🗺️ Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kapiti Coast - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year
Day 71: Today we are checking out the walks in Queen Elizabeth Park along the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand! Join us for a free thing to do on the Kapiti Coast!
Yesterday - Day 70 -
Tomorrow – Day 72 –
About this video:
Today we are checking out an awesome free thing to do on the Kapiti Coast, walking in Queen Elizabeth Park. We head to Queen Elizabeth Park in Kapiti which is just off the main highway in New Zealand to walks through rolling sand dunes with regenerating vegetation on them.
Along the sand dunes in Queen Elizabeth Park in Kapiti is a long stretching beach with awesome views of Kapiti Island out to sea. We head down to the beach to capture some photos and get some awesome views around Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kapiti Coast.
After struggling our way back up onto the sand dunes in Queen Elizabeth Park, we continue on the loop back around to the start with our shoes full of sand but still feeling epic after our walk in Queen Elizabeth Park in Kapiti.
Our day ends with a barbeque back at Moana Lodge in Plimmerton where we are staying for a couple of days as we explore the Kapiti Coast and the Wellington suburbs.
So what do you think of Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kapiti Coast? Is Queen Elizabeth Park somewhere you would stop off on your way to Wellington?

Otaki to Blenheim New Zealand Campervan Hire
Where's Otaki you say? It's on the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand just slightly north of Wellington and where the Air New Zealand Crazy about Rugby Campervans got to experience Byron's Holiday Park and Camping Ground at Otaki Beach. Byron's is a great place to stay if you're planning on a New Zealand campervan hire trip around New Zealand. There's so much stuff to do there and if we hadn't had an itinerary to stick to we'd definitely have taken advantage of the pool, sauna, restaurants and playground. You're never too old for a swing!
The campers departed Byron's Resort and headed down the North Island's West Coast. If you ever embark on a New Zealand motorhome hire trip you really should venture down the West Coast of the North Island - the scenery is just spectacular.
On this leg of the journey, the campers arrived in Windy Wellington and those on board quickly set about jumping off the wharf into the harbour. Remember this is in the middle of winter and without wetsuits! See they really are crazy.
To ensure there was a bit of culture added, they visited Te Papa Museum (which is definitely worth a look) and tested out the new Z fuel stations formally known as Shell. These guys have stations right throughout the country and for our economical diesel campervans are a great refuelling stop.
While waiting for the campervans first ferry trip thanks to Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferry, and to fill in time, there was a bit of car park rugby to be played. Once all ten Crazy About Rugby Campervans were set and ready to go on the ferry, the maiden journey across the Cook Straight and beautiful Queen Charlotte Sound began. You should see what ten campervans on a ferry look like.
If you're ever thinking about renting a motorhome in New Zealand it's well worth grabbing a bit of fresh air and see breeze while journeying from the North to the South Island on the Cook Strait ferry. You mighty even see a few dolphins too.
After a few hours they arrived in Blenheim at dusk. What a day it was and, if you want, you can take a peek at the footage.

There’s a reason why so many people travel to New Zealand from overseas, just to experience our rich and biodynamic environment, filled with some of the most incredible bird life in the world.
I’ve heard first hand stories of people spending thousands of dollars just to witness some of our flying and flightless wonders, and it piqued my curiosity just to find out why.
Graciously lying just 5km off the North Island’s west coast sits Kapiti Island, arguably New Zealand’s , and one of the worlds, most biodynamically rich nature reserves, and it just so happens to be right in my backyard.
It was my mission to photograph and film as many native bird species I could come across, and lets just say, Kapiti Island certainly delivered.
We set up camp in one of Kapiti’s stunning glamping tents, greeted by one of our many birds of prey, the Kahu, or more commonly known as the Swamp Harrier. Patrolling a good 2 square kilometres of forest, the Kahu put on a good show for us, filmed at 100 frames per second.
We’d set upon our mission up to the highest point of Kapiti Island, passing some of the resident Takahe that live on the island, followed by a Toutouwai, or North Island Robin, who’d prey on insects from the scuffing of our footsteps.
We had Weka prey on our food, almost dog like with their confidence.
And of course, for me this was a hero of the trip, a Kaka, the clown of the forest.
Generally heard before they’re seen, the Kaka can be found all over Wellington, thanks to the conservation efforts of the Zealandia Eco sanctuary, and the work they do here on Kapiti Island keeping it predator and pest free. Related to the larger alpine Parrot the Kea, the Kaka is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular forest birds.
Reaching the very top of Kapiti Island, we saw more Weka, and even got shot of a Kereru, our clumsy yet gracious wood pigeon.
As night settled in, the little blue penguins made home under the deck of the cabins, and we set off for a dusk adventure, lucky enough to get a short glimpse of our national hero, the North Island little spotted kiwi.
it was really special to see first hand the way that our conservation efforts have allowed our eco system to flourish, and like a time capsule, Kapiti island is a real representation of what life was once like here in New Zealand.
