Places to see in ( Okehampton - UK )
Places to see in ( Okehampton - UK )
Okehampton is a town and civil parish in West Devon in the English county of Devon. Okehampton is situated at the northern edge of Dartmoor, Okehampton was founded by the Saxons. The earliest written record of the settlement is from 980 AD as Ocmundtune, meaning settlement by the Ockment, a river which runs through the town. Like many towns in the West Country, Okehampton grew on the medieval wool trade. Notable buildings in the town include the 15th century chapel of St. James and Okehampton Castle
Okehampton was the caput of a large feudal barony, which at the time of the Domesday Book was held by Baldwin FitzGilbert. After his death in 1090 the tenure of the barony is obscure for the next twenty years after which it was held by the heiress Maud d'Avranches until her death in 1173, which passed to her daughter, Hawise de Curci (died 1219), who married Reginald de Courtenay.
Okehampton's location at the edge of the moor means that it has always been a route centre. After years of uncertainty, the A30 trunk road was finally re-routed in 1988 to bypass the town, which had previously acted as a holiday traffic bottleneck at summer weekends. Okehampton railway station is on the former northerly rail route from Exeter to Plymouth via Tavistock. The line from Exeter remains open for freight traffic to and from Meldon Quarry, two miles (3 km) west of Okehampton. In summer, and at weekends throughout the year, the Dartmoor Railway operates a heritage railway service between Okehampton and Meldon Quarry.
Okehampton is surrounded by many smaller villages and towns including the hamlet of Stockley. Notable examples are the villages of South Zeal with its ancient burgage plots, granite thatched cottages and Dartmoor Folk Festival; Belstone, noted for its location on the very outskirts of Dartmoor and links to Agatha Christie's The Sittaford Mystery
( Okehampton - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Okehampton . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Okehampton - UK

West Devon Way: Tor or less...Part 1 Okehampton to Lydford
Part 1 of my adventure in Dartmoor, in which I walked over forty miles from Okehampton to Plymouth over three days in March 2023 using the West Devon Way as a guide. This series is aimed to faithfully show you my experience I had, both good and bad, and how I was feeling throughout the three day trip.
My first stretch delivered Storm Mathis with intense rain, and turbulent cold winds. This led me to make some decisions where I had to divert away from the original route, as I was struggling to read my directions, and the idea of being lost in the moors during bad weather did not seem like a good option on my own. Still I tried to make the best of it, and conserve my energy for Day 2, which would be the biggest walk. I still got to see a few good sights, and ticked off most of the landmarks I wanted to see that day. I may well repeat this route more faithfully in better weather and finally get to see Lyford Gorge!
If you are interested in doing this 37 mile walk please follow the link below for the guide....
Also if you are interested in accommodation I highly recommend the wonderful Castle Inn in Lydford. The food and drink was to die for, and I was well looked after by the friendly staff...
I also met a friendly guy called Alex who helps run a wild camping festival in Somerset called Wild In Us. It sounds excellent and certainly worth checking out...
I hope you enjoy my escapades and calamities, see you in Part 2!

What are most loved towns in the United Kingdom? Determining how much each town in the UK is loved can be tough since there are over a thousand of towns in the country. However, due to popular demand and to satisfy the yearnings of our audience, we have undertaken the pain of researching. It is that research that produced this list of the 10 most loved towns in the UK.
The ranking is a product of what the majority of the people polled feel about their towns and other towns they know one thing or the other about. Yet, we are sure of one thing. You too would join those whose votes rank these towns as the most loved towns in the UK.
10. Dunkeld, Scotland
Let’s set the ball rolling with Dunkeld a town in Perth and Kinross. Yes, we begin in Scotland. The town is located on the north bank of the River Tay and opposite Birnam. Dunkeld is frequently referred to as the Gateway to the Highlands because of its proximity to the geological Highland Boundary Fault.
This is one of the most loved towns in the UK because it’s a popular holiday area in Scotland. It’s also well connected by road and rail to all the major centers in Scotland and the other parts of the UK. Though the town with an estimated population of 1,330 may be relatively small, it’s also much loved.
9. Selby, England
From there to the English town of Selby. This town is in the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. Selby is a market town and civil parish. With its status as a town council, it is 14 miles south of York on the River Ouse. The town with a population of 14,731 is one of the most loved towns in England.
The former town of a large shipbuilding industry was also an important port on the Selby Canal. Apart from its being a market town, it’s also loved for its picturesque villages and affordable much lower house prices.
8. Usk, Wales
Next, we go to Wales to find the town of Usk in Monmouthshire. This town and community is 10 miles northeast of Newport and located on the River Usk. The town with a population of 2,834 has been listed among the best places to live in Wales, by the annual guide of the Best Places to Live in The Sunday Times.
One of the factors that brought Usk to the list and this one is the extraordinary community exhibited by the residents of the town. They have a lot of community groups such as Usk in Bloom. Usk is loved for its history of success in UK competitions. The independently-run museum and sports groups are also a reason to love this town.
7. Frome, England
Let us briefly touch down in England to consider Frome, the seventh on our list. The moment it was listed among one of the “Best Places to Live in Britain,” we knew the town would be one of the 10 most loved towns in the UK. Now, our research has proved true. This town and civil parish in eastern Somerset is about 13 miles south of Bath.
The largest town in the Mendip District of Somerset is loved for being welcoming, charming, and vibrant. As a part of the parliamentary constituency of Somerton and Frome, it has a wealth of history, culture, and natural beauty. People from outside the town love it for its tranquility and antiquity.

OKEHAMPTON CASTLE | Exploring Devon's LARGEST CASTLE!
Okehampton Castle, located on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon, England, is a significant historical site with origins dating back to the Norman period.
The castle was established shortly after the Norman Conquest, around 1068, by Baldwin FitzGilbert, a Norman nobleman, to assert control over the surrounding area. Initially built as a motte-and-bailey fortification, it was one of the largest and most important castles in Devon, serving as the administrative center for the region.
In the 13th century, the castle was transformed into a grand fortified manor house by the Courtenay family, who were influential landowners in the region. They expanded the castle with the addition of a stone keep, a great hall, and various domestic buildings, turning it into a luxurious residence.
The castle's strategic location and impressive defenses made it a symbol of power and prestige. However, by the late 15th century, the castle fell into decline as the Courtenay's shifted their primary residence elsewhere. Okehampton Castle eventually became a romantic ruin, admired for its picturesque setting amidst the lush Devon countryside.
