Ep 6 Renukoot to Varanasi | Rihand Dam | Birla Temple | Mukkha Falls Sonbhadra District, UP Tourism
I started my tour from Varanasi on 2nd August 2022, after visiting Varanasi. I was very curious to visit Sonbhadra, as July to August is the best to visit. Waterfalls become so active, scenic views get enhanced by multifold during the monsoon time. But this time due to lack of rain in Uttar Pradesh that charm was missing.
This was our last day of the tour, video was shot on 9th August 2022 following are the activities we did throughout the day.
Rihand Dam - This dam is about 160 km from varanasi. Built across the rihand river in renukoot. Sonbhadra district has so many power plants which is why it is referred to as energy capital of India.
Shri Renukeshwar Mahadev Mandir - This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva & Goddess parvati, This beautifully designed temple is also known as Birla temple, as it is constructed by Birla group.
Bajrangi Dhaba - We had lunch at this dhaba, Dehati paneer, Mushroom & Kofta, this dhaba is located on the main highway near Robertsganj.
Mukkha falls - This waterfall is located 50 km from Robertsganj, Sonbhadra district.
Shri Ram Bhandar - Located at mint house, quite a popular sweet shop in varanasi, we tried the Malai gilori, Tirangi.
Krishna Paan - Before leaving varanasi, wanted to try paan as the taste of paan you get in varanasi, you will not get anywhere else. I tried the regular paan & Maghai leaf paan at this shop.
During this tour we could not visit many spots, which you can visit when you are on this route.

Rihand Dam also known as Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar, is the largest dam of India by volume. The reservoir of Rihand Dam is called Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar and is India's largest artificial lake. Rihand Dam is a concrete gravity dam located at Pipri in Sonbhadra District in Uttar Pradesh, India. Its reservoir area is on the border of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It is located on the Rihand River, a tributary of the Son River. The catchment area of this dam extends over Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh whereas it supplies irrigation water in Bihar located downstream of the river
Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar is the largest man made lake in India. Rihand dam is a concrete gravity dam with a length of 934.45 m. The maximum height of the dam is 91.46 m and was constructed during period from 1954–62. The dam consists of 61 independent blocks and ground joints. The powerhouse is situated at the toe of the dam, with installed capacity of 300 MW (6 units of 50 MW each). The Intake Structure is situated between blocks no. 28 and 33. The Dam is in distress condition. It is proposed to carry out the rehabilitation works in the dam and the powerhouse.[6] The F.R.L. of the dam is 268.22 ft and it impounds 8.6 Million Acre feet of water. The construction of the dam resulted in forced relocation of nearly 100,000 people
Many super thermal power stations are located in the catchment area of the dam. These are Singrauli, Vindyachal, Rihand, Anpara & Sasan super thermal power stations and Renukoot thermal station. The high alkalinity run off water from the ash dumps (some are located in the reservoir area) of these coal-fired power stations ultimately collects in this reservoir enhancing its water alkalinity and pH range. Using high alkalinity water for irrigation converts the agriculture fields in to fallow Alkali soils.

Sonbhadra district or Sonebhadra is the 2nd largest district of Uttar Pradesh, India. Sonbhadra is the only district in India which borders four states namely Madhya Pradesh, Chhattishgarh Jharkhand and Bihar. In the popular TV Show Kaun Banega Crorepati, a question rewarding 50 lacs was asked based on the fact just mentioned.It lies in the extreme southeast of the state, and is bounded by Mirzapur District to the northwest, Chandauli District to the north, Kaimur and Rohtas districts of Bihar state to the northeast, Garhwa district of Jharkhand state to the east, Koriya and Surguja districts of Chhattisgarh state to the south, and Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh state to the west. The district headquarters is in the town of Robertsganj.Sonbhadra district is an industrial zone and it has lots of minerals like bauxite, limestone, coal,gold etc.Sonbhadra is called as Energy Capital of India because there are so many power plants. Sonbhadra lies between vindhya and Kaimur hills, and its topology and natural environment prompted First Prime minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru to refer to Sonbhadra as The Switzerland of India
The southern region of Sonebhadra is referred to as the Energy Capital of India ;. this region has many electrical power stations around Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar. NTPC (a leading power generation company in India) has three coal-based thermal power plants at Shaktinagar SSTPS(Singrauli Super Thermal Power Station),2000 MW (India's first NTPC Power Plant), [VSTPP (Vindhyachal Super Thermal Power project)] |Vindhyanagar]] (largest capacity in India, 4760 MW) and Bijpur (Rihandnagar, RhSTPP(Rihand Super Thermal Power project), 3000 MW]). Other power stations are at Anpara (UPRVUNL), Obra (UPRVUNL), Renusagar (Hindalco) and Pipri-Hydro (UPRVUNL). NCL (a branch of Coal India Limited) has its headquarters and many coal mines in this region. Hindalco has a major aluminium plant at Renukut.
This region became an industrial heaven from an area of forest and hills. Some of the hills were having limestone and lot of them were having coal. There were some small rivers running through the area and the major was the Son.
Owing to the limestone hills, initially one cement factory was established at Churk in 1956. Later another cement factory started at Dala in 1971 and ancillary unit of Dala got started at Chunar in 1980. The cement factories became the foundation on which other industries were built. A big dam constructed at Pipri in 1961 and named Rihand Dam. The dam produces 300 MW of electricity. Another small dam was constructed at Obra in 1968, 40 km from Rihand dam which generates 99 MW of electricity.
The Birla group then set up an aluminum plant at Renukut, which is one of the biggest aluminum plant of Hindalco. Later, the Birla group set up its own power plant at Renusagar in 1967. This plant has the current capacity of 887.2 MW and supplies the power to Hindalco. The Birlas also started a company in Renukut called HiTech Carbon. Another industrial group initiated a company in Renukut named Kanoria Chemicals, which produces chemicals and later it started own power plant at Renukoot in 1998 which generates 50 MW of electricity.
A big thermal power plant construction was started at Obra in 1967 with support of Russian engineers and was successfully completed in 1971. This had a capacity to produce 1550 MW of electricity.Another power plant was initiated at Anpara in 1980. It produces 1630 MW of electricity and has proposed to extend the capacity to 2630 MW. NTPC's first thermal power plant that it started in Shaktinagar, generates 2000 MW. The plant at Bijpur generates 3000 MW.
This region has three cement factories, one of the biggest aluminum plants, a carbon plant, a chemical factory and an energy hub of India, which generates 11000 MW with plans to reach 20000 MW. The whole country is benefiting from this region, which was once full of forests and hills, which seemed like infertile land.
In 2006 the Ministry of Panchayati Raj named Sonbhadra one of the country's 250 most backward districts (out of a total of 640).It is one of the 34 districts in Uttar Pradesh currently receiving funds from the Backward Regions Grant Fund Programme (BRGF).

Rihand Dam is the largest multi-purpose project of Uttar Pradesh (UP), India. The dam was constructed on the river Rihand (Tributary of the Son River) near village Pipri in Sonbhadra district of UP . In 1964, while inaugurating the Rihand Dam in Singrauli, the First Prime minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru promised to turn the region into the Switzerland of India. The concrete dam is 934 m long and 91 m high. The water is stored in Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar reservoir which spreads over an area of 130 sq. km. (466 sq. km when full) and collects 10,608 m cu m of water. Water from Rihand enter into the reservoir. The Rihand project has been completed in 1966 with total cost of 375 million rupees.

Renukeshwar Mahadev Temple is situated inRenukoot in Sonbhadra district, Uttar Pradesh. It is located adjoining the Rihand River which is also called Renu River, from where this temple got its name. The temple is dedicated to Mahadev or LordShiva. It is one of the most frequented spots in Renukoot. The temple was built by Birla Group in the year 1972.
After undergoing many changes since, this Birla temple in Renukoot looks stunningly beautiful. The main entrance welcomes you with incredible carving that presents Sun god on the chariot. The second gate presents stone carvings of elephants at either side. The sculptures in the temple are fine specimen of the artisanship involved in the making. When former Indian Prime Minister Pt.Jawaharlal Nehru came for the inauguration of Rihand Dam, G.D. Birla and J.R.D Tata accompanied him. Nehru asked them to set up an industry here. G.D. Birla agreed and set up Hindalco Industries Limited in 1963. Pt.Nehru asked GD Birla to develop it as a mini Switzerland of India.[citation needed] This was the foundation of Renukoot. Renukoot used to be in Mirzapur district which was later split up into Sonebhadra and Mirzapur. Renukoot falls into the Sonebhadra district now. The area of Vindhyachal near the north-western part of the area are also known for many religious hills and historic caves and temples. The Chunar Fort, dating 50 BC, is on the way to Varanasi from Renukoot, less than five hours drive.
