Chandpur (চাঁদপুর) is a district located in Bangladesh's Chittagong Division.
During the ruling of the Baro-Bhuiyans, this region was occupied by Chand Ray, the Zamindar of Bikrampur and son of Kedar Ray. According to historian J. M. Sengupta, the region was named Chandpur, following the name of Chand Ray. On the other hand, others say that the name of this region comes from Chand Faqir of Purindapur mahalla of Chandpur, Bangladesh. It is said that an administrator named Shah Ahmed Chand came here from Delhi in the fifteenth century and established a river port. It was declared as Chandpur district on 15 February 1984.

History The temple of Umananda was built in 1694 A.D. by the Bar Phukan Garhganya Handique by the order of King Gadadhar Singha (1681–1696), one of the ablest and strongest rulers of the Ahom dynasty. The original temple was however immensely damaged by a devastating earthquake of 1897. Later, it was reconstructed by a rich local merchant who chose to inscribe the interior part of a Siva temple with Vaisnavite slogans. During the short period of the Mughal occupation of Kamrupa. Land men and money were received by the priests of the temples of Umananda from the Mughal Emperors Jahangir and Aurangzeb....
Umananda Temple Overview The Umananda Temple is located in the small Peacock Island amidst the mighty Brahmaputra. This quiet place of worship is named after and dedicated to Lord Shiva. The name 'Umananda' comes from the two Hindi words 'uma' - Lord Shiva?s wife and 'ananda' meaning happiness. The Peacock Island is the smallest inhabited riverine in the world and possibly one of the most beautiful too. The Umananda temple is nestled in the laps of this serene island whose shores are washed by the mighty Brahmaputras. It is a haven for nature lovers. The surroundings of the temple are undisturbed and serene and thus prove to be a perfect place just to sit and enjoy the beauty of the area. The temple is situated on the top of a hill called Bhasmakala or Bhasmakuta. The island was originally built in 1694 A.D. by King Gadadhar Singha. However, it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1897 and later rebuilt by a wealthy local merchant. The Umananda temple was crafted beautifully by the skilled Assamese workmen. Aside from Lord Shiva, there are 10 other Hindu Gods whose idols reside in the shrines. Aside from being a place of worship, The Umananda temple is also a pleasurable exception to the typical places of worship. Devoid of the cacophony of forceful religion, this place has a serene environment which makes you want to sit down for a while and absorb the beauty of the place.
