HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM PENN RAIL VIDEOS!

In the summer of 2009, Penn Rail Videos ventured into the Great Lakes state to attend the railroading extravaganza, Train Festival 2009. This video is just about all the good footage we have of Nickel Plate Road S-2 Class Berkshire #765, operating between Owosso and Alma, Michigan. We didn't catch her running north to much, but we have a good amount of the 765 headed back to Owosso. This prompted the title Steam to Owosso title. Where ever the big 2-8-4 goes, it always puts on a grand show, just like the one you'll be treated to in this video. The sound of that melodic yet commanding whistle will echo across the flatlands of Michigan, and maybe send chills up your spine! So after you've filled your belly with some delicious turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, why not treat yourself to some desert? That's what this Thanksgiving Day special is for, because we're guaranteeing that it's sweeter than any pumpkin pie you'll eat today.

This video is our way of saying Thank you to our viewers. We are so glad you enjoy watching our videos, and are grateful that you like them enough to hit that like button, and even subscribe to our channel. It's been a long bumpy road these past 6 years, and we hope to bring you more videos as the years continue to roll on.

If you know someone that is a train fanatic, then tell them about our Facebook page or our YouTube page. I'm sure they'll be glad you told 'em.

Owosso - Downtown River View & History

In this video you are looking north from downtown off the Main Street Bridge in Owosso, Michigan. The river is the Shiawassee River - one of the few rivers in the Northern Hemisphere that flows north. In the upper left is Curwood Castle, which was built during 1922 and 1923 by Owosso native and world-renowned author, James Oliver Curwood. The great room of the castle was used by Curwood to entertain guests, and the castle's largest turret served as Curwood's writing studio. Curwood was a best-selling author of thirty-three novels, and the first author to make a million dollars from movies. More than 190 movies, short films and TV shows have been made of Curwood's books and stories, including The Bear. Curwood Castle is now a museum that contains period antiques, and Curwood books, photos, and movie posters. It also exhibits memorabilia from the life of another one of Owosso's great native sons, Thomas E. Dewey.

Owosso's Thomas E. Dewey, of course, was the famous lawyer, author, mob-busting District Attorney of New York City, three term Governor of New York State, and the Republican presidential nominee in 1944 and 1948. He is revered for running one of the most remarkably honest and effective state government administrations in history. He also passed America's first state law that banned discrimination in hiring.

Just south of Curwood Castle is Comstock Cabin. It is Owosso's first permanent dwelling, which was built in 1836 by Judge Elias Comstock. Comstock Cabin also now serves as a museum that holds period antiques.

On the south side of the Shiawassee River Walking and Bicycle Bridge is the Shiawassee Arts Council Gallery. (The white building on the left side of the screen.) The gallery exhibits two original oil masterpieces, and one original colored pencil masterpiece, by Owosso native Frederick Carl Frieseke - a man who, during his lifetime, became America's best known painter internationally and is today regarded as one of history's greatest artists. The gallery also exhibits and sells prints, original works of dozens of other artists, holds art classes, competitions, and has exhibitions scheduled throughout the year. The grounds surrounding the Gallery include the sculpture Renewal by Louis Marinaro.

One block to the west is the Shiawassee District Library Owosso, a Carnegie Library which contains another masterpiece, this one by another Owosso native and world-renown artist, Alice R. Fisher. The library also displays a magnificent bust of Owosso native, congressman and senator Charles A. Towne - The Cicero of the Senate and the only person to have served in the U. S. Congress from two different states.

The large brown brick building across the river is the old Owosso Armory - the second armory to have been built in Owosso. Since the 1860s, thousands of servicemen and women from Owosso have met the call and contributed greatly to defend America. Over the years, the Owosso Armory has also served as an entertainment venue and hosted many nationally-prominent swing and rock 'n roll bands.

Behind the Owosso Armory is the Owosso Middle School, which originally served as Owosso High School - a school that has educated nearly one hundred people from Owosso whose lives have made national and/or international impact - including a Nobel Prize winner, a Peabody Award winner, an Emmy Award winner, a Maxwell Award winner, a dozen world-renowned scientists, five university presidents, three generals, two admirals, famous athletes, radio and TV stars in the U. S. and Europe, famous ministers and a famous Rabbi, the originator of the homecoming tradition that spread to nearly all colleges and high schools throughout the United States, etc. Plus Owosso has two governors, a Medal of Honor winner, a Pulitzer Prize winner, the first woman to obtain a commercial chauffeur's license, a Miss Michigan, the designer of the Jefferson Nickel, a Playmate of the Month, a rock star, an American who was Germany's Woman of the Year, famous journalists and a cartoonist, over thirty-five best selling, award-winning and/or classic authors, several captains of industry, etc. All of this and much more from a small city of slightly over 14,000 citizens that is nearly surrounded by agriculture.

Along the banks of the river behind the Owosso Middle School is the Mitchell Amphitheater, which hosts concerts throughout each summer.

There is something very special about Owosso, Michigan.

Doing some van camping in towns the cities and towns around Michigan. I had some technical difficulties and lost a lot of video footage so this video is a bit disjointed. Owosso - 1225 Steam Engine Train - South Cedar Street Crossing

An excursion run leaving Owosso, Michigan, late in the afternoon on November 28, 2008. The train is pulled by the 800,000 pound (including tender) Pere Marquette 1225 locomotive ― the largest operating steam engine locomotive in Michigan. Steven Spielberg's production company filmed the exterior sights and sounds of the 1225 for the computer rendering of the movie, Polar Express, and Lionel Model Trains has also recorded the sounds of the 1225 for its new electric toy model train, The 1225 ― the namesake of Owosso's 1225.

Owosso, Michigan, is the headquarters of the Steam Railroading Institute, which includes a museum and other facilities. The institute's 3.5 acre grounds also hold a roundhouse, the Pere Marquette 1225, the 82,000 pound Flagg Coal Company steam switch engine, the 136,000 pound Mississippian steam locomotive (under restoration), plus many train cars and other rolling stock from railroads in the United States and Canada.

The Owosso-based Steam Railroading Institute was the location of TrainFestival 2009, which was celebrated from July 24th thru July 26th, 2009. The festival drew approximately 36,000 visitors to Owosso from around the world. On display were additional steam-era equipment, including the 1225's sister steam locomotive - Nickel Plate Road's 765 - and The Southern Pacific Number 4449: The Daylight.

Owosso, Michigan, is also the headquarters of the Great Lakes Central Railroad, which provides freight service to Northern and Southern Michigan, and chartered passenger rail service. The Great Lakes Central Railroad will soon be providing daily commuter rail passenger service in Michigan as well.

Great Lakes Central 10th Anniversary GP35 #393!

It’s April 13th 2016, and we are at Osmer Michigan watching the Great Lakes Central Railroad bring down their interchange for the Ann Arbor Railroad. In the lead of this train is a special locomotive, GP35 number 393. The GLC 393 was recently repainted into a “10th anniversary” scheme commemorating 10 years of serving the great lakes region. This is its first day of service since being repainted, and its first trip to Ann Arbor to interchange with the Ann Arbor Railroad.
As the light fades they prepare to clear out of the way for the Ann Arbor Railroad. In addition to the 393, a pair of GP38-2’s and two other former Ann Arbor Railroad GP35’s were in this consist.
GLC 393 was built in 1964 as Ann Arbor 393. In 1982 the 393 went to the Tuscola and Saginaw Bay Railroad, where it served until 2006 when the Great Lakes Central Railroad took over the TSBY. Up until this year it had worn its TSBY blue and yellow paint scheme, which was most certainty showing its age.
When this unit was stripped down for its repaint, its true colors were shown with remnants of Ann Arbor Railroad Orange and the “ferry and the fog” logo. The special scheme the unit now wears includes the GLC blue and white on the front half of the unit, and then a silver and blue near “reverse” of the blue and white on the rear half. On the side of the unit the slogan “Serving the great lakes region since 2006” can be read.
The Great Lakes Central railroad was formed in 2006 as a new operator of the Tuscola and Saginaw Bay Railroad and other various lines. Since the new railroad was launched many positive changes have been made. In this time GLC has done things such as find additional customers, improve track conditions, and of course brought a fresh look to Michigan’s largest regional railroad.
After the Great Lakes Central Power is in the clear, the Ann Arbor Railroad takes their turn to grab their train and then proceed south.
As the Ann Arbor Railroad rolls south, the Great Lakes Central crew swaps FREDS with their train, and then they will start their moves.
For our final view, the GLC 385 leads the way north as the 5 unit consist heads for Owosso.

About 1225: Pere Marquette 1225, the largest and most impressive locomotive in the Steam Railroading Institute's collection is the largest operating steam locomotive in Michigan. Built in October of 1941 by the Lima Corporation for the Pere Marquette Railway, 1225 was designed for fast-freight service. Most of 1225's short career in freight service was spent hauling steel and wartime freight between Michigan's factories and northern Indiana steel mills. In 1941, the construction cost for the locomotive was $200,000 or roughly $2.5 million by today's standards. Since its restoration and subsequent entrance into passenger service, approximately $1 million has been spent over the last 30 years to keep the locomotive up and running.

The locomotive is one of thirty-nine 2-8-4 Berkshire types ordered by the Pere Marquette Railway. The 2-8-4 classification refers to the wheel arrangement of 1225. It has a 2-wheel pony truck up front to guide the larger set of 8 driving wheels into curves, and a 4- wheel trailing truck to support the weight of the boiler's massive firebox. 1225 is sixteen feet tall, 101 feet long with a combined engine and tender weight of 400 tons. It produces 3000 horsepower and in the 1940s, was able to pull one hundred loaded freight cars at sixty miles per hour. It takes about eight hours to generate a full head of steam on the locomotive's boiler, which in turn operates at 245 pounds per square inch. The tender holds 22 tons of coal and 22,000 gallons of water, consuming one ton of coal for every twelve miles and 150 gallons of water per mile. The Pere Marquette Railway merged with the Chesapeake & Ohio in 1947 ending 1225's corporate run with the PM. The locomotive continued in regular service until its retirement in 1951 in favor of newer and less costly diesel locomotives. In 1957, 1225 was saved from the scrap yard by officials at Michigan State University who sought an outdoor monument to commemorate the steam-era. In 1969, a band of students set out to restore the locomotive to operable condition but eventually lost favor with university administrators who grew tired of looking at a torn-down locomotive on their property. As a result, the growing team of MSU rail enthusiasts began searching for of a new home and in 1983, 1225 was moved to the site of the former Ann Arbor Railroad's steam shop. Restoration work continued until 1988 when the locomotive was reborn and ready for service, making it the largest operating steam locomotive in Michigan. Today, former PM 1225 is used for excursion service and during other special events to help educate the public about steam railroading in Michigan and the greater United States.
