Nogales -A Border City Split in Two

On this episode of FORGOTTEN WORLD we visit NOGALES, Mexico -a quiet little city straddling the Mexican-American border. But there is an older story here, one of openness and division. Nogales started as a railroad outpost in the 1880s. In those days, cross border relations were friendly, so much so, that there was no barrier dividing the city, just a few stone pillars to marked the boundary line through town. Now the town is literally cut-in-half by an impassable border barrier that runs for miles in either direction out of the city limits.

Why Americans Who Can’t Afford America are Moving to THIS City!

What Happens When You Cross the Border Into Mexico?

Crossing the border into Mexico via Mexicali I is fast and easy. Head down to Caesar Chavez Blvd in Calexico and go straight through the last traffic light. You will pass through some new booths that will be used for custom in the future. Then as you pass through the border wall turn left to park at the FMM office. There you will be inspected and get your FMM stamped.

Then proceeded back to the line of traffic crossing under the Mexico sign. The process for us on a weekday morning has always been fast and easy.

NOGALES ARIZONA

NOGALES ARIZONA is located on the US and Mexican border. It is a city in Santa Cruz County, Arizona. The population was 20,837 at the 2010 census and estimated 20,103 in 2019. Nogales forms part of the larger Tucson–Nogales combined statistical area, with a total population of 1,027,683 as of the 2010 Census. The city is the county seat of Santa Cruz County. Due to its location on the border and its major ports of entry, Nogales funnels an estimated $30 billion worth of international trade into Arizona and the United States, per year, in fresh produce and manufactured goods from Mexico and the world through the deep seaport in Guaymas, Sonora, Mexico. This trade helps to support tens of thousands of jobs and the overall economies in Ambos Nogales and throughout the American state of Arizona and the Mexican state of Sonora.
The town is named for the black walnut trees which once grew abundantly in the mountain pass between the cities of Nogales, Arizona, and Nogales, Sonora, and can still be found around the town. The economy of Nogales is heavily dependent on the cross-border trade through its Ports of Entry by produce distributors and American-based manufacturing plants in Nogales, Sonora and throughout the rest of the Mexican states of Sonora and Sinaloa.
The median income for a household in the city was $28,044, and the median income for a family was $24,637. Males had a median income of $24,636 versus $18,403 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,440. About 30.8% of families and 32.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 41.2% of those under age 18 and 32.9% of those age 65 or over.

Mexico Border at Nogales, AZ & Boarder Patrol near Rio Rico

02-15-2015
We found out that most of the Monument was a 67 mile trip on a dirt road, and would take us 2 hours to get to Nogales, AZ. It was every bit of 2 plus hours winding through the mountains overlooking Mexico, and was a fun filled trip. This trip didn't help make us feel any safer for our secured boarders, in fact it was worse. Such a waste of manpower, such a waste of men/women wasting time away. Several times we past boarder patrol personnel doing absolutely nothing. One person appeared to be parked off the road sleeping, another looked like he had a rendezvous with a woman on a four wheeler. She seemed very upset that we were in the vicinity, and he never looked at us while we passed them. Coming from our adventure at Nogales, we decided to take a trip to the boarder, and just like we thought, where the masses gather, the fences were more secured. Funny thing is we all said Obama, Tear Down That Wall. What we need to do, is make it less appealing for those that cross illegally. No employment, No Medical, and No Housing or Federal Assistance! Just when we thought we were mad enough about the boarder, we got stopped before coming to Rio Rico less that 20 miles from the boarder. I took many photos of the vehicles, personnel, and other equipment. Really!!!! If you want to contain rats coming off a ship, do it at the dock! Once past the dock, it is an impossible task! This happened to us at the other boarder road, and just how many roads cross our boarders?? Our Tax Dollars at WORK?????? Unbelievable! Our next stop was Tumacacori National Monument! This is another joke in our history, and we have a monument for it. The Spanish conquerors, killed, pilfered, and forced the natives to convert to Christianity. Isn't that a little like the Muslims, if you don't convert, you die? This trip was suppose to be an adventure to discover America, and I am learning more the hard way. History, we are to learn from our mistakes, so we don't repeat them. Who are we? What are we? Who cares what others believe? Why should others care what we believe? Why can't this world live in harmony? Why can't we learn to agree to disagree? Will it ever change? Maybe total inhalation of this planet is the only way it will ever change. This is probably why it makes total sense to TEAR DOWN OUR WALLS! What Good Are They??? or Build a wall that can't be breached, electrify it, and have only two locations to enter!! Arizona is a beautiful state, however, I will never visit it again. Reason, on I19 every sign is in KM, I don't need that hassle in my life. What were they thinking? I am all for change, but that is ridiculous! I am good with miles, leave it alone, and get a life! Enough, I am retired, why do I even CARE????
