NOTABLE FEATURED TORNADOES OF 2024

APRIL 26 - MAJOR TORNADO OUTBREAK
On April 26, the SPC issued a 10% risk of significant tornadoes stretching into 7 states. What would unfold was the most incredible tornado outbreak of the year. For 5 hours a swift supercell would produce numerous tornadoes in Kansas and Missouri, the strongest an EF2. However the much more incredible events were to the north.

Near Lincoln Nebraska an EF3 would toss cars 100 yards. Alex Fanning documented the incredible tornado tracking northeast of town.

Juston Drake and Simon Brewer captured an intense tornado near Tennant Iowa. Numerous other tornadoes tore through area, many leaving wakes of destruction. In all, at least 77 tornadoes have been confirmed in 6 states. Despite the widespread damage only 1 fatality was reported in Pottawattamie County Iowa.

MAY 21 IOWA OUTBREAK
On May 21, two major tornadoes would impact Iowa. The second and likely more powerful would land a direct hit on the town of Greenfield. Numerous homes and buildings were leveled earning it an EF4 rating. Five people would lose their lives.

A Doppler on Wheels was scanning the tornado as it sliced through Greenfield. DOW scientists preliminary calculations determine peak wind speeds as high as 309 – 318 mph likely occurring in less than a second.

Along with the 1999 Bridgecreek Oklahoma tornado and the 2013 El Reno Oklahoma Tornado.
These measurements are AMONG the highest wind speeds ever determined using DOW data.

MAY 25 VALLEY VIEW TEXAS
May 25 brought another outbreak of tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma with the most notable being a rain-wrapped EF3 striking a community near Valley View Texas. Manufactured and mobile homes were heavily damaging or demolishing causing seven fatalities making this tornado the most deadly in 2024.

1:42:57 Rio Grande Gorge Bridge
1:44:43 Capulin Volcano National Monument

New Mexico's parks are less crowded many other western parks but still have stunning scenery. On this trip we drive from South to North. Starting by exploring 3 of the least visited National Parks in the country- White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mts..

In Alamogordo we visit New Mexico's Space History Museum and see rockets tested at the nearby missile range.

We go to one of my favorite places- 3 Rivers Petroglyphs site to hike among 20,000 ancient rock carvings and meet a blind lady in her 70 who enjoys hiking!

On the road north we go to the UFO museum in Roswell. And then walk on a Lava Field at the Valley of Fires BLM camping area, before visiting the Trinity Site.

In Albuquerque we visit the 4 sites of Petroglyph Monument including a volcano field! While looking at a map I saw a marker for Coronado State Park, so we make an unscheduled stop to see the remains an old adobe village on the Rio Grande where Spanish Conquistador Coronado once stayed- until the battle.

We make a quick stop at a stone church built in 1621. On our way to Super Volcano- or at least its remains-- Valles Caldera.

The highlight of the northern part of the trip is the cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Monument. We visit the cliff houses and see the nearby stone village.

We make a quick stop in Santa Fe and another in Taos before flying over the spectacular Rio Grande Gorge Bridge before our final stop on top of a cinder cone volcano and Capulin Volcano National Monument.

Pecos National Historical Park + Pecos Mountains & State Park NM

Pecos National Historical Park & Exploring the Pecos Mountains

In this video we are exploring all around Pecos, New Mexico

The Pecos mountains is a section of the Santa Fe National Forest just NE of Santa Fe. It can be accessed from the town of Pecos, NM and the wilderness opportunities are abundant! This is a very popular wilderness area for backpackers.

We start our day trip visiting the Pecos National Historical Park. This was a National Monument until it converted to a National Historical Park in the 1990s. Ruins from the ancient pueblos are here, along with the remnants of the Franciscan church that was established when the Spanish came through and tried to convert the natives. This area is the site of the notable 'Battle of Glorieta Pass' which is known as the Gettysburg of the West. The Confederate soldiers were trying to take over the West, and in this key battle in 1862, the Union Army defeated the Confederates in just three days of fighting. The area is so deep with history, and the views are incredible!

After visiting the Pecos National Historical Park, we make our way up highway 63 to explore the Pecos Wilderness and stop in to a few campgrounds. I was curious how this area fared after the Hermits Peak/Calf Canyon Fire this past year. This canyon survived the blaze, the forest is still damaged from the fire reaching the other side of the mountain, so erosion and flash flooding will continue to be a problem.

Many areas along 63 are now designated a state park with the newly formed Pecos Canyon State Park' There are a few new campgrounds that have been established with the State Park. Pecos Canyon State Park is still under development.

We stop in at the intersection in Tererro, NM where the highway crosses the Pecos river and the highway goes to the Holy Ghost Campground. We stop at the Cowles Ponds and see the turn off to Winsor Trail. Winsor Trail is a 13.5 mile out and back (13.5 miles round trip) hike to Santa Fe Baldy at 12,632'. From this stop we traveled three more miles to Jack's Creek Campground, one of my favorite campgrounds in the Pecos. It was surprisingly empty over Labor Day Weekend.

On the way back home, we find a historical marker with a memorial to the volunteers who fought with the Union Soldiers at the Battle of Glorieta Pass on highway 50.

I hope you enjoyed this tour of the Pecos!

PECOS RIVER HIGH BRIDGE | Fort Davis National Historic Site in Texas

Our van life Texas continues, and after crossing the Pecos River in Texas, we are officially in the American Frontier - the Old West, or the Wild West!

Here, at the Seminole Canyon State Park, lies the Pecos River High Bridge. The Pecos River Bridge is the highest highway bridge in Texas, and it didn't disappoint. This is a great spot to do some birding, and we saw a Bald Eagle pestering another bird for food.

From Pecos River, we continued on to Fort Davis, Texas to visit the Fort Davis National Historic Site.

Fort Davis is one of the best surviving examples of an Indian Wars frontier military post in the Southwest.

We send an email every so often to keep you updated on where we are, what we're doing, and how much we are spending! Get our emails here!

✦ GEAR I USE ✦

📸 Cameras:
---------------------------------------------------
I get a lot of questions about the cameras I use. Here are my main cameras:
• [GoPro Hero 13](
• [GoPro Hero 13 Creator Edition] (
This is a very durable camera. It withstands the elements and can go places other cameras can’t. There are many accessories available for GoPro cameras which makes the camera endlessly customizable and versatile. If you are intending to make vlogs or travel videos where you speak, you might prefer the creator edition which comes with more accessories.

• [DJI Osmo Pocket 3](
• [DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Creator Combo] (
This little handheld camera is very easy to pack because of its small size. It is not as rugged as the GoPro, but is easy to carry and make stable video. I use the creator combo version which includes an additional battery and a microphone that can be clipped to your shirt for improved audio which I like for filming walking tours.

🔋 Other useful tech:
---------------------------------------------------
• [DJI OM 6](
This device attaches to a smartphone to help record more stable video.
• [GoPro Enduro Battery](
An extra battery for the GoPro.
• [Anker USB-C Cable](
A flexible and durable charging cable that charges quickly.
• [Anker USB-C Power Bank](
These are great for recharging my phone or cameras while traveling, and are also useful for power outages.
• [Anker MagGo Power Bank] (
This battery connects directly to the back of iPhones that have MagSafe and can charge the phone without the use of a cable.
• [Samsung Micro SD Card 256 GB](
This memory card works on most small cameras, and can record for a long time.
• [Samsung 2TB SSD Portable SSD](
I take this hard drive with me when I travel so that I can back up the footage that I record on my trip. It fits in one of the pockets inside my tech case, and holds a lot of footage.

✈️ Travel gear I like:
---------------------------------------------------
• [Peak Design Travel Duffel](
This durable bag fits easily into the overhead compartments on airplanes and the straps can be configured to be comfortably worn as a backpack, which is nice for long walks through an airport.
• [Peak Design Tech Pouch Large](
• [Peak Design Tech Pouch Small] (
I have both sizes, and have used the larger one consistently for many years. They are incredibly durable, and nicely fit all of my camera gear. I like that I can fit a GoPro inside of the larger one, along with cables, SD Cards, a battery and a small hard drive. People traveling with less gear or less space in their bags might prefer just the smaller pouch.
• [Wetcat Turkish Beach Towel] (
This towel spreads out large, but packs up tiny and dries quickly. I have disliked every other pack towel I have ever used, but this one is made of cotton and feels soft and does not have a funny smell.
• [Yeti Cooler]( )
Buying food when traveling gets expensive, so I try to pack as much food as I can. This cooler keeps things fresh for a long time. It also means that I can pick up local foods when I go places and bring them home with me.

🎧 Audiobooks:
---------------------------------------------------
I listen to lots of audiobooks while on the road. Get started with a free audiobook here:
• [Audible](
You might enjoy listening to Forget the Alamo the Rise and Fall of an American Myth (
