Places to see in ( Douglas - UK )

Places to see in ( Douglas - UK )

Douglas is the capital and largest town of the Isle of Man . Douglas is located at the mouth of the River Douglas, and on a sweeping bay of two miles. The River Douglas forms part of the town's harbour and main commercial port. The town is the Island's main hub for business, finance, legal services, shipping, transport, shopping, and entertainment. The annual Isle of Man TT motorcycle races start and finish in Douglas.

Douglas was a small settlement until it grew rapidly as a result of links with the English port of Liverpool in the 18th century. Further population growth came in the following century, resulting during the 1860s in a staged transfer of the High Courts, the Lieutenant Governor's residence, and finally the seat of the legislature, Tynwald, to Douglas from the ancient capital, Castletown.

Douglas is on the east of the island near the confluence of the two rivers Dhoo and Glass forming the Douglas. At Douglas, the river flows through the quay and into Douglas Bay. A gently sloping valley runs inland. Hills lie to the north-west and south-east. The town is surrounded by several other smaller towns and villages, most notably Onchan to the north (which forms a conurbation with Douglas) and Union Mills to the west.

Douglas is the hub of the island's bus network, with regular services to Port Erin, Peel and Ramsey, as well as various local bus services. The town also has the termini of the two main railway lines on the island: the steam railway to Port Erin and the electric tramway to Ramsey. It is also the home of the ferry terminal, from where the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company operate regular services to Heysham, Dublin, Belfast and Liverpool.

Douglas has a number of attractions and items of interest:

The Tower of Refuge is a small castle-like shelter built upon Conister Rock in Douglas Bay as a sanctuary for shipwrecked sailors. Construction was instigated by Sir William Hillary, founder of the RNLI.

Douglas Head is home to the Grand Union Camera Obscura which has recently undergone restoration and is open to the public during the summer months. Other artefacts and remnants of Victorian Tourism can still be found on walks around the area.

The horse-drawn trams that run along the promenade from the Sea Terminal to the Manx Electric Railway station from spring to early autumn.

Steam trains run 15 miles from Douglas railway station to Port Erin in the south of the Island.

The Grandstand on Glencrutchery Road marks the start and finish of the annual TT Races and various other motorsports.

The Gaiety Theatre and the Villa Marina are popular venues for all manner of stage acts: from rock music to comedy to drama to ballet. The Gaiety Theatre is one of the best surviving examples of the work of Frank Matcham and dates from 1900. Both venues have recently undergone extensive renovations.

The award-winning Manx Museum in Kingswood Grove contains many of the most important cultural artefacts relating to the Manx nation. Highlights include the Calf of Man Crucifixion Stone, the Pagan Lady's necklace from the Viking excavations at Peel Castle, and the largest collection of Archibald Knox materials. It also houses the National Art Collection, and the National Archives.

The Jubilee clock is a street clock built in 1887 to mark the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign. It is located at the foot of Victoria Street and Loch Promenade. The location also marked the lower terminus of the Upper Douglas Cable Tramway

Other buildings of interest include Isola restaurant, in John Street, and the Douglas Hotel, on the North Quay, both merchants' houses from the mid-18th century; the Castle Mona (formerly the Quality Hotel), a seaside mansion built by John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl in 1804, currently awaiting refurbishment; and the Loch Promenade, a curving terrace of former boarding houses dating from the 1870s.

Isle of Man | British Crown Dependency | Summer Getaway | 3-date Itinerary

After a long and cold winter,
'Tis summer that has knocked on the doors..
Off I embark on a new adventure,
Eager to discover new shores

This summer, I am off on a trip to the Isle of Man, a small island in the Irish sea tucked between the mainlands of UK and Ireland.
This gorgeous tiny island is a British crown dependency, but not technically a part of the UK.

Here are some interesting facts about Man:

1) It hosts the annual TT races, one of the most prestigious motorcycle racing in the world.

2) It has the Oldest Continuous Parliament in the World, supposedly 1000 years old with its unbroken existence!!

3) The Island has its own language, Manx Gaelic, currently endangered, deriving its roots from the Celtic group of languages.

4) It is the only country to have the tag of UNESCO Biosphere region, for the entire geographical landscape.

5) It houses the Laxey Water Wheel or the beloved Lady Isabella, the largest working water wheel in the world.

6) It is home to the native Loaghton sheep, known to grow 4, sometimes even 6 massive horns and the tail-less Manx cat.

7) The old capital city of Castletown has houses built with tiny fairy doors to welcome fairies or the Little People

8) It’s considered bad luck to say r-a-t on the Isle Of Man, people call them long-tails instead.

Onchan - Isle of Man

Onchan - Isle of Man by Drone

Music by Anthony Cubbon - Please check out his channel -

Drone footage using my dji phantom 4 to capture the beauty of the Isle of Man, covering Landscapes, shore lines and towns.

Onchan is a village in the parish of Onchan on the Isle of Man. It is at the north end of Douglas Bay. Although administratively a village, it has the second largest population on the island, after Douglas, with which it forms a conurbation.

The Isle of Man is located in the middle of the northern Irish Sea, almost equidistant from England, Northern Ireland, Scotland (closest), and Wales (farthest). It is 52 kilometres (32 mi) long and, at its widest point, 22 kilometres (14 mi) wide. It has an area of around 572 square kilometres (221 sq mi). Besides the island of Mann itself, the political unit of the Isle of Man includes some nearby small islands: the seasonally inhabited Calf of Man, Chicken Rock on which stands an unmanned lighthouse, St Patrick's Isle and St Michael's Isle. The last two of these are connected to the main island by permanent roads/causeways.

Ranges of hills in the north and south are separated by a central valley. The northern plain, by contrast, is relatively flat, consisting mainly of deposits from glacial advances from western Scotland during colder times. There are more recently deposited shingle beaches at the northernmost point, the Point of Ayre. The island has one mountain higher than 600 metres (2,000 ft), Snaefell, with a height of 620 metres (2,034 ft). According to an old saying, from the summit one can see six kingdoms: those of Mann, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, and Heaven. Some versions add a seventh kingdom, that of the sea, or Neptune

Explore Groudle Glen With Maggie The Dog - Isle of Man 🇮🇲

Groudle - Isle of Man by Drone

Groudle, a glen on the outskirts of Onchan on the Isle of Man, is formed in a valley leading to the sea at the small port of the same name. It was a remote hamlet boasting only a handful of small cottages until linked to the Manx Electric Railway in 1893, at which time it was developed as a tourist attraction. Originally billed as The Fern Land Of Mona!, the glen was further improved in the late 19th century by the planting of many different types of tree. Whereas most glens are formed naturally, it was a conscious effort by the owners to provide part of the attraction to the Victorian visitor by being able to inspect a wide variety of trees, something which is still evident today. At the beach there were bowling and croquet greens, a mill, crofters' cottages and a bridge accessing the Howstrake Holiday Camp which was on the adjacent headland. At the point where the pack-horse road (now a footpath) crosses the railway line there is an old lime kiln from which the intermediate railway station also takes its name.

At the outer reaches of the glen a small cove was dammed off and a zoo built featuring sea lions and polar bears in 1893 and the remains of this remarkable construction remain in situ today as a testament to the incredible feat[clarification needed] of engineering. To serve the zoo, in 1896 the Groudle Glen Railway was constructed over a three-quarter-mile length from the depths of the glen onto the headland. This resulted in the outer station being named Sea Lion Rocks, a name it still carries today. Described since as the Alton Towers of its day, the glen featured many attractions for the discerning Victorian visitor, from a dance floor and bandstand, to fortune tellers, many stalls, a playground, water wheel (known as the Little Isabella, a reference to the world-famous[citation needed] Laxey Wheel which is a short distance away) and the narrow gauge railway. As trends changed, so did the fortunes of the glen and it never really recovered after World War II, with the railway being the sole surviving attraction. The line closed in 1962 and the glen returned to a tranquil footpath for the next twenty years, at which point the railway was restored by volunteers.

Groudle Glen Railway
The glen itself runs from the Whitebridge in Onchan to the sea at Port Groudle and is still open to the public today, although the majority of the attractions, save for the restored railway, have all but disappeared. The water wheel is extant and the old dance floor was replaced in 1993 with a new bandstand structure. The glen has the only natural canyon on the island, the Lhen Coan, which is Manx Gaelic for Lonely Valley (sometimes rendered inaccurately as Lovely Glen, Lonely Glen, Lovely Valley etc.). In the lower (seaward) section of the glen, which is now in private ownership, were lily ponds that the accessed by the public by a series of winding boarded walkways. Having fallen into disrepair for many years, the ponds were substantially refurbished by the Manx Heritage Trust in 1986 which was deemed to be Heritage Year on the island, but since this time the maintenance has not been kept up and the ponds are not easily accessible. The railway still operates in the summer months and now[when?] has a visitors centre nearby to the old zoo with tea rooms.
