Saltcoats 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This popular Ayrshire holiday resort is found on the coast and boasts a variety of things to see and do.

In the 1500s, King James V dipped into his own pocket to establish the salt panning industry in Saltcoats, from which the town takes its name.
The small harbour dates from the late 17th century with later alterations, and at low tide fossilised trees can be seen on the harbour floor. It was in Saltcoats in 1793 that Betsy Miller, the only woman ever to have become a registered ship's captain, was born.
Saltcoats today is much better known for its picturesque harbour and golden, sandy beaches set around Irvine Bay. Visitors interested in the history of the area will find a comprehensive overview at the North Ayrshire Museum which is housed in a former church.
Popular attractions in Saltcoats include the Apollo Cinema, Basebowl Ten Pin Bowling and the Saltcoats Town Trail where you can learn about the town’s fascinating heritage.
Saltcoats is also home to variety shops to browse and cafés, bars, restaurants to dine in.

Places to see in ( Penicuik - UK )

Places to see in ( Penicuik - UK )

Penicuik is a town and former burgh in Midlothian, Scotland, lying on the west bank of the River North Esk. It lies on the A701 midway between Edinburgh and Peebles, east of the Pentland Hills. The town was developed as a planned village in 1770 by Sir James Clerk of Penicuik. It became a burgh in 1867. The town was well known for its paper mills, the last of which closed in 2004. More recently the town was home to the Edinburgh Crystal works. Penicuik has two secondary schools, Penicuik High School and Beeslack Community High School. Crystal FM is the Community Radio Station serving Penicuik & S W Midlothian on 107.4

The town's name is pronounced 'Pennycook' and is derived from Pen Y Cog, meaning Hill of the Cuckoo in the Old Brythonic language (also known as Ancient British and the forerunner of modern Welsh). Penicuik is Scotland's 50th largest town and the biggest settlement in Midlothian.

Near Penicuik is Glencorse Parish Kirk, which formed part of the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped (1886). Some of the streets nearby are named after characters in the novel and its sequel, Catriona (1893). Penicuik is home to the Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, garrisoned in Glencorse Barracks. Penicuik is twinned with the town of L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue in France. The site of Penicuik was home to the paper mill established by Agnes Campbell in 1709. A monument in the churchyard reads 1737, Annabel Millar spouse to Thomas Rutherford Papermaker at Pennycuik.

Around 1770, the arrival of the Cowan family, and their expansion of the paper mill, led to the need for homes for their workers. The hamlet of Penicuik was expanded as a planned town (roughly based on Edinburgh's New Town) by Sir James Clerk of Penicuik, the builder of nearby Penicuik House, and by 1800 the population had risen to 1,700.

Penicuik was the site of a prison camp for French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars (housed in the old range at Valleyfield Mill). The former camp is now the site of a housing development in Valleyfield. A monument dated 1830 by the River Esk commemorates the mortal remains of 309 prisoners of war who died 1811-14. It was erected by Alexander Cowan owner of the paper mill, whose house overlooked the burial site.

Penicuik hosted the inaugural Grand Match in curling, between the north and the south of Scotland, in 1847. This took place on the high pond on the estate of Penicuik House, not the low pond which is still used for curling on rare occasions. The town became a burgh in 1867. In the oldest part of Penicuik, surrounding the town centre and to the south of the former POW camp, crossing the river Esk is Pomathorn Bridge which was once a toll bridge and the main route between Edinburgh to the north and the Scottish Borders to the south. As such Penicuik has a number of ancient traveller's inns, including The Crown, and the Royal. Because of their location on such a busy caravan route, both these public houses advertise the patronage of many characters from Scottish 18th Century history, including alleged visits from Burke and Hare and Bonnie Prince Charlie.

( Penicuik - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Penicuik . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Penicuik - UK

10 Worst Town to Live in Scotland

What are the worst towns to live in Scotland? Those living in Scotland may find it easier to identify with the places we’ll be discussing here as the worst towns in Scotland. For others living in the UK, however, some help might be needed to identify and associate with the condition of those towns. Thus, we shall try to be as fair as possible in describing these worst towns to live in Scotland. If the patriotic fervor is successfully prevented from blurring anyone’s vision, the residents in those towns will readily agree with anyone listing their homes are among the worst places in the UK because they know that as eyewitnesses. You’re encouraged to be objective about those towns described in this video.
10. Elgin
The town of Elgin in the heart of Moray is going to be our starting point. It is a town and formerly a Royal Burgh there. As the administrative and commercial center for the county, Elgin is one of the 10 worst towns in Scotland.
Elgin is on this list because of what those that had been there observed. One of them decried the unimaginable bleakness that absorbs the place regarded as one of the depressing towns in Scotland. Its cathedral is in ruins. there are no quality and decent bars and restaurants in the town. A reviewer advised that you can only get a semblance of that at Aberlour where you can, at least, drink something bearing some semblance to a decent whisky.
9. East Kilbride
The next of the 10 worst towns to live in Scotland is East Kilbride, the largest town in South Lanarkshire. The town lies on a raised plateau in an area to the south of the Cathkin Braes which is about 8 miles southeast of Glasgow. It is also close to the boundary with East Renfrewshire.
We have to admit that it’s not everyone in East Kilbride that’ll agree that their town is one of the worst towns to live in. Either due to complacency or modesty, they seem to have everything they need and their chances of living in the town are close to nil. However, the aggression and intolerance of criticism are the banes of this town. If you can consider that an adventure, you’ll be content with seeing East Kilbride where drunken thugs after 9 pm bumble through a web of roads as they try to locate their home.
8. Falkirk
Falkirk, a large town in the Central Lowlands of the country, is also one of the worst towns to live in Scotland. The town that was historically within the county of Stirlingshire lies in the Forth Valley. It’s about 23 miles northwest of Edinburgh and 20 miles northeast of Glasgow.
In Scotland, Falkirk is considered the ned capital. You should avoid any derogatory comment here; only those living in Scotland will appreciate the fact that this 21st most populous settlement in Scotland lacks civility. Visitors say they’re pissed off by the heap and tacky bling being brandished in the city. If you care about decorum and civility, you will agree with those who labeled this town one of the worst in Scotland. Their dressing is out of this world and the parents seem to have conceded the control of the kids to themselves as they display their indecent idiosyncrasies.
7. Coatbridge
The next one of the worst towns in Scotland is Coatbridge, a town in North Lanarkshire which is about 8 miles east of Glasgow city center. The town set in the central Lowlands, with neighboring Airdrie, is a part of the Greater Glasgow urban area. The earliest known settlers in the area came around the Stone Age era while the actual founding of the town is traceable back to the 12th century.
Here’s a town where one of the local junkies could just accost you and utter or mutter some undecipherable words when they just want a smack. Every evening can be nightmarish in Coatbridge with their special version of English they speak as they swagger and grunt at each other. You’re likely to feel like the odd one out on social gatherings when you see everyone with a bottle of cider or something stronger, firmly gripped in one hand and a cigarette in the other.

Take a flight to Scotland for any number of reasons. The nation is home to thousands of enchanted locations, including national parks, world-class cities, and historic small towns.
A trip to the lush Scottish Highlands is worthwhile if you want to experience the breathtaking scenery of rural Scotland. This mountainous region, which is found in the northwest of the nation, is home to a bewildering assortment of mythical castles and legendary locations like Loch Ness.
Urban explorers will enjoy exploring culturally rich cities like Edinburgh, which is well known for housing one of Scotland's most prized castles, world-class museums, and an Old Town that was listed by UNESCO.
Additionally, there are quaint and mysterious cities with a lot to offer, like Inverness and Fort William, despite their size.

1. Edinburgh
It's not difficult to see why Edinburgh is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful cities in the world; there is a long list of well-liked attractions to check out, as well as a rich history with a medieval Old Town and a New Town awash in Georgian grace. The magnificent Holyrood Palace and Edinburgh Castle frame the renowned Royal Mile in this magnificent capital city, which is encircled by seven hills. On top of an extinct volcano, the 11th-century castle is a well-known Scottish landmark. From regal ceremonies, sumptuous feasts, and the birth of a king to bloody battles, ruthless politics, and queens' demises, it has seen it all. A visit is a must if you're in the city. Check out Mons Meg, a medieval siege gun, the Stone of Destiny, and the One O'Clock Gun, as well as the rooms of the castle, and be mesmerized by the dazzling crown jewels. Even without the views, visiting the castle is worthwhile.
Other highlights in Edinburgh include visiting the National Museum of Scotland, the Royal Botanic Garden, and ascending Calton Hill, especially if you're a fan of author Robert Louis Stevenson, who referred to it as his favorite place.

2.Isle of Skye
The largest of the Inner Hebrides, Isle of Skye is a truly captivating Scotland destination with a ton of things to do. Its breathtaking terrain is .ted with towering emerald-green mountains, dramatic sea cliffs that descend to seashell-covered beaches, unusual rock formations, and waterfalls almost everywhere you turn. Some of these waterfalls plunge into the Atlantic's turquoise waters. Explore the island by strolling around the Quirang and even hiking to the summit, which can be reached by following the straightforward, well-maintained path. After that, take a cool dip in the crystal-clear waters of the Glen Brittle Fairy Pools and visit the Talisker Distillery for a tour and whiskey tasting.

3. Loch Ness, Inverness
There are many visitors who go to Scotland's most well-known loch in an effort to see the fabled Loch Ness monster, but that isn't the only reason you should go. Visit the ruins of Urquhart Castle, once one of the largest castles in the nation, and hike around the lakeshore while taking a Loch Ness excursion from Inverness while keeping an eye out for the fabled monster. Even though the medieval fortress is now only a collection of ruins, it's still enjoyable to explore and take in the lake views. Climb Grant Tower, which overlooks the famous loch, and imagine the magnificent banquets that were once held there as you look into a depressing cell where the fabled Gaelic bard Domhnall Donn is said to have once resided. Discover the stories behind the nation's most enigmatic sea creatures at the Loch Ness Centre and Exhibition.

4. Cairngorms National Park
Cairngorms National Park, one of Scotland's two national parks, is located in the northeastern part of the country. One of the best things to do in the Scottish Highlands is to visit the park, which contains four out of the ten highest peaks in Britain and five out of Scotland's highest peaks. Along with being a haven for Scotland's wildlife, it also has some of the most stunning lochs, rivers, native forests, farmland, and moorland. Among the animals you might see are reindeer, wildcats, pine martens, golden eagles, deer, and badgers. In addition, the area has countless miles of trails that let visitors explore the surroundings. Regular visitors advise taking a stroll around Loch Muick and viewing the area from the peak of the nearly 4,300-foot Ben Macdui.

SCOTLAND TRAVEL GUIDE.
Contrary to popular belief, Scotland is not just the land of Braveheart, haggis, and whisky. It’s a rugged country filled with towering castles, stunning lochs and mountains, beautiful parks, and incredible history.

Partially conquered by the Romans, Scotland is a land with a turbulent past. It was invaded countless times by the English during the Middle Ages before the Treaty of Union in 1707 united the continent (an unpopular move at the time). Since then, it’s been a part of the United Kingdom (though there is a growing movement for independence).

While Scotland may be a small country (only 5.4 million people call it home), it’s had a huge impact on the direction of the world. Economist Adam Smith, inventor of the telephone Alexander Graham Bell, novelist Robert Louis Stevenson (he wrote Treasure Island), philosopher David Hume, ecologist John Muir — the list of famous Scots goes on.
I love visiting Scotland. The people, the jovial spirit, the landscape, the booze — Scotland never disappoints (ok, maybe a little with the food). It’s an incredible destination for road trips so make sure you get out of the cities and into the highlands with their rich jagged landscapes. And be sure to head west to the islands of Islay, Jura, and Mull.
This travel guide to Scotland can help you plan where to go, what to see, how to save money, and everything in between!
