KOSOVO IS (NOT) SERBIA? 🇽🇰

Travel Documentary Kosovo. 🇽🇰 Is Kosovo still a war zone? Would we recommend you to travel there? Is it safe? We share with you our first-hand experience of Kosovo country.

Currently, the media are constantly reporting conflicts between ethnic Albanians and ethnic Serbs …

Yet, apart from these inherent tensions, there is also a very normal life in a very captivating country, which is worth discovering. Dua Lipa and Rita Ora, to name just a few examples, are proud representatives of their birth country Kosovo.

In our travel video, we shed light on this very young country that declared itself independent from Serbia in 2008, even though Serbia still considers Kosovo part of its territory. Most European countries, the United States, Australia, etc. recognize Kosovo’s independence, but a significant number of others do not (such as Serbia, China, Russia etc.).

Join us for a deep dive into Kosovo’s capital Pristina and the surrounding area. We bring in the shadows of the past (Kosovo War, Kosovo Liberation Army UÇK etc.) and throw light on present day life. Explore with us interesting (majority Albanian and Serb) villages, beautiful landscapes, unique people – and gain many insights.

We take you on a journey to a land that is still unknown to many! You will be intrigued.

Gracanica in Kosovo - An overview - A walk with many memories from 22 years ago - Thoughts on Peace

During my work trip I spent time in the small village where I had lived for several years shortly after the end of the Kosovo conflict. I am trying to provide an actual picture, keeping memories to a minimum. The two decades since my time have witnessed many changes, not all of them to the best. Reflections on the impermanence of things and that conflict and war look very different if they affect you directly, instead of watching things on a TV screen. But keep in mind, this is a travel video, not an attempt to delve into historical details. Hope you enjoy!

About Pristina: Pristina (UK: /ˈpriːʃtɪnə, prɪʃˈtiːnə/, US: /ˈprɪʃˈtɪnɑː/) is the capital of Kosovo and seat of Pristina Municipality and Pristina District. The largest city by area and population of Kosovo, Pristina is predominantly populated by Albanians and consitutes the second-largest Albanian-inhabited capital after Tirana, Albania. Inhabited by humans since prehistoric times, the area of Pristina was home to several Illyrian peoples. King Bardyllis of the Dardanians brought various tribes together in the 4th century BC and established the Dardanian Kingdom. The heritage of the classical era is represented by the settlement of Ulpiana, which was considered as one of the most influental Roman cities in the Balkan Peninsula. After the Roman Empire was divided into a western and an eastern half, the area remained within the Byzantine Empire between the 5th and 9th centuries. In the middle of the 9th century, it was ceded to the First Bulgarian Empire, before falling again under Byzantine occupation in the early 11th century and then in the late 11th century to the Second Bulgarian Empire. In the late Middle Ages, Pristina was an important town in Medieval Serbia constituting the royal estate of Serbian kings. Following the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans, Pristina became an important mining and trading center due to its strategic position near the rich mining town of Novo Brdo. The city was known for its trade fairs and items, such as goatskin and goat hair as well as gunpowder. The first mosque in Pristina was built in the late 14th century while under Serbian rule. // View of Pristina, Goddess on the Throne, Newborn Monument, Kosovo Museum, Clock Tower, Great Hamam and Imperial Mosque and Skanderbeg Monument. Chasing Kosovo WATERFALLS!! Kosova Raki for BREAKFAST at White Drin Waterfall | Peja, Kosovo

🏨 HOTEL DUKAGJINI:
🏨 RESORT UJEVARA E DRINIT:
🌎 TRAVEL MEDIA EU:

The sixth day of my epic road trip through Albania and Kosovo kicked off in the gorgeous city of Peja, Kosovo! Come join me as I drink some raki for breakfast and then explore the White Drin River and waterfall in Peja, Kosovo!

🇽🇰 DAVID’S BEEN HERE KOSOVO & ALBANIA SHIRTS:
🚗 RENTAL CAR ALBANIA:

My day began about 30 minutes outside of Kosovo at the beautiful White Drin River. There’s a hotel right next to the river. I couldn’t wiat to have some breakfast, hike the area, and do some exploring!

We had a 30-minute hike around the river ahead of us. The rushing river goes through Albania and Kosovo. We approached the waterfall and got hit with the mist! It drenched us! The water comes from the mountains, so it’s super cold!

As we continued on, we reached a water fountain, where I took a drink. There’s nothing like drinking fresh mountain water!

Then, we continued to climb up some steps along the mountain. Re reached a bridge that crosses the White Drin right above a set of rushing falls. I had never been to a place like this before!

The path was super narrow and really intense, as it’s right above the falls!

Then, we continued along the path to the entrance of the second-largest cave in Kosovo. It’s called Sleeping Beauty Cave and is full of tunnels. Unfortunately, it was closed, but it’s open between April and October.

We began the hike back, and Erjan found a wild fire salamander. It’s a super beautiful creature! I had never seen one out in the wild!

We made it back to the hotel, Resort Ujevara e Drinit. The hotel’s restaurant, Moncafe, looks right over the river. It was so beautiful and peaceful, and the sound of the river is so soothing!

Erjan and I started with some espresso and paired it with raki, the way true Albanians and Kosovar people start their day! I loved the aroma. Most tourists probably won’t do this, but it’s the best way to immerse yourself in the local culture.

From there, we hopped in the car to head to Rugova Valley to do some ziplining! There are mountains, waterfalls, and canyons there. The area reminded me of Valbona and Montenegro!

Our first stop was a waterfall along the highway, which goes through the mountains. It was beautiful! There’s a restaurant right on the river with a sort of picnic area right on the river banks. It’s beautiful and relaxing, but it’s also cold! The Peja area is stunningly beautiful!

I crossed some of the rocks in the river and then we headed back up to the car. We reached another waterfall, and nearby we found a vendor selling honey, drinks, and raki bottles made from tree branches!

Unfortunately, the ziplining was closed, so we headed back to Peja to find more adventures! The drive to and from the city was absolutely gorgeous. The mountain scenery was unreal! You can hike and go rock climbing here!

We made it back to Hotel Dukagjini, our accommodations, and walked around the center of town. We saw the main square and pedestrian street and the I Love Peja sign.

What an eventful morning in and around Peja!

Foreigner exploring KOSOVO - what could go wrong?

Hi everyone! This is the ninth video in my Balkans series (taken before but posted after my Iceland & Greenland series). After noticing the popularity of my other Kosovo videos compared to the other videos on YouTube at the time, I decided to run a poll on YouTube, where I asked if people would want to see unseen footage of my Kosovo trip. The verdict was a resounding 'yes' - hence this extra video! :)

I recently ran a poll on YouTube asking if people would like to see more footage of my trip to Kosovo earlier this year. The result was an overwhelming yes!

To that end, I've put together a short video of previously deleted / unused scenes of me exploring markets in Pristina. As you will see in this video, the hospitality and friendliness of people in this part of the world is first class.

If you like this video, please make sure you watch the other videos in my Balkans playlist which also features more footage of Kosovo. And please subscribe to this channel!

Kosovo STREET FOOD Breakfast in DRAGASH VILLAGE!! Driving from Brod to Prizren, Kosova

🏨 HOTEL CENTRUM:
🌎 TRAVEL MEDIA EU:
🇽🇰 DAVID’S BEEN HERE KOSOVO & ALBANIA SHIRTS:

As the fourth day of my Albania/Kosovo trip kicked off, I hit the ground running to explore more of Kosovo! Come along with me as I grab some authentic Kosovo street food for breakfast and then drive from Brod to Prizren!

🚗 RENTAL CAR ALBANIA:

My day began in Dragash village, which is the halfway point between Brod and my next destination, Prizren. My boy Erjan from Travel Media EU and I got an early start at seven a.m. because we had a jam-packed day ahead of us!

I had a hankering for some byrek, so we stopped at a shop called Extra, which sold byrek and lots of other Balkan favorites and coffee. It was a small shop with three tables. I got to watch them make some sweets.

Erjan and I started with some Turkish coffee and two different byreks: one with meat and another with cheese. We had some yogurt on the side. The byrek had been pre-cut into pieces. I loved the dough, which was really unique and tasted different from other byreks I’d had.

The meat byrek contained minced meat and was light, flaky, and airy. Meanwhile, the yogurt was liquidy and super tasty. The coffee, byrek, and yogurt went together really well. After you drink your Turkish coffee, you flip your cup over onto your saucer and someone can tell your future by reading the dregs.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have any Kosovo currency on me. Unlike Albania, which uses lekes, in Kosovo, they use Euros. I needed to find an ATM to pay the shop owner! As we hunted for an ATM, we came across a statue of Adem Jashari, one of the founders of the Kosovo Liberation Army, who died in 1998.

We also came across a small market where you can buy household supplies like combs, lighters, batteries, a broom, an axe, and homemade honey. It’s a true local experience in a small town. I found a bank and got my money, and then we continued on to Prizren!

The views we had as we drove along the road to Prizren were unbelievable. The expanses of countryside, farmland, and mountains was just stunning!

Prizren is the country’s second-largest city after the capital, Pristina. After we arrived in town, we passed a massive vegetable market. There were also lots 10-story buildings and lots of advertisements and commercial spaces.

We entered the Old Town. On our right was the Prizren River, which goes through the middle of the city. The road to get to our hotel was very winding and full of slopes. We passed by lots of cafés and hotels along the way. Erjan told me that this is his favorite Kosovar city, and that everything—shopping, restaurants, bars, mosques, churches—is located within walking distance.

We arrived at Hotel Centrum, and I headed up to Room 312. I had a nice, clean bathroom, a closet, desk, TV, two twin beds, and a balcony with an amazing view over Prisren. I could see seven minarets from there!

What a morning! I couldn’t wait to get out and explore Prizren over the next 24 hours!

Hearty KOSOVO FOOD in Gjakova!! Exploring Kosovo's Oldest Bazaar | Gjakova, Kosovo

🥩 HOTEL CARSHIA E JUPAVE:
🌎 TRAVEL MEDIA EU:
🇽🇰 DAVID’S BEEN HERE KOSOVO & ALBANIA SHIRTS:

The fifth day of my epic road trip through Albania and Kosovo began with a drive to Gjakova, Kosovo! Join me as I enjoy some hearty Kosovo food and then explore Kosovo’s oldest bazaar in Gjakova, Kosovo!

🚗 RENTAL CAR ALBANIA:

My day started at Terzijski Bridge, an Ottoman Bridge near Bistražin, between Prizren and Peja. It’s a beautiful medieval bridge that dates back to the 15th century. It’s an awesome example of Ottoman architecture in Kosovo!

My boy Erjan from Travel Media EU and I were both starving, so we set out to grab some food before exploring the city! We stopped at Hotel Carshia e Jupave, a hotel and restaurant in Gjakova that’s all about serving delicious traditional food. It’s Erjan’s favorite restaurant in the city!

In the kitchen, I watched the cooks bake bread and make meatballs, vegetables with meat, and much more!

At our table, we had an amazing-looking meat-and-vegetable tava, meat cooked on a stone, kofta (a meat patty with cheese on top), bread, cheese, and a salad. The meat was unreal, as was the beef tava. The beef was super tender and fell apart in my mouth. It was so juicy!

The beef-and-vegetable tava almost tasted like ajvar because of the red peppers in it. Ajvar is a paste made from red peppers and mashed eggplant. It was so tasty! Then, I tried some of the ajvar with the fluffy bread, which was fantastic. I loved it!

The kofta was nice and medium rare, just the way I like it. I couldn’t get over how good everything was. The best thing to do is to grab some meat, ajvar, and goat cheese with the bread and try it together. It’s unreal!

We finished with some local raki, which was nice and smooth!

Outside, we headed to a nearby café to grab a coffee to wake up after such a filling meal. Then, we headed to Old Bazaar, the oldest and most traditional bazaar in Kosovo. It’s non-stop restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops. This used to be an open-air market but has now been converted into commercial spaces.

The bazaar is huge. It consists of several shops, so there’s a lot to explore. We stopped by an arts and crafts shop where they can make sculptures of your family’s hands! From there, we stopped in a clothing shop with lots of traditional clothes with the Albanian double eagle! From there, we finished up by checking out a beautiful mosque!

What an awesome morning exploring Gjakova!

Manastir Gračanica, Kosovo

Gracanica monastery was built by King Milutin on 1321 and dedicated to Dormition of Virgin Mary. The construction of the monastery began at 1310 and last until 1318 after which being frescoed in the following three years. Historical circumstances, under which the construction of the current church ran, are well documented. The main source of the information’s is the foundation charter of the monastery issued by King Milutin which is entirely preserved on the west wall of the south side of dome. The charter is written in 53 lines and it ends with ornate kings signature and the year 6830, according to byzantine calendar (1321, according to Julian calendar), located in lower right part of the Charter.
Gracanica monastery is located in the settlement with the same name 10 km south of Pristina. Written sources, as well as the destruction of the monastery complex of supporting facilities certainly testify the turbulent history of Gracanica. It is considered that the first time was burgled after the Battle of Maritsa 1371, and mentioned within as a part of long prayer to the Virgin Mary which is been preserved in one manuscript. Monastery was also desecrated in XVIII century, when the notorious Yashar – pasha ordered to strip the lead cladding from the roof and raise the stone slab from the floor for the needs of his constructions in Pristina. During the WWI, more precisely November 1915, Gracanica was burgled by Bulgarians
The time of 14th and 15th century was the period of great spiritual glory of the monastery. About hundred monks lived in Gracanica which developed very intensive spiritual and artistic activities. In the second quarter of the 16th century here it has been the metropolitan center of Novo Brdo, who founded the first printing office within the territory of medieval Serbia 1539. Later, due to the large Ottoman oppression, the monastery was abandoned and the church used for parochial needs.
After the WWII, the monastery was rebuilt by nuns and since then it serves as a nunnery. Today it is populated with 20 nurses engaged with icon painting, embroidery, agriculture and other monastic obedience’s.
The monastery was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1990, and on 13 July 2006 it was placed on UNESCO's World Heritage List under the name of Medieval Monuments in Kosovo as an extension of the Visoki Dečani site which was overall placed on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

Kosovo #1 FAST FOOD DISH!! Qebaptore FOOD TOUR in Peja, Kosovo

🌎 TRAVEL MEDIA EU:
🇽🇰 DAVID’S BEEN HERE KOSOVO & ALBANIA SHIRTS:

My sixth day in Albania and Kosovo continued in beautiful Peja, Kosovo, as I dove into the local food scene! Let’s explore Kosovo’s #1 fast food dish with an epic qebaptore food tour in Peja, Kosovo!

🚗 RENTAL CAR ALBANIA:

I was so pumped to go on this ćevapčići food tour! Ćevapčići is a mincemeat sausage that’s super popular in the Balkans. My boy Erjan from Travel Media EU and I hit the ground running with a stop at Qebaptore Dioni. Inside, we watched them grill up some ćevapčići in their kitchen before taking our seats.

This place is Erjan’s favorite qebaptore in Peja! I opened up the pita bread, stuffed it with the ćevapčići and some cheese! Along with the cheese, we also had cucumbers, tomatoes, and cabbage. The ćevapčići with the cheese and pita was amazing, and I loved it when I added some spice to it. It was so juicy and the bread was phenomenal! Overall, it was one of the best ćevapčićis I’d ever had in my life!

I couldn’t get over how amazing the ćevapčići was, but we still had more to eat! We walked just five doors down to Gazi Qebaptore Restaurant. Their ćevapčići is different because it’s spicy sujuk! Before we ate, we had some Peja beer, which paired with the meat really nicely.

The sujuk was a little spicy and similar to chorizo. It was smoky and juicy, and was amazing with a bit of salt and spice sprinkled on top. They were the perfect combination, especially with the Peja beer!

After the sujuk, we continued down the street to Qebaptore Egzoni. There were so many qebaptore restaurants on this street! There, we had a meatball that was more like a burger, along with tomatoes, cucumbers, cabbage, chilies, pepper seeds, potato salad, and salt.

The meat with cabbage and pepper seeds was outstanding. The peppers were also super spicy, but I’m all about spice! Putting it all in the bread was even better! Then, I washed it all down with a yogurt drink called ajran, which killed the spice in my mouth.

Everything at these places was too good, and everyone was super friendly! From there, we hopped in the car and headed to the bazaar in the center of Peja. There are lots of jewelers at the entrance, and a lot of knockoff clothing shops.

Inside the bazaar, we stopped at Qebaptore Te Agimi. They sell ćevapčići, spicy sausage, ribs, and much more. They had sujuk hanging in the window. We got some veal and cabbage.

It was basically a skirt steak. Mixed with some spicy and cheese red pepper paste and cabbage, it was fantastic. The paste made this dish. It added a creaminess and some heat. I loved it!

What an incredible qebaptore food tour in Peja, Kosovo!

Kashgar's Animal Market: Real Life Arabian Nights!

One of the remotest places on earth - where you can step back in time to a land of fat-tailed sheep, sour yak milk, and two-humped camels. The Arabian Nights, come to life.

If you really want to see what life was like in the 12th century, you have to get up early on a Sunday morning and head out to Kashgar’ s livestock market.

It’s a scene straight out of Marco Polo's field notes - but for the herders and tradesmen who come here to buy and sell, it’s just another working day.

They arrive from all over Xinjiang Province - some with a single sheep or goat, hand-raised since spring. Others can barely keep track of all their animals. The market is set up and open for business in under thirty minutes.

But why stand on the sidelines and watch everyone else making money? Here’s all you need to know to be a Silk Road Animal Trader.

First of all, you should be able to tell the difference between a local sheep and a goat.
Around here, goats usually have hair and straight horns. Sheep are wooly and have long, sad ears. Most importantly, sheep have large tails and hindquarters, often beautifully styled. That’s because an adult sheep can have up to ten pounds of coveted tail fat, a delicacy in Western China.

The local Uighur love mutton, so sheep are very popular – a fact reflected in their price. A healthy sheep can sell for over $100, where a goat is only worth about half that. Just remember – you’re looking for a high nose, long ears, pure wool, big tail, and a wide body.

On to bovines. Yaks are furry, and they don’t know how to moo. They have scary horns and know how to use them, though they’re usually very docile. The local cattle are huge and apparently, quite stubborn.

Horses are pretty straightforward, though they’re expensive. Starting at $300, they cost more than a motorbike. Camels are also easy. This being Asia – they’re all bactrian. They have much more pleasant dispositions than their one-humped Middle Eastern cousins. But they will set you back at least 4 sheep or a horse and 2 calves.

Check out your animals thoroughly and be prepared to bargain hard. Though don’t expect to win – these guys have been at it since they were in grade school. And if you happen to be a woman, they may not know what to do with you.

Once you’ve come to an agreement, seal the deal with a handshake, then pay up. You don’t want anyone around here upset with you.

And then, it’s time to eat.

You’ll find almost every Uighur favorite here. Lagman noodles – hand stretched. Chicken kebabs, served with fresh Uighur bread. Stuffed lamb intestines. Samsas – spicy mutton wrapped in dough. And Polo - rice pilaf – rustic and delicious. Cooked for hours in a blackened cauldron, with shredded carrots, glazed onions, peppers, peas, and butter, mixed by hand.

And of course the all-important mutton. Or you can just skip all those pesky vegetables and have your meat straight up. For dessert there’s Kashgar’s famous melons.

Most of the unsold sheep will head for the coast. The unlucky ones will head back to Kashgar. Just in time for dinner.
