao Fortress is situated at the mouth of Chao Phraya River, Tambon Laem Fa Pha. The fortress' compound houses a magnificent standing monument of King Rama V, which is located in the front of the fortress. Chulachomklao Fortress is a modern fort and has played an important role in protecting the sovereignty of Thailand during 1893 against unfriendly forces. During King Rama Vs reign, there was a period during which England and France were hunting for colonies. All neighbouring countries around Thailand were colonised by England and France. The king commanded that the fortresses at the rivers mouth be renovated and re-equipped, and also hired a foreigner who was a naval specialist as a consultant for planning the development of the Thai navy.
The seven Armstrong guns only saw action that one time. However, they are still in good working order as they fired a seven gun salute to celebrate their 105 th anniversary in 1998. The fort is now open to the public. Below a statue of King Rama V there is an interesting museum about the conflict with France. Also on show to the public is HTMS Maeklong, a warship commissioned from the Japanese shipyards, pre-World War II. The ship was in service for 60 years, including duty as a royal ship for King Rama IX. There is a gun park showing the history of guns and also an interesting mangrove forest walk.
HTMS Mae Klong
Under the statue, there stands an air-conditioned museum exhibiting the military conflict with France. Also on display is the HTMS Mae Klong, an old warship of the Royal Thai Navy preserved as an open-air museum. HTMS Mae Klong was commissioned in 1937. She had been deployed in several missions such as taking part in World War II. The ship also served as a training ship for naval cadets and technical navy students.

She was in service for 59 years, including the prestigious duty as a royal ship for King Rama VIII and King Rama IX ( His Majesty King Bhumibol, the present King ). The ship was decommissioned in 1996

Samut Prakan lies to the south of Bangkok and straddles both sides of the Chao Phraya River where it flows into the Gulf of Thailand. Thus the province is also sometimes called Pak Nam, Thai for 'mouth of river'. In this video I explore the sights on the western side of the river that include a very tranquil park, the town of Phra Pradaeng, a chedi that appears on the provincial seal, not one but two forts (with a climb onboard a Japanese-built frigate at one of them) and a coastal temple.

Bangkok 25 THB to cross the Chao Phraya River with car to Phra Pradaeng and Bang Nam Phueng

BANGKOK. 25 THB TO CROSS THE CHAO PHRAYA RIVER WITH CAR TO PHRA PRADAENG AND BANG NAM PHUENG

Drive down to the car ferry terminal in Samut Prakan and cross the Chao Phraya River for only 25 THB saves a lot of driving and much quicker.

From the other side of the river it is only approx 4 kms to Bang Nam Phueng floating market .....which is one of the biggest in the Bangkok area.

This is truly a gem of a market. It’s a local attraction and enjoys favorability with weekender Thai couples, families and small groups visiting. The number of Western tourists is demonstrably small giving it an atmosphere of “authenticity”.

It has the usual variety of booths selling fresh produce, plants and myriad opportunities to purchase fried and grilled food. It also has many unique booths. One can find Siamese fighting fish for sale,
unusual retail items and there is a sling shot competition area in which competitors can fire their seeds/stones at strings of soup cans that have been hung up as targets.

Great morning out shopping and looking what the market has to offer

Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) - Bangkok Bike Tour of Phra Pradaeng (and Lunch)

A Bangkok bike tour of Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) in Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง) makes an excellent day trip. Read more of my Bangkok travel tips here:

Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า), or the larger area of Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง), is known as Bangkok's green lunch. It's not an island, but it's a section of land that's separated from major Bangkok by being within a horseshoe in the river. The piece of land is just across the river from Bangkok city, but it's such a world of difference. Characterized by trees, green spaces, low homes and neighborhoods, and a network of canals and elevated walking paths creates the perfect environment for a Bangkok bike tour. The first step getting to Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) is to first take a taxi to Wat Khlong Toei Nok temple, located in the Khlong Toei area of Bangkok and right along the Chao Phraya river. For just 10 baht you can then board a small boat that will ferry you across the Chao Phraya to Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า), a whole new world. The ride takes just a few minutes.

Once you've arrived to Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า), you can then rent a bicycle as soon as you get off the boat. The bikes for rent cost 50 Thai Baht per hour or 100 Thai Baht per day - I think it's worth it to go for the whole day - and you might end up staying longer than you expected - so go for the day rental! After getting out trusty bicycles ready, we started off following the road enroute to the main park that's located within Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า). It took just about 10 minutes or less to reach the designated park where you can enter and ride and walk around for free. The park is nicely maintained and there's a large lake in the middle. But the park is not the only place to ride in Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง). One of my favorite parts of the area is riding along the elevated concrete paths. They are raised above the ground as the ground can be muddy and flooded, but the paths provide an awesome form of transportation. They are just wide enough to have a Bangkok bike tour on them comfortably. Another interesting aspect of biking around are the many temples which are all around. You can stop off at a variety of temples when you're biking along. Also, if you go to Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง) on the weekend, you can bike to Bang Nam Pheung (ตลาดน้ำบางน้ำผึ้ง) floating market ( After biking around for a few hours we decided to stop at a relaxing restaurant for some Thai food lunch. There are many Thai restaurants to eat at throughout Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) when you're taking a Bangkok bike tour - you'll have no problem finding food or drinks.

A Bangkok bike tour of Bang Krachao (บางกระเจ้า) and Phra Pradaeng (พระประแดง) is one of the best things to do in Bangkok! It's a great affordable attraction and offers not only some exercise from all the Thai street food, but also a time to relax and enjoy nature.

Cycling Bang Krachao Phra Pradaeng Bangkok Thailand

Samut Prakan to Phra Pradaeng, the Approach, across the Chao Phraya River, Samut Prakan, Thailand

Samut Prakan Pier and the Chao Phraya River.
Wiboonsri Market, Samut Prakan, is full of fresh food, vegetables, sea food, fish, its where many people flock to, to buy their food. I was amazed at the quality and selection here, and it was really cheap compared to most other markets.
Samut Prakan, also known as Pak Nam, is located 29 kilometres south of Bangkok, around the area where the Chao Phraya River flows into the Gulf of Thailand. It is a town of the Ayutthaya period. Samut Prakan is home to countless historical and cultural sites. It occupies an area of 1,004 square kilometres and is administratively divided into 5 districts ( Amphoes ) and 1 sub-district ( Ging Amphoe ) Amphoe Muang Samut Prakan, Amphoe Phra Pradaeng, Amphoe Bang Phli, Amphoe Bang Bo, Amphoe Phra Sumut Chedi, and Ging Amphoe Bang Sao Thong.

In Thai the word samut is from Sanskrit, Samudra means ocean or sea and prakan means fortress.

Samut Prakan is located at the mouth of the Chao Phraya river to the Gulf of Thailand. Thus the province is also sometimes called Pak Nam , the Thai word for the mouth of a river. The part of the province located on the western side of the river consist mostly of rice and prawn fields as well as mangrove forests, while the east part is the urban centre - including industrial factories. It is part of the Bangkok metropolis, the urbanization on both sides of the provincial boundary is identical. The province has a coastline of about 47.2 kilometre's.

Bang Pu Nature Reserve, about 12 km east of the town center, has a big bird population. Especially during the winter the Sakdi pier at Bang Pu is very popular for Thai people feeding the wintering seagulls. The park is run jointly by the Royal Thai Army and the Thai WWF, and was officially established at the 72nd birthday of Queen Sirikit in 2004.
The HTMS Maeklong, a former Royal Thai Navy ship is moored in concrete at Chulachomklao Fort at the mouth of the Chao Phraya in Amphoe Phra Samut Chedi.
Two major tourist attractions of the province are located in Amphoe Mueang Samut Prakan, the capital district: Mueang Boran or Ancient City or now Ancient Siam, a park that features downscaled replicas of all major historical buildings of Thailand; and the Crocodile Farm.

Besides being the home of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Amphoe Bang Phli is famous for the annual Lotus Flower ( Rap Bua ) festival, which usually takes place on the full moon in October.

Walk in Phra Pradaeng, Bangkok, December 2008

This is from a walk I took with my friend Frank in December 2008. We are in the neighbourhood of Wat Bang Krasop in Phra Pradaeng. So peaceful and still only a 20 minute car ride from downtown BKK!

Great Bangkok Street Food in Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market. Thailand

instragram: settime2588

Bang Nam Phueng Floating Market lies around 14.5 km southeast of central Bangkok . It' s a riverside market, with several boats parked along the banks and stalls on solid ground. It's located in an unusual loop of the Chao Phraya River, nicknamed 'the Green Lung of Bangkok'. Despite being quite close to Bangkok, this surprisingly untouched area is covered with vegetation and traditional homes. Rows of low tables are set along the riverbank under a long and thatched roof. Bang Nam Phueng Market is surprisingly authentic as it's mostly frequented by locals.
Just like Khlong Lat Mayom floating market, as soon as you arrive, you’ll immediately be surrounded by little thatch covered stalls selling a wide range of random things. The market is surrounded by lush forest and tropical greenery. Often the foot paths are elevated above water with trees, vines and shrubs all adding to the wonderful atmosphere. You can see some vendors boiling noodles or barbecuing satay’s directly from their boats and you’ll find all kinds of snacks and goods in nicer packaging than what would normally be presented on the streets. The weekend market Bang Nam Pheung is a chance to discover and sample local foods, sweets and unusual fruits. The atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant and people are very friendly. It's a nice spot for experiencing a village lifestyle.
Thai floating markets ,especially for Bangkok residents, are the perfect way to forget about city life and to escape from work and busy city life for the day – a Thai tourist attraction just on the outskirts of Bangkok.
