Smolyan - Sekvoia Hotel via Booking.com approx €15. Warm, ski style chalet hotel. Minimal wifi, quiet, big views over the valley. Did the job. 6/10
Zlatograd - 1st night, again booking.com approx €15, very nice room excellent cable tv (with all football!) above a little shop. 9/10. 5 min walk from best restaurant we found in Bulgaria, up river 2 minutes, cross the bridge, next to Alexandrov House and the Ethnographic Area Complex.
2nd night - due to the 1st place being full, we took a €25 house on booking.com.

A tale of two halves here as we tackle our highest mountain pass right up into ski territory, then have a huge downhill albeit with one last mountain pass to Zlatograd. Watch for more detail! Some of the most stunning scenery on the trip so far, and definitely the toughest riding.

В 1934 село было названо в честь воеводы Момчила — Момчиловци, прежде оно называлось Горно-Дерекёй.

해발 800m의 산비탈에 자리 잡은 브레제 마을. 돌판을 얹은 지붕이 옛날 강원도의 너와집을 연상시킨다. 비탈길을 따라 마을 골목으로 들어서자 한 할머니가 우리를 반겨 주신다. “들어오세요, 들어와요.” 단출한 살림살이. 손님을 위해 할머니께서 양고기를 데운다. 그리고 장수촌에서 빠질 수 없는 요구르트 ‘키셀로 믈라꼬’도 듬뿍 내오신다. 믈라꼬는 산촌 사람들이 매일 만들어 먹는 음식. “먼저 양젖을 끓인 다음에 유산균 요구르트를 작은 수저로 아주 조금 넣고, 하루 동안 천으로 덮어 놓으면 되지.” 거친 빵과 시큼한 요구르트가 이곳의 주식. “이거 정말 시큼하네요.” 산골에서 소박한 인심을 맛본다. 한때 2,000명이나 살았다는 이 마을은 젊은이들이 대거 도시로 떠나 500명 정도로 인구가 줄었다. 이제 아이들도 귀해서 학교도 문을 닫았단다. 마을 어귀에 있는 부고판 니끄롤록. 장례식뿐 아니라 사후 40일째에도 부고를 한단다. “사람이 죽으면 다음 날 무덤에 묻기 전에 여기에 부고를 하는 거예요. 이 벽보를 ‘니끄롤록’이라고 합니다. 이분이 가장 오래 사셨어요.” 최근 돌아가신 분 중 연세가 많으신 분이 90세와 88세. 100살 넘는 노인이 많다는 장수촌은 이미 옛말이 되었다. 여전히 농사를 지으며 소박하게 살아가는 주민들에게 행복에 대해서 물었다. “이 마을에 사는 게 행복한가요?” “그렇죠. 아주 행복해요.” “왜요?” “왜냐하면 여긴 아주 평온해요. 범죄도 없고 집에 문을 잠그지 않고 자도 상관없을 정도로 도둑도 없고요.” “여기서 쭉 살아오신 거죠?” “그럼요. 여기에 계속 살고 있고 아마 죽을 때까지 이곳에 살다가 이곳 무덤에 묻힐 거예요.” 사라져가는 장수촌 브레제 마을. 사람들은 변함없이 부지런하게 일하고 현실에 만족한다. 행복은 멀리 있는 파랑새를 쫓는 것이 아니라 자신의 삶을 있는 그대로 사랑하는 데서 시작되는 것이리라.

Разположен е в Родопите, по поречието на река Въча, на границата между Област Смолян, Област Пазарджик, Област Пловдив. Част е от каскадата „Доспат-Въча“. Ограничен е от най-високата язовирна стена в страната – 144,5 м. Той е най-големият язовир на реката и сред от най-големите в България изобщо.
