The Most Swedish City in Russia

In the northwest of Russia, on the shore of the Baltic Sea, is one of the most unusual cities in Russia - the city of Vyborg. This city was founded by the Swedes. For 730 years of its existence, this city from the Swedes became part of the Russian Empire, then Finland, then the Soviet Union, then Finland again, and then Russia again. Being a part of each of these countries was reflected in the architecture of Vyborg. We walked through the streets and parks of the city and tried to find surviving evidences of the city's past life.

Russia,The closest Russian city

A day in Razdolna, Alaska (Homer area town)

Overlooking a stunning bay, Razdolna is a small hamlet on Kenai Peninsula, home to about 30 Old Believers Orthodox families. An unincorporated community, it has no businesses at all except the local elementary school. Local residents are somewhat detached from the nearby larger town of Homer but are closer to the neighbor Old Believers town of Voznesenka.
Views in Razdolna are amazing, huge slope opens a beautiful vista to the Kachemak Bay, there's a plenty of wildlife, you can spot moose steps almost everywhere in town. I spent a few hours in this nice little village and took many pictures that wanted to share here.

Thank you for watching and enjoy!

Alaska: Part of America That Used to Be Russian | Orthodox Churches and Indigenous People

Alaska - the 49th and most Russian state of America. Russians sold it to the USA as an exhausted territory in the 19th century. Later, when oil and gold reserves were discovered here, Russian migrants started coming back. I traveled to Alaska to visit Old Believers communities and meet with indigenous people who practice Orthodox Christianity and look for their relatives in Chukotka. Let's see how Alaska has changed since the sale and how locals feel about the Russian heritage.

Novosibirsk, Russia - Property Pinpoint Vlog Ep 9

I do not work in Russia but I have family here and I want show you a bit of what Novosibirsk, the 3rd largest city in Russia is like.

Once crusty and impersonal, Novosibirsk is now the capital of Siberia and has opened its doors to the world. With a slew of interesting museums and monuments, a relaxed big-city vibe, and a wealth of great accommodation at both the high and low ends make Novosibirsk a worthwhile Trans-Siberian pitstop.

The city grew up in the 1890s around the Ob River bridge built for the Trans-Siberian Railway, and the city is festooned with original examples of the wood-lace architecture that prevailed at the time before the Soviets took over and started chucking concrete everywhere. Named Novo-Nikolaevsk until 1925 for the last tsar, it grew rapidly into Russia's third largest city and a key industrial and transport centre exploiting coalfields to the east and mineral deposits in the Urals.

The Amur River by Colin Thubron

The former recipient of the Edward Stanford Award for Outstanding Contribution to Travel Writing, Colin Thubron introduces his new book 'The Amur River'.

In his 80th year, Colin Thubron made a dramatic and ambitious journey along the 3000-mile river that divides China and Russia.

The Amur River is almost unknown. Yet it is the tenth longest river in the world, rising in the Mongolian mountains and flowing through Siberia to the Pacific. For 1,100 miles it forms the tense border between Russia and China. Haunted by the memory of land-grabs and unequal treaties, this is the most densely fortified frontier on earth.

'The Amur River' charts Thubron’s journey from the river’s secret source to its giant mouth, covering almost 3,000 miles. Harassed by injury and by arrest from the local police, he makes his way along both the Russian and Chinese shores, starting out by Mongolian horse, then hitchhiking, sailing on poacher's sloops or travelling the Trans-Siberian Express. Having revived his Russian and Mandarin, he talks to everyone he meets, from Chinese traders to Russian fishermen, from monks to indigenous peoples. By the time he reaches the river's desolate end, where Russia's nineteenth-century imperial dream petered out, a whole, pivotal world has come alive.

Offering a unique perspective of two of the world’s superpowers via the story of the Amur, 'The Amur River' is a shining masterpiece by the acknowledged laureate of travel writing, an urgent lesson in history and the culmination of an astonishing career.

Published by Chatto & Windus, Vintage available at Stanfords for £20:

Stanfords is delighted to welcome Colin Thubron to The Conduit in conversation with fellow Peter Frankopan on Thursday 30th September 2021.

Don't Make This MISTAKE When Booking Your Alaska Land And Sea Cruisetour! #shorts

A lot of people ask whether they should do a land tour before or after their Alaska cruise. I have my preference, but you may have your own.

Generally ports and glaciers are the draw of an Alaska cruise. The wildlife and scenery is stunning and generally people want to explore the port towns off the ship as much as possible. This calls for long, active days in port.

The land tours are jam-packed with activities and early mornings. You have early morning meeting time for excursions, transfers to train rides, and possibly a 6am start to a Denali guided bus sightseeing tour one day.

I prefer to get up early at the beginning of the trip and then have an opportunity to relax a bit more on the ship with glacier viewing days.

If you would like some help planning a trip, you know how to reach me! I’m happy to help, especially after spending 5 weeks in Alaska in 2022.
