Taevaskoja - a special nature site in Estonia (4K video)
Taevaskoja in Southern Estonia (Põlvamaa) is arguably one of the most beautiful nature sites in Estonia. It's just a short ride south of Tartu. There you'll find large and small Taevaskoda - sandstone cliffs by the Ahja river. Hiking trails in sandy pine woods wind up and down on the banks of the river, bridges let you cross it. The trails are well maintained, stairs help you climb the steepest slopes. You can also take a raft ride on the river (upstream of the dam there is a picturesque lake in the woods between the cliffs). Taevaskoja is a popular sightseeing destination. Many ancient myths make this location mysterious. A trademark of Taevaskoja is kingfisher (jäälind). You just might get lucky and get a glimpse of this colorful and rare bird. Tour to Kuressaare, the capital of Estonian island
Our next destination was the most significant settlement on the island. Kuressaare is home to several SPA hotels, a beautiful but small old city, and the most preserved Knights fortress in Estonia. You can spend a day in Kuressaare visiting the history museum in the fort and walking around and having lunch on the main street of the city. After a recent renovation, it became very welcoming and pleasant to spend time.

Explore the Medieval Old Town of Tallinn, Estonia - Walk to Town Hall Square & 14th Century Castles
Step into the past with the gem of the Baltic Sea, Tallinn. The capital city of Estonia, walking the streets of Old Town in Tallinn is like a step back in time. With records indicating human population as far back as 5,000 years, it grew into one of the most significant medieval ports for trade during the 14th-16th centuries. In fact, it's Old Town is one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in Europe with a myriad of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Given it's long standing status as a port city, Tallinn is a common port of call for several cruise lines sailing around the Scandinavian countries of northern Europe. We visited while on board Royal Caribbean's Voyager of the Seas, but opted not to pay for any of the shore excursion tours. The port is approximately a 15-minute walk from the city itself, with the route well marked. You won't get lost... at least not until you're in the narrow streets of Old Town, which is where we spend most of this walking tour. If you've got GPS, you'll be fine though. We recorded the walk back to port at the tail end of this video, so you can see for yourself.
Just walking the streets is interesting, with most tours you purchase already going where you'd be wandering (outside of Old Town is another story). Town Hall Square is one of the common locations visited, as well as churches, cathedrals, and castle towers. Even exploring randomly, they're around every corner. All that said, it is a lot of walking on mostly uneven, cobblestone roads, with a number of hills surround certain castles. You will get tired. Though it's all tourist prices, there's plenty of seating at the dozens of restaurants and cafes at Town Hall Square.

Põltsamaa's stone fortress was constructed on the banks of the river in 1272. Between 1570 and 1578 it was the residence of Livonia's King Magnus. Repeatedly pillages, the castle was rebuilt by Woldemar Johann von Lauw in the 18th century as a grand rococo-style palace. The castle, and the church built into its cannon tower, burnt down in 1941. The church was restored by 1952, and the castle ruins came under preservation during the 1970s.

By the legend the lake (Pullijärve means Bull Elk Lake) was named after the bull elk that was killed by the wolves on the ice of the lake. Our own legend has happy ending. “And if the bull is still alive, you can see it occasionally riding the boat on the lake…”

Dozens of Zoo Animals Murdered in One Night.
In 1969 two boys sneaked into Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and slaughtered dozens of animals in the petting zoo area. @backroadstourist visits the site where this happened and talks about the silver lining from this tragedy.
