Day trips from Auckland: The impressive Hunua Falls

One of the best day trips from Auckland, New Zealand. The Hunua Ranges provide a very extensive network of walking tracks and mountainbike tracks. The impressive Hunua Falls themselves make for a very pleasant outing and is very popular among locals. The best half day track is the Cossey Massey track, which combines the Hunua Falls with the Cossey Dam. While you walk through the Cossey Gorge you are likely to spot native trees and birds. The views are amazing and it is a great place to enjoy nature.

Hidden Gems in The Coromandel Peninsula | Tairua & Whangamata, NEW ZEALAND

The Coromandel Peninsula is about 2 hours east of Auckland and it's a popular holiday destination for many Kiwis. Tairua is on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula while Whangamata is on the southeast coast. In this vlog, we spend our day checking them both out.

First stop after reaching Tairua was to get some food. Being a coastal town, we had to try their fish & chips and whitebait fritter. We took our takeaways just down the road to enjoy them in a park next to the water. Peter returned later the same day to get their raw fish too.

Surf'n'Sand Takeaways
Address: Shop 7/236 Main Road North, Tairua 3508
Hours: Mon–Thu 11am–9pm, Fri 11am–9:30pm. Sat 12–9:30pm, Sun 12–9pm

Across the road from Surf & Sand Takeaways Peter spotted an intriguing looking shop called Heaven & Earth. It was filled with a vast array of gemstones, crystals, rocks, jewellery and even fossils! Amazingly they also have New Zealand's largest collection of moldavite. They had Items we never thought we'd see in a small town shop in NZ. Such a cool store with really friendly staff. Definitely a gem of the Coromandel.

Heaven & Earth
Address: 227 Main Road North, Tairua 3508
Hours: Sun–Thu 9:30am–5pm, Fri & Sat 9:30am–5:30pm

When in Tairua, we definitely recommend doing the walk up to Mt Paku's summit. Mount Paku is a volcanic peak and it's a relatively short walk with highly rewarding panoramic views at the top of the ocean, neighbouring islands and Tairua. We parked at Memorial Reserve and followed the signposts to reach the top.

Our accommodation was in Whangamata. We didn't realise when we went that it was during the Whangamata Beach Hop festival which is NZ's biggest celebration of the 50's and 60's. It's an annual 5 day festival that celebrates the culture, music, fashion, and automobiles of that era. We stayed at Kevan and Yvonne's B&B so we had a lovely, clean and comfortable private room in their home for the night.

AJ Walks Auckland - Papakura Eastern Suburbs

Had to leave the house for a while for an open home session, so figured I'd take the phone for a stroll around the nearby streets for a chill weekend wander. Cut things short a bit as I was expecting a call. Some interesting sights and nice gardens, hope you enjoy.

Mooncakes, Fo Guang Shan Temple, Botanic Gardens & Satay Noodle House | South Auckland, NEW ZEALAND

On an unexpected sunny day, we were invited over to our friend's place to enjoy some homemade mooncakes. It was almost mooncake festival then (aka moon festival or mid-autumn festival) and since they were homemade mooncakes by our friend Ting Ting (who is a great cook and baker), we rushed over!

Afterwards we visited New Zealand's largest Buddhist temple - Fo Guang Shan. We were granted special permission to video inside the grounds and even given a private guided tour which was also unexpected but which we were very grateful for. We got to explore and learn about the temple, exhibitions there, Buddhism, customs and even the proper Buddhist way to hold joss sticks.

Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple
Address: 16 Stancombe Road Flat Bush, Manukau, Auckland 2016
Hours: Mondays Closed
Tue–Sun 9am–4pm

After our time at Fo Guang Shan temple, we headed over to Manurewa to see if we could find more cherry blossoms in bloom at the Auckland Botanic Gardens.

Auckland Botanic Gardens
Address: 102 Hill Road, The Gardens, Auckland 2105
Hours: Mon–Sun 8am–6pm

Once we started getting hungry though, we made our way over to Satay Noodle House in Papakura that we had been wanting to try for some time due to rave reviews from others. It definitely didn't disappoint and we enjoyed a delicious and satisfying meal at this awesome South Auckland restaurant.

Satay Noodle House
Address: 183 Great South Road, Papakura, Auckland 2110
Hours: Mon & Tue Closed
Wed–Sun 12–8pm

Auckland Travel Guide - Amazing New Zealand experience

Auckland Travel Guide - Amazing New Zealand experience

Auckland is a modern cosmopolitan city with a population of 1.45 million people — roughly one third of New Zealand's entire population reside in Auckland. In the centre, the iconic Sky Tower has views of Viaduct Harbour, which is full of superyachts and lined with bars and cafes. Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park, is based around an extinct volcano and home to the formal Wintergardens. Near Downtown, Mission Bay Beach has a seaside promenade.

The city and suburbs have developed within the same time frame and similar urban patterns as California (Los Angeles and Auckland have shared urban planning designs and are sister cities). Today the city and suburbs sprawl over a large urban area, hemmed to the east and west by two large harbours (Waitemata and Manukau) and ocean (Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea) beyond.

Auckland is in a temperate climate zone and does not experience hot or cold extremes at any time of year. The summer months are December to March. The sun is very strong during this time and it is advisable to use sunscreen and cover skin from prolonged exposure. April to June brings cooler temperatures and rain toward the end of June which persists through winter until September and October.

If you want to explore Auckland's more distant suburbs, it's possible to take a service from the CBD to a hub where information and further connections are available. Hubs are located in larger suburban centres - retail malls, entertainment facilities and (depending on destination) beaches are never far away. The bigger hubs are (buses only unless otherwise indicated):

Albany
Orewa/Hibiscus Coast
Botany
Sylvia Park (buses and trains)
Henderson (buses and trains)
Otahuhu
Onehunga (train station nearby)
Manukau (buses and trains)

Part 2, Joy Ride - Manurewa to Papakura, South Auckland, New Zealand

This is a continuation of Part 1 Joy Ride - Manukau to Manurewa, South Auckland, New Zealand.

Just to give you a brief information about Papakura. Papakura is a suburb of Auckland, in northern New Zealand. It is located on the shores of the Pahurehure Inlet, approximately 32 kilometres south of the Auckland CBD. It is under the authority of the Auckland Council. The merging of City Council was changed when a new Prime Minister has elected, about 10 years ago.

An old highway, the Great South Road, runs through Papakura, forming its main street. The road was constructed during the New Zealand Wars to transport supplies to the Waikato campaign. It was guarded by armed constabulary and was a designated military road and now it runs from Papakura to Auckland CBD - return.

Hunua Falls - Auckland , New Zealand

The Hunua Falls located in the Hunua Ranges Regional Park are an easily accessible 30m waterfall less than an hours drive from the Auckland CBD travelling down the southern motorway and through rural Papakura.

A great place to bring the family including seniors as the waterfall is and easy safe walk. Not so safe is swimming below the waterfall with deep pools and non-buoyant aerated water that won't support swimmers as a number have found to their peril.

At times generating beautiful rainbows especially in winter when water flows are at their greatest.
Nearby bush is lush and water soaked with many beautiful tree ferns (Dicksonia squarrosa) with their tall trunks and fern tops also seen in the forest understory of this video which I made in Rotorua in 2021.
