A Look At Beautiful Meteora, Central Greece
The Meteora is a rock formation in central Greece hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, second in importance only to Mount Athos. The six (of an original twenty-four) monasteries are built on immense natural pillars and hill-like rounded boulders that dominate the local area. Between the 13th and 14th centuries, the twenty-four monasteries were established atop the rocks. Meteora is located near the town of Kalabaka at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains.
Meteora was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988 because of the outstanding architecture and beauty of the complex, in addition to its religious and artistic significance. The name means lofty, elevated, and is etymologically related to meteor.[

I think this is the cleanest store I have ever shopped at in ALL of Greece. I have been here for awhile now and visiting all the UNESCO sites... So I have been in MANY markets... But this one is the cleanest, nicest presentation and best produce... The staff is a little maybe 'anti' tourist... But I guess if your entire town was over ran with tourists every day of the year it might get a little tough. Anyway.. Its a good place to shop. Smile and nod at the help..........

The old village of Kastraki, Greece - Meteora
The old village of Kastraki is located in the western part of Meteora in Greece and was built among high rocks. It is a department of the municipality of Kalambaka, the most touristically developed village of the Prefecture of Trikala. Kastraki is a picturesque village offering a range of beautiful accommodations, including hotels, camping areas, and rooms for rent. Additionally, visitors can enjoy local restaurants, coffee shops, shops with regional products, and icon painting workshops. The village has an authentic, regional character and offers a glimpse into the local lifestyle of the Greek province. Visitors can enjoy the proximity to nature and find peace of mind in this traditional, beautiful village. The village of Kastraki boasts remarkable stone architecture and clay-tile roofs. They are at most a certain height, as they abide by the National Archaeological Committee's regulations for preserving the village's couleur locale and out of respect for the surrounding landscape. Kastraki is an excellent starting point for a walk towards the stunning Meteora rocks and monasteries. One of the two roads leading to the monasteries passes through this village. The old habitation of Kastraki, also known as Mesochori, was the original main square of Kastraki. The Museum of Geological Formations of Meteora is located in the central square of Kastraki. It is housed in the old building of the Primary School of Kastraki, considered a historical monument. Another beautiful sight is the rock Adrahti. It is a small but impressive rock because of its form and supporting position. Here, you have a stunning view of the Monasteries, Kastraki, and Kalambaka. In Kastraki, visitors can find essential churches built during the Turkish occupation: The Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a basilica with icon paintings and an iconostasis from the 16th century. It is located in the area of Adrahti and is a testament to the region's rich history. – The church of St. Nicholas, an icon painted in 1794, is located southeast of the village. – The church of St. Athanasios, located near the central square, is an icon painted at the end of the 18th century. The village of Kastraki, along with the area of Meteora, has been classified by the Greek State as a traditional village under preservation. It has also been acknowledged as a monument of world heritage by UNESCO, a testament to its cultural and historical importance. Staying in Kastraki, in the 'shadow' of the rocks of Meteora, is a unique experience.
